The Nationalist Party released this statement about an hour ago
Għan-nom ta’ Carmelo Mifsud Bonnici – Kelliem Ewlieni tal-Affarijiet Barranin, u Marthese Portelli – Kelliema Ewlenija għall-Affarijiet Ewropej
Matul dawn l-aħħar ġranet issemma’ u qrajna f’diversi artikli dwar ħatriet diplomatiċi illi jidher illi se jsiru biex jiġu aġgevolati persuni illi ħadmu bi sħiħ biex jaraw lill-Partit Laburista fil-Gvern.
Il-Partit Nazzjonalista jemmen illi matul dawn is-snin il-Korp Diplomatiku Malti kien strumentali biex isem Malta rawwen iktar għarfien barra minn xtutna. Il-Partit Nazzjonalista jemmen illi l-Korp Diplomatiku għandu rwol importantissimu biex ir-relazzjonijiet bejn Malta u pajjiżi oħra ikomplu jissaħħu.
In vista ta’ dak illi qieghed jidher fil-ġurnali f’dawn l-aħħar ġranet, u li l-Gvern baqa ma ċahadtx, il-Partit Nazzjonalista jappella biex kull ħatra diplomatika li ssir fil-livell ta’ Ambaxxatur isir fuq l-abbilita’ u l-mertu li kapaċi tokkupa din il-pożizzjoni kif ukoll li tagħmel il-ġid lill-interessi ta’ pajjiżna b’mod partikolari dak fit-tkattir tar-relazzjonijiet kummerċjali, u mhux sempliċiment għax persuna kienet attiva waqt il-kampanja elettorali tal-Partit Laburista jew għax hadmet bi sħiħ biex il-Partit Laburista jkun fil-Gvern.
L-Oppożizzjoni kienet qed tistenna wara d-diskors kollu li sar matul l-kampanja elettorali li kull ħatra futura f’dawn l-pożizzjonijiet kienet ser tinġieb quddiem l-Kumitat Parlamentari għall-Affarijiet Barranin u Ewropej għall-iskrutinju u l-approvazzjoni tiegħu. Biss jidher li l-Gvern mar lura minn kelmtu u dan sejjer jiġi kompletament abbandunat.
Il-Partit Nazzjonalista jemmen illi dawn il-ħatriet m’għandhomx isiru unilateralment minn Kastilja, imma għandhom isiru a bażi ta’ proċess miftuħ u trasparenti fejn l-abbiltajiet tal-kandidati mressqa jiġu skrutinati fil-parlament, u mhux skont il-kriterju l-ġdid ta’ Malta Tagħna Lkoll.
Il-Partit Nazzjonalista jieħu l-opportunita’ biex juri l-apprezzament tiegħu u jirringrazzja lil dawk kollha, illi sa llum, b’tant dedikazzjoni servew fil-Korp Diplomatiku u wettqu ħidma kontinwa favur Malta.

Couldn’t agree more!
But the replacement of capable people with turnips is not exclusive to the diplomatic corp.
There are also cases where blue turnips are simply being replaced by the red variety.
Is that the future High Commissioner to the UK interviewing Joseph Muscat on Super One?
Guess that was why they had the One outside broadcasting unit wired to the third floor of Castille yesterday.
So while the journalists of the independent media are kept outside the front door – literally on the stair case, of the monumental building – surrounded by a metal cage and with two cannons menacingly pointed towards them, the Super One producers – who we are told have no agenda – are invited inside the PM’s cosy office for a relaxed propaganda interview between friends where the questions are prepared in advance, possibly with a scripted reply.
Meanwhile, when the PM is not in office, his wife takes over with soirees for the High Society.
Seems that we are in for five years of propaganda and enlightenment from Castille.
Actually, I am now a bit confused whether that’s Joseph Muscat or Alfred Sant speaking about il-hofra, il-hofra, il-hofra…
He is alleging abuse in the hospitals. Has he forgotten that he is now the prime minister, and if he is alleging any abuse he has a duty to investigate.
Otherwise, he should just shut up because he cannot allege what he is in a position to investigate.
Or maybe he has forgotten already that his salary is now paid out of public funds, not by the Super One news room for propaganda purposes?
