Time to begin reading The Government Gazette with renewed interest

From the current issue (d/d 28 March):

Government Notice No. 246
ASSIGNMENT TO MINISTERS OF RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE BUSINESS OF THE GOVERNMENT OF MALTA

In exercise of the powers conferred by article 82 of the Constitution of Malta, the President of Malta, acting in accordance with the advice of the Prime Minister, has approved that responsibility for the following business of Government be re-assigned as follows:

(a) Land Registry from the Office of the Prime Minister to the Ministry for Home Affairs and National Security (as part of National Identity Management);

(b) National Library and National Archives from the Ministry for Tourism to the Ministry for Education and Employment; and

(c) Oil exploration from the Ministry for Energy and the Conservation of Water to the Ministry for Transport and Infrastructure.

27th March 2013

Just two weeks into the game and they’re already shifting bits of responsibility around and reassigning parts of portfolios to different ministri.

So the Land Registry has gone from Joseph Muscat (who is responsible for planning) to Manuel Mallia.

The National Library and Archives have gone from Karmenu Vella (or rather, from his PS Jose Herrera tal-Kultura) to Evarist Bartolo.

And oil exploration has been taken from Konrad Mizzi (the energy minister) and given to Joe Mizzi (the transport minister), who has been bitching about it from day one – apologies, since 1996, when he was last a minister. Wasn’t one of his electoral campaign promises that Malta would strike oil if we elect him?

Since his election, little Joey has been playing a new game which is called ‘Shockinawful’.

  3. Sasha says:

What is also interesting is National Identity Management, what on earth is this about? I thought that in the international community National identity has negative connotations so much so that the terms are avoided like the plague.

    • Alexander Ball says:

No no no the islands get confused and think they’re the Balearics.

National Identity Management is like a part-time course at MCAST.

Malta, Gozo and the smaller islands take it in turn to be reminded who they are and where they belong.

Frankie the Fluffer told me in a dream.

    • Makjavel says:

The Nazis had an office in Auschwitz, it was National Identity based. Management came later.

      • rjc says:

Last time our National Identity was managed we had a law forbidding anyone or any organisation from using the words Malta and/or its derivations, and National and/or its derivations.

We ended with such banalities as “Middle Sea” this and that. Altam, Nexinal, In- Taghna, etc.

      Quote from The Malta Independent:

“The newly-elected candidate was being pushed to go for the leadership post, but speaking to this portal – which had broken the news a few days ago – said it would have been too presumptuous of her to aim that high”

      Is presumption contagious?

      One Franco is not enough?

Contesting for the post of deputy leader is not presumptuous and filling the shoes of the late President Guide Demarco and Dr Tonio Borg?

I really hope the PN councillors see some sense as otherwise we will be stuck with these fools running the country.

      • H.P. Baxxter says:

        Don’t be a snob, Baggio.

        (Mhux hekk suppost nghid?)

      • Baggio says:

It’s not about snobbery but about having the right leaders to get us out of this mess. With all due respect Claudette is not the right person to fill any leadership position.

Get a reality check and a dose of humility, Claudette, or the country may end truly down the drain.

  4. La Redoute says:

What exactly is on Joseph Muscat’s list of responsibilities? He doesn’t seem to have anything to do, other than swan around.

  5. Jozef says:

OK, what happens to Heritage Malta and the Superintendence?

  6. ciccio says:

Isn’t this effectively a cabinet reshuffle within the first 2 weeks?

Joseph is already afraid of a coup within his government. Will it be long before he takes national security under his wings?

I said it before. This is a ‘war cabinet.’

  7. Natalie says:

What happened to Konrad? Finding himself overworked already? His ministry is pitiful, especially if responsibilities are taken away from him too.

    • Jozef says:

He’s just been demoted. Remember the fuss when Austin Gatt’s super-ministry lost Enemalta?

And there they were, condescending on energy and conservation of water as an organic design.

Marco Cremona may be behind this. Can’t have a minister checking your engineering credentials with his c’rrects and fuzzy logic.
