Joseph Muscat on Bondi+, when Lou asked him how he will feel when he meets the president of the European Commission at the EU Council next week, having just given a top government job to the very man (Dalli) who the European Commission president sacked:

(with a glaring, angry expression)
Dan il-pajjiz huwa mmexxi mill-gvern tieghu stess, u mhux mill-EU.

Excuse me? We are PART of the EU, not RUN BY the EU.

You don’t have to make it so damned obvious, Mr Prime Minister, that we are in the EU against your will and your best efforts, and that your attitude to our membership is not ‘this is the best thing for Malta’ but ‘majtezwel issa la qedin hemm’.

  1. canon says:

This kind of statement by Joseph Muscat and the EU should be brought to the attention of European Commission President.

  2. matt says:

We have five years of snide answers. After 10 years in the EU, and recipients of 2. 3billion euros from the EU, Muscat hasn’t changed his opinion on the EU. He was, is and will be anti-EU.

    • Catsrbest says:

Muscat and all his likes will always be anti-EU. In their heart of hearts they are not democratic at all, but as Dr Gonzi aptly called him some time ago he feels and acts like an emperor, or as I will put it, a dictator. Like his idol – Mintoff, he is nothing but, from all aspects, a mini dictator.

    • Mandy Mallia says:

Well said, Matt. My thoughts – and worries – exactly.

    • Calculator says:

Of course he is. It is in his Mintoff-loving anti-democratic nature. The EU, not being tied to elections, gives long-term policy across member states, while national governments only care for the next few years until their legislature is over.

Muscat’s Labour is the best example of this, caring only for the most immediate need to satisfy extremely short-sighted electoral promises and giving out iced buns. Its priorities don’t go beyond Malta’s shores, despite the reality that nowadays people need to have a more global outlook to survive and be more complete.

This would, of course, be in Muscat’s best interest, as he can only dominate locally when there is what he terms ‘no foreign interference’; in reality it is a regional community taking care of locals’ rights when theri own short-sighted govrenment does not. That’s what international norms and regulations are for.

So of course he hates the EU. The EU goes against everything (terrible) he stands for.

    • Carthago delenda est! says:

He will say anything just to prove his point. Not even Berlusconi went this far while he was prime minister (now it’s slightly different).

Don’t tell me you prefer this one to Gonzi, divorce issue and all else irrespective.

  3. H.P. Baxxter says:

Oh Christ they’re going to pull us out. I can feel it.

  4. matt says:

I’ve been commenting on the pull out ever since.

  5. matt says:

Muscat became their leader. Daphne I encourage you to write your column next Sunday on the MLP strategy to pull Malta out of the EU.

    • Kevin says:

      Good point.

The strategy might be similar to the one that ousted the Nationalists from government – tiny daily doses of snide remarks.

However, given Muscat’s ambition, I very much doubt that this will happen before 2017. His goal is to hold out until he can be called “Mr President.”

      • H.P. Baxxter says:

No. Muscat is the sort who would rather have the admiration of Maltese idiots than the respect of a foreign professionals. Hence his Renzo Piano story, and hence his de hack incident.

If he withdraws Malta’s EU membership, he’d be worshipped by 60% of the Maltese. So beware.

  6. Printer says:

can I have your private email address please?

  7. David says:

The Dalli case has shamed OLAF and the European Commission president.

  8. ciccio says:

John Dalli will be politically used and abused by the Labour government and will then be thrown away like any other sanitary disposable, so to speak.

Labour seems to be preparing for another fight with the medical and nursing professions, very much like in the 1970s, although this time they do not intend to appear to be directly involved.

Joseph Muscat is paving the way with language like “the health sector is like Babylon” and other comments he made on TVAM last week.

They seem to be planning changes in the work practices of the hospital personnel. John Dalli himself reminded The Malta Independent this week that when he left the Health Ministry in 2009 the hospital ran on a part time basis.

It is clear that the Labour government would not want to confront the professions directly again, so they will be using the services of Dalli instead. Joseph Muscat knows very well how to hide behind a smokescreen.

  9. ciccio says:

In 1996, Dr. Sant put Malta’s application to join the EU in deep freeze.

Now Dr. Muscat intends to start a cold war with the EU.

  10. Ketchup says:

Why wasn’t Bondi smart enough to point out to Muscat that Franco Mercieca could help that unfortunate woman whose son needed his expertize as Mercieca could operate for FREE, as per his waiver, on Sundays thus solving her problem and also of all the others Muscat claimed had to go abroad?

I do not want to sound insensitive but Muscat tried to play on our feelings here to score brownie points with a sob story.

    • Mediocrity rules says:

What’s new. Remember the Marsaxlokk cancer story during the election?

      • Alexander Ball says:

But when it came to the crunch he sent his wife to the hospital pre-election visit with the cancer doctor. Does Muscat have difficulty lying to men of integrity who can’t be bought?

  11. Aunt Hetty says:

Too bad – but not unexpected – that Mr Bondi tonight decided to treat the PM with kid gloves.

  12. Aunt Hetty says:

I wonder for how many months or years has the PM been planning to find the right time when to make Mr Bondi an offer he could not refuse.

Any guesses on which prominent member of the opposing media is next on the PM’s list for neutering in a similar manner?

  13. Jessy James says:

No one is thinking of pulling Malta out of the EU, no matter how much against.

There is too much that will be lost in way of funds, economy, public image and above all votes. So forget it.

They will not even use the threat of veto, as was once suggested, because everyone’s aim now is a stronger united EU.

What is going to be changed is the EU itself and in this case its leader for a left-leaning one. This case is just one of the weapons being used for the cause together with the extra special friendship suddenly appearing between leftwing leaders.