I realise it is actually another session at the psychiatrist with Norman Hamilton.
Yes but Net can do the same with Simon in five years time.
It’s what the Maltese call ‘balance’.
Why should we be surprised?
We had a cesspit cleaner for speaker of the House of Representatives in the past.
So why not:
a union man/ general dogsbody for director at Freeport,
a gardener for chairman of v18,
a health assistant and a travel agent for ambassadors?
What a breath of fresh air.
Yes. And why not have an ex-trade unionist, with zero experience of the civil service as Principal Permanent Secretary, responsible for tens of thousands of civil service employees and for all the services provided by government departments.
Oqghod studja u hallas MA barra kif ghamilt jien…..
Itlaq minn Malta qabel ma jkun tard wisq.
Perhaps the statement could have been half the length and more incisive but that’s my personal view.
Agreed – and possibly issued without the need for any prompting: diplomats with qualifications and some 20-30 years’ experience at the foreign office are being sidelined and replaced by incompetent PL supporters.
Agree with you fully. The targeted audience is unintelligent enough to have voted Labour. Keep it short, simple and scathing. But keep them coming. Mintoff used to say, “sa kemm titghallmuhom bhas-Sliema u Qaddisa”.
What do you expect from bloody lawyers?
That statement, with its Italianate terms and clunky archaic style, looks like something written in a 1930s attorney’s office, not the headquarters of a political party. I despair. I truly do.

The question is, are there any Labour-supporting career diplomats who can fit the role of an ambassador? C
an somebody give a list of these people?
Because when I see Marisa Micallef, Ray tal-microphone and Norman Hamilton get appointed as ambassadors in three of the most strategic countries, I despair.
Personally I would be ‘happy’ to see labour supporters get appointed as ambassadors (it’s only natural) as long as they’re career diplomats.
[Daphne – You don’t have to be a Labour supporter to be an ambassador. There were Labour supporters serving as ambassadors under the Nationalist government. Joe Cole in Washington, now permanent secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is one of them. If you are fit for the job, you are fit for the job. That’s meritocracy.]
Indeed there are – and some will be appointed as new ambassadors and others staying on. But no non PL symphatisers on the list of appointees, it seems.
There have been a number of Labour supporters serving in a number of important positions in embassies and EU institutions over the last 25 years. And the bulk of them were competent people.
So it seems there are competent Labour-supporting career diplomats. So why the hell did they choose three Labour-supporting crackpots over competent Labour-supporting diplomats when they were considering filling three ambassadorial posts in three of the most strategic countries?
Meritokrazija? What a joke. It was all a planned PL campaign founded on excellent marketing and brainwashing people with repeating nice catchy statements of hope and dreams of the supposed all inclusive phrase of Malta Taghna lkoll.
We are no more living in a dream but this is reality and this will continue with nice covers, selected crafty news images and contents but lack substance. I call this deceit.
When PL were in opposition they had to nitpick and invent lies in order to criticize the Nationalist government, but they are making it so easy for PN to hound them with genuine criticism. Nothing new, insomma.
I would not accept any position from anybody if I know that I am not trained for the job.I do not want to make an ass of myself.
Yes, but look at Joseph. Nothing deterred him from shooting for (and succeeding) at becoming prime minister.
He cannot even learn on the job as evident from the number of U-turns on decisions taken by him in the first 100 days.
Some people don’t mind at all making an ass of themselves as long as the job they land pays well and are able to turn a private car into a revenue producing vehicle at public expense.
No wonder he is now willing to change the ‘Code of Ethics’ in order to enable ministers and PS’s earn more from private practices and turn the position they were elected for, into a part-time job.
Yes but then fools rush in where angels fear to tread
The PN’s Uffiċċju Informazzjoni needs an urgent crash course in down-to-earth Maltese, first of all to get rid of all that legalese, then to avoid constructing long-winded sentences that take up a whole paragraph (but then maybe this is yet another aspect of legal-speak, or simply a reflection of a pompous writer).
Such pompous expression of thought is also quite common in speeches among many PN politicians.
And from the above statement, it also seems that proof-reading is a luxury down at Dar Ċentrali.
Well damme, I’ll do the PN’s job for them if they can’t do it:
