A petition has just been started for Jason’s removal
There’s a petition up for Jason Micallef’s removal as chairman of Valletta 2018. The link is below.
Let’s be objective here. This isn’t because he’s a “Laburist tradizzjonali” or because he was Labour’s secretary-general or even because he was chief of Super One.
Those are the reasons why he got the job and not the reasons which make him incapable of doing this.
And that’s a separate issue, called cronyism.
The truly worrying matter, the reason he should never have got the job, is that he is completely unfit for purpose. Perhaps some people haven’t understood yet the magnitude of what he has been asked to do, and that includes the man who appointed him, Jose Herrera, a noted philistine.
Getting Valletta named European Capital of Culture was a hard-fought battle and a struggle that took years of planning and negotiation.
And now it’s going to be right royally screwed up because the arts crowd have voted in the philistines who have in turn appointed …Jason Micallef.

What about us, who do not have a FaceBook account? How about moving the petition to be accessible on the Internet generally.
[Daphne – It’s not on Facebook. Just click on the link.]
Aren’t two of the newly appointed members of the Housing Authority the brother of the ETC CEO and the brother of Stefan Buontempo respectively? Skond il-Ministru, l-aqwa li hemm tlett nisa !
Something is not quite right here as most appointments have the blessing of the Prime Minister with his beaming smile.
This time around Jose Herrera was possibly asked to carry the can – and what a can as the unelected Jason Micallef cannot by any stretch of imagination perform the task.
Has he been politely shafted?
Time will tell.
Although I am against Jason Micallef’s appointment, I will not sign this petition. The country is getting the government it deserves and my reaction is along the lines of “Hekk hu go fik!”. That is the only way Maltese seem to learn.
Another motorcycle parade on the Triton fountain, perhaps? Ah, such memories of the golden years of Labour.
Those who switched from PN to Labour should have the guts to admit they have totally screwed up. Either that or they should have their heads seen to. You have to be thick as two planks to think this is another grand idea.
i still think that dr.muscat is doing the right thing, giving his people a piece of the cake.the pn should have done the same, instead they gave us hard time.e.g 10 e-mails to the minister p.a. not even 1 answer.do you think it’s right.dont get me wrong,i’m one of them people that’s waiting for a transfer, any time, maybe next week.thanks keep it up.
You should also say who started it given the fact that he has been named a couple of times on this blog for his political beliefs, or rather that of his family.
[Daphne – I’m sorry, but you’ve lost me there. I have no idea who Robert Muscat is and I am not interested in knowing, either. Few people in Malta are as acutely aware as I am that the autonomy of young men and women should be respected. They are not extensions of their parents.]
I started the petition for a very simple reason. I am a PL supporter. I’m not a supporter who will accept whatever the party says.
I’m someone who desires only the best for our country.
I’m not going to speak about other appointments that have been made. Those people have done sterling work within the Labour Party. I hardly think they can be judged at a national level at the moment (they will be judged, of course).
As for Jason Micallef, I think history has shown us that he has never been of any help neither to the party or the country. If anything, as we say in Maltese ‘fixkilna’.
That’s why I started this out. That’s why I urge everyone who believes Jason Micallef is not fit, to sign the petition. Regardless of your political beliefs, this is something that will affect us at a national level.
Signed it with great pleasure.
Don’t you think that this might have been Joseph Muscat’s way of totally humiliating Jason Micallef?
Make an appointment that is so ridiculous and so outrageous that people see it as what it is and tens of thousands of people call for his removal, calling him all sorts of things in the process.
Then Joseph Muscat steps in and says he was unaware of this appointment, that it was a dreadful mistake that he had nothing to do with — and hey, he is the hero, and Jason Micallef has had his name dragged through the mud. Oh, and in the process he can make Herrera look bad too.
So, looks like he was in on it. Still doesn’t change the fact that this was probably his way of humiliating Jason Micallef…
I wouldn’t even dream of putting my name to this petition.
The PL government should be given just enough rope.
Why are the Labour Party and a lot of its supporters rallying behind Mario De Marco?
The same reason the Nationalists were delighted when Labour begged Sant to stay on as leader after he ‘resigned’ in 2003.
Where is Kenneth Zammit Tabona?
Doesn’t he have anything to say about Jason Micallef’s appointment or is he afraid that by doing so he will be putting his own iced bun at risk?
Done.
I guess it’s a great way to silence Jason Micallef, just like Anglu Farrugia was silenced by being made speaker of the house.
Just heard through the grape vine that a police officer stationed outside the prime minister’s home was playing with his gun and it accidentally went off.
He is not the right person to organise such an important event.
We need a competent individual to chair this committee, and someone who unites people. Micallef is a divisive politician. Neither is he competent on the subject.