  14. Mandy Mallia says:

That statement by Muscat is very telling. I believe it won’t be long before Labour try to openly pull us out of the EU.

There have been so many pointers and they are impossible to ignore. And let us not forget the Joseph Muscat himself campaigned heavily against Malta joining the EU in the first place.

  15. Alexander Ball says:

This Dalli business has pissed me right off.

John Dalli welcomed in Malta where the standards are set so low even a piece of lying shit like Dalli can succeed.

Inspector Gafa did a fine job setting out the case for Dalli’s arraignment. How much more corrupt can you be than changing the Police Commissioner, doing a u-turn on Dalli’s court case and shunting the top detective sideways?

Is the Labour Party so short of adequate brains that they have to promote a lying sack of shit ahead of them?

John Dalli is shown up to be a liar in an institution where they set standards and rules that are as basic as they go yet he is considered top notch by Muscat. Muscat is a c*nt.

No mention in the press about Dalli’s miraculous recovery which proves he wasn’t really ill in the first place.

A piece of human garbage being paraded as the answer to our Health problems.

A comment left on The Malta Independent sums it up about Dalli being a liar. “On 5th July last year, OLAF investigators interviewed Silvio Zammit at his restaurant in Sliema, as a ‘person concerned’, or what we might call a ‘suspect’. The next day, 6th July, John Dalli telephoned Zammit and they spoke for 15 minutes – a quarter of an hour. John Dalli and Silvio Zammit are asking us to believe that at no time during this chat did they talk about the OLAF interview that Silvio Zammit had undergone the day before. Do you believe them? Well Kessler and Barroso didn’t and that, among other reasons, is why they asked Dalli to resign.”

Any civilized place would shun Dalli. My friends in UK can’t believe he is back in government in Malta. “Are the Maltese that stupid or desperate?” they ask. How the f*ck do you try to explain?

  16. Edward says:

My guess has always been that he will use any excuse to get us out of the EU seeing as the PL has always been isolationist and anti anything not Maltese. Very island mentality.

  17. maria debono says:

Plus ça change, plus c’est la meme chose, deliver us Oh Lord.

  18. Artemis says:

Muscat is slowly laying his cards on the table. It is now becoming obvious that he is using Dalli to get back at Brussels.

It is well known that he did not want to join the EU. However, do not despair. He would have to have a referendum to leave, it won’t be that easy for him.

As for Dalli, it is obvious he is guilty of many things. Muscat will not have him investigated for anything because he is fearful of what will be uncovered about his puppet, There is enough evidence online that Dalli is corrupt.

Muscat made a deal with him but we have all made our minds up as to the truth.

  19. Gahan says:

Dan Dalli mhux iced bun ha imma wellielu il-hanut tal-helu.

  20. lucienne says:

Ma nistax nifhem kif bniedem ghal snien twal igieled ghal value life kien jemmen fihom immur kontra kollox li kien jemmen fih ghal gwadan personali ghal ambizjoni ma nistax nifhem.

  21. Jonathan says:

In the two minutes that Muscat took to answer the question, he mentioned about 10 times that the Police Commissioner independently concluded that there was no case for Dalli to answer. The fact that Muscat had to stress ‘independently’ so many times in such a short time, leads one to conclude the opposite is the truth.

    • carlos says:

Is the ex police Commissioners John Rizzo of the same opinion about John Dalli as his successor?

The fact that John Dalli was miraculously healed just after the result of the election and returned to Malta right away shows that some understanding was reached between him and Joseph Muscat not to continue with the investigation.

Hence the transfer of the two officials in charge of his case. Commissioner Rizzo and inspector Gafa. The facts speak for themselves.

[Daphne – Asst Comm Michael Cassar was removed, too – so that makes the three investigators, all removed.]

  22. TROY says:

    JOHN DALLI:

This man was sent from heaven to deliver us from corruption, greed and the lust for money.

Thank you, Mr Prime Minister for rewarding such a saint.

Why, he even performs miracles. Christ turned water into wine, and John Dalli turned whisky into water.

    SANTO SUBITO.

  23. blue says:

Dalli’s appointment by Joseph Muscat was a clear message that was being sent out not to the Maltese but to the European institutions. It was a crystal clear message telling them to f..off, and not to interfere.

  24. Last Post says:

I must say that was a good question that Bondi put to him.

Caught between a rock and a hard place, Joseph’s answer is the only ‘decent’ one he could think of (which isn’t very decent anyway, considering its meaning and innuendos).

Returning to this business of getting back Dalli into local government, when he was given the sack from Brussels, I’m wondering who’s playing into the hands of whom.

  25. Riya says:

All that Labour, and especially Joseph Muscat, did for John Dalli is unbelievable and out of this world.

It is obvious that John Dalli had something to hide from the Police when he went abroad with an excuse that he was feeling unwell.

It is also a huge surprise that in Brussels there was no good medicine for his recovery. And the PL never commented on the case and his situation and action either.

However, with the result of the last election Dalli had a very speedy recovery and I am sure that the new Police Commissioner was a special medicine for him.

Both prime investigators were transferred and posted in better positions and also within the same branch. Shifting two prime, and high ranking fraud investigators from the Police does not make any good at the moment for the Police Force as it is public knowledge that the Police lack investigators in this very delicate Police squad.

But people will still ask the reason why this shifting has been done? Maybe to keep everybody involved in this particular case happy and with their mouth shut. But this action leaves also the genuine people in the dark of such a serious case which highly tarnished Malta’s reputation with the EU.

I wonder what John Dalli would have done if Labour did not win the election as I presume that he would have remained in Brussels for treatment for all his life time.
