What a miraculous recovery. Which holy saint is responsible?

Published: June 16, 2013 at 3:25am

Just over two months ago, John Dalli was too mentally unwell to travel and had psychiatric certificates (at least we hope they were not from a quack) saying that he could not “face psycho-social exposure”.

Now in his and Joseph Muscat’s eyes he is suddenly fit, strong and mentally well enough to do the job of Minister for Health and “reform” the country’s general hospital and its satellite clinics and organisations.

Who do these two men think they are fooling still?

psycho-social

Well, John Dalli is really the right man to do the job of reforming Mater Dei Hospital as he knows it inside out and I am not referring to his last months of being too mentally unwell.

I am referring to the days when it was being built and when Labour were accusing him for years that he was fiddling around and being corrupt.

Daphne, they are obviously fooling the majority of the population since there’s been no outcry whatsoever.

I was listening to Radio 101 during my daily commute a couple of days ago: impassioned phone-ins imploring the party leadership to take back Dalli because, after all, he caused no real harm to the party, mhux bhal Debono, Pullicino u Mugliett miskin.

I’d go as far as saying that Muscat’s main reason for slapping a puppet in the place of the previous police commissioner was precisely to be able to whitewash this whole Dalli scandal.

With the new police commissioner puppet’s verdict of “not enough evidence” (as if that means anything) Dalli became, overnight, a wronged virgin.

These kind of remarks make me see red. What do they expect that the PN grovels to the ex-PN or whatever one may call them to come back to the fold?

A resounding NO to people who acted in such a despicable manner towards their own party.

PN supporters should learn a lesson from the Labour supporters – they never complain on their radio and never say anything against their own.

PN are you there, are you listening?

Enough talk about what made us lose the elections, and taking back lost sheep. Also the talk about humility sucks and it does not work in the 21st century, unfortunately.

I am willing to contribute to the PN’s fund-raising campaign (I’m not even a member or anything of the sort) but I can’t stand the PN officials’ apologetic ‘confessions’ to the switchers by people who were part and parcel of the previous government. It just smacks too much of OPPORTUNISM.

Now that Dr Gonzi is completely out of the scene they fail to remind us also the achievements of the previous government – nationally and internationally. Of course mistakes have been made, but on balance the country continued to progress in face of the threats which caused other Eurozone countries to falter.

Not even the Labour party, after their 1987 and 1998 disasters in government, has been this apologetic. The major single reason for the PN’s defeat (to me) remains the fact that the electorate was weary (not fed up) of 25 years of (almost) uninterrupted PN government.

The general electorate is fickle (one of the ‘costs’ of democracy) and ‘the people’ wanted CHANGE. It’s a hard pill to swallow after the mammoth investments made in education and the general upgrading of the economy. But the writing was already on the wall since the 2008 election and the party failed to address the issue properly.

Meanwhile, Joseph Muscat, sensing the general atmosphere, played his marketing cards well, while at the same time hammering the usual negativity on Super1 and the pro-/labour media.

For all the boasting about ‘Rowdmepps’ and having all the plans for Malta’s problems, it’s emerging clearly they don’t even know what has hit them. 100 days on and they’re still moaning and finding excuses for their incompetence. Some argue it’s still too early and we have to give them a little more ‘chance’.

But from what we’ve seen so far it won’t be too long before the ‘electorate’ realises that change for its own sake is (often?) a sure way to regression.

Is another iced bun being prepared for Frank Zammit? One at a time, please.

“”Soon after the huge electoral loss in the first MEP elections, there was a reluctance to discuss the reasons behind this negative result. At that time I served on the PN national executive, and the analysis of the loss was put in a meeting with a very long agenda. It seemed as if no one really wanted to give it much thought” Frank Zammit says.

He described John Dalli as one of the politicians who modernised Malta, seeking political consensus from the opposition on important legislation. “He solved problems which no one could ever imagine solving”.

One has to be fair – John Dalli did some very good work as a Minister. Unfortunately he changed drastically when he did not manage to make it as PN leader and had to hit out in one way or another. He made a big mistake. He should have accepted defeat gracefully and got on with life within the PN . I was under the impression that he is an intelligent man but ………

Holy saints or not, I’m thanking heavens for your return! I was (stupidly) worried after reading a news heading on the front page of that rag newspaper “Illum” rapping Simon Busuttil for not condemning you outright for your ‘hdura’.