When the Valletta mayor nominated Peter Andre’ as its foreign spokeperson, Kenneth Zammit Tabona was all over FB to express his disgust at the decision.
Now that such a massive task of V-18 has been assigned to an idiot, his silence (i.e. consent) is widely noted.
Someone should ask Kenneth Zammit Tabona about this appointment.
Not to mention the fact that David Felice, the architect who Micallef is replacing, was perfect for the position. What a shame.
Where is Franco Debono now, the stalwart fighter against the so-called oligarchy?
Perhaps he’s busy checking the meaning of cronyism?
Malta is full of such people: totally envious and waiting for the right moment to twist a dagger in, not having lifted a finger in preparation but pushing for front-in-line for the glory.
They said it’s going to be Malta for all.
They said they were going to consult with everyone on everything.
They said that every person matters for something after the election.
They spoke of unity, no colours.
They told me I could not agree with them, but I could work with them.
They lied.
You were warned.
I fully agree with you re Jason Micallef and have signed the petition.
As an artist who was quite ambivalent about the prospect of a Labour government, this is quite shocking. But don’t exaggerate – it was hardly a “hard-fought battle and a struggle that took years of planning and negotiation” when Valletta was the only candidate.
[Daphne – Of course Valletta was not the only candidate. Where did you get that idea? The process is competitive. I had written about it at the time for a magazine, after interviewing David Felice.]

Seen this afternoon coming out of side door at the Office of the Prime Minister: Raymond Pitre, from the Labour billboards.
Has he gone to collect his prize, I wonder?
Kenneth Zammit Tabona, take note – that is, if you’re still standing.
Daphne you are right in saying that getting Valletta named European Capital of Culture was a hard-fought battle …. but who do we have to thank for having passed all to MLP?
The same people who fought the battle to get Valletta named European Capital of Culture.
[Daphne – No, the people who voted Labour. Those who are over 18, as all electors are, can’t blame other people for their choices and actions. If I vote Labour, it’s because I want to vote Labour and it’s my choice. “They made me do it” is for five-year-olds. Anybody who votes Labour and blames the Nationalist Party for ‘making him’ do it should be ashamed even to admit to such childishness.]
Daphne, can’t agree on this.
True the electors make their own choice … it was PN’s responsibility to work at convincing the electorate back in 2008 when we won by a trickle, corrective action was required … PN obviously failed miserably in that regard … albeit scoring high education, tourism, health, economy, etc….
[Daphne – I’m sorry, but I don’t agree. We are all responsible for our own actions and choices. This country’s troubles begin, but don’t end, with the fact that it is considered normal for adults to think and behave like children. It is perfectly possible for anyone of normal, average intelligence to make a rational assessment of the options for government. If they don’t, it because they don’t want to, and not because they can’t. Equate this to the sharp, fat-and-ugly-but-rich businessman of a certain age who chooses to believe that the beautiful young woman who lives with him does so because she is madly in love. No number of graphic descriptions is going to convince him otherwise, because he has made a choice to ignore what his rational brain tells him.]
“U Mhux Xorta”
Joey insists that Jason will do a good job.
He certainly will.
By Jason’s and Joey’s standards.
He most certainly will from an acultural point of view.
What on earth is culture anyway?
Ask Kenneth.
David Felice will do the work and Jason Micallef gets paid, unless the former resigns and lets the latter face the music.
[Daphne – Wrong. A bit of insight into Micallef’s personality should let you know that he will insist on doing the work because he genuinely thinks he knows best and that there’s nothing to it. He will also shaft those who try to obstruct or contradict him, ignore all advice and be relentlessly humourless and bitchy.]
Daphne, you just dashed my best hopes. Naively, I was fooled into thinking that David Felice will still make a success of it despite having that clown at the helm.
But like you point out, they have no clue as to how useless they really are.
If David Felice suffers it through till the end (2018), we have to declare him a saint.
If David Felice demeans himself through to the end (2018), taking orders from this scum, we shall have to declare him a prime masochist.
“X’jaf Jason fuq Joseph Muscat?”
That was one of the unanswered questions continuously raised on Net News before the recent elections.
Why was it left unanswered?
Was it a matter of pure conjecture – or was there substance behind it?
Was it only Jason “li kien jaf” – or where (and, perhaps, still are) there others who do know what Jason knows?
I fully expect Kenneth Zammit Tabona to dedicate his next column in the Times of Malta to his agreement or otherwise with this appointment. Let’s see if he’s a real man of principle.
What does Kenneth Zammit Tabona has to say about Jason Micallef’s appointment?
Would he leave someone else take the limelight while he does the real work.
