Bahamas landlord informed OLAF in November about Dalli visits in August and September

Bahamas landlord Barry Connor informed OLAF in late November, after the investigation against Dalli had been closed (Dalli was forced out on 16 October) about Dalli’s trips to the Bahamas in August and September and about their alleged purpose.

OLAF interpreted this as a civil dispute about unpaid rent, probably because so much detail was given to them about that. They seem to have skimmed past completely the strangeness of the visit and its alleged purpose, perhaps because its members are unaware that the Bahamas are not a summer vacation destination for Maltese people at all.

They dismissed the matter as being one in which they have no competence to intervene, because they saw it as being about unpaid rent.

When Dalli visited the Bahamas for a few hours in July, which is the very weekend OLAF appears to be interested in, Connor did not yet have a tenancy agreement. He said to me that he did not know about this visit. Dalli himself says he never left the plane. But that seems odd to me because I know for a fact that he flew out on a scheduled flight from London Heathrow to Nassau, and they expect you to leave the plane and at least go into the transit lounge in those situations.

One of the emails below is annotated in blue. Those are Connor’s responses to his OLAF interlocutor. You should left click on the images to open them up and read them easily.

This is more enthralling with every post, Daphne. Surely your best effort to date. There is surely NO WAY the Maltese press, and more importantly our politicians, can continue pussyfooting around this story.

How much longer can they collectively almost ignore the giant woolly mammoth that is now occupying their front room?

John Dalli went to Africa for charity reasons, then he ends up not paying one of them the rent due. sorry but the facts don’t match the words.

  10. curious says:

“The information appears to support the explanation given by Mr Dalli that he had travelled to the Bahamas tax haven in July 2012 to discuss a philanthropic project helping African people.”

    and

“The Seaview Beach villa on Paradise Island was rented by Mr Dalli’s daughter, Claire Gauci Borda, on behalf of a locally registered company, Tyre Limited, one of whose directors is British citizen Martin Zuch, founder and trustee of Give Hope International.” The Times, on line

Hasn’t The Times understood that Zuch came into the picture only in May 2013 and therefore it was not a question of a charity project?

Note also that Dalli is speaking about charity, now in June 2013, His first trip to the Bahamas was a year ago. Mr Connor stood by his version that during the summer of 2012 discussions were about business projects.