Who do these people think they are? The Inquisitor … or Archbishop Gonzi of the 60s (who they criticised and vilified for limiting their freedom of expression)?

It’s really unbelievable in this day and age that a journalist/columnist attacks and condemns a colleague with a different viewpoint and calls for her gagging.

[Daphne – Oh, Julia Farrugia, who’s in charge of Illum, is just all out to get at me because she thought she could get away forever with pretending not to be the daughter of Minister Karmenu Vella’s notorious Golden Years ‘driver’, Il-Boton/m, who was a running mate of all those thugs and implicated by the mysteriously deceased Ganni l-Pupa in the events on the night when Raymond Caruana was shot. She actually interviewed Karmenu Vella as though she’s just any journalist and he’s just any politician she happened to pick.]

Anyway, I’ve been calling here at least 2 or 3 times daily only to be faced by that magic number (54 (prisoners)). Instead, I started reading your past columns in The Malta Independent. Now I will just catch up with your ‘commentaries’.

    • Maria says:

Same here. I thought that we had lost an incredible journalist, the only journalist who investigates and come out with all the stories.

Daphne, please keep up your good work. I spent last week, checking in your web page daily, if not 2 or 3 times a day. Without your commentaries, our lives will be miserable.

    • Last Post says:

Yes Daphne, I was aware of that but still I was surprised that Malta Today didn’t even make the slightest reference to that piece of ‘Illum’ news item.

Your comment above makes it irrevocably clear that Illum’s editor (Julia Farrugia) has a personal axe to grind against you and her news items and reports have to be viewed from that perspective.

Check out this link. Fast forward to time 15:50. John Abela of Crowe Horwath (Malta) is an accountant, a Dalli canvasser, an advisor to Dalli (as Minister of Health). He had been tasked with costing the operational units within Mater Dei around 2009. As Commissioner, Dalli recommended John Abela to do a similar exercise for the Bulgaria health system, which he did.

Dan kollu xoghol lest li jista jintuza. Nisimghu aktar fil-granet li gejjin.

    • Gahan says:

Same mind set like Dalli’s – even the mannerisms are the same.

Dalli will put the health sector in place but he will leave a trail of disaster to the people working in that sector and to the clients receiving the ‘free’ service.

Saw him operating at Wrangler (Blue Bell) years ago. The bottom line was his focus not the workers. Wait and see.

      • maryanne says:

I heard that comment yesterday. The professionals and other staff will soon see the difference between Dalli and Cassar.

  16. I have no political allegiances to any party. I fight my own corner alone without any support from anyone.
However, any support would be appreciated. Visit my Facebook page to find out more. You will be surprised who my friends are yet they fail to comment.

I am also barred from placing any comments on Maltese online newspapers, including Malta Star. Just goes to show in what state FREEDOM OF SPEECH is in MALTA.

As for the police commissioner deciding not to prosecute in John Dalli’s case due to insufficient evidence, this does not mean there was no evidence.

When John Dalli falsely accused me there was no evidence from the outset. But the police still continued with the case against me. I was acquitted of all the charges that were brought against me.

As for appointing John Dalli in this current position, does this give him the authority to grant tenders to members of his family and close friends like John Abela of Crowe Horwarth (Malta)? Abela’s accounting practice is the same practice that audited the accounts at Daewoo. During these years the Daewoo agency was in the hands of J.M Scicluna and Joe Gaffarena but never managed to produce a set of audited accounts for the company. Despite this BOV provided millions of Euros in overdraft and loan facilities. It is also the same practice that was awarded the auditing tender for Mater Dei Hospital.

Many are those who forget that John Dalli was the person who, without authority and behind everyone’s back, sold the largest national asset (Mid Med Bank) while on a weekend trip to Jersey with two of his close friends. They definitely had no right to be present when disposing of such an important national asset that controlled more than 50% of the banking sector.

John Dalli is also the person who in the past stated “this, that everything is for free in the NHS has to stop. If a person receives a service it has to be paid for”.

It is difficult to predict, but maybe one day the Maltese Nation will wake up and find that they have to pay for their medical treatment. That Dalli’s close friends and family members have been awarded tenders and the Mater Dei Hospital was sold to a private enterprise for peanuts behind everyone’s back. http://4th-one.blogspot.co.uk/

So the previous Police Commissioner wanted to interview Dalli before taking further action. But now the present one finds no reason to indict him. It’s a whole set up especially with those medical certificates issued for two whole months before the election.

    Shame on Dalli.
