Claire Gauci Borda took out a rental contract on that Bahamas villa FOR ONE YEAR, not for the summer

A member of my international worldwide network of spies (I don’t know why you all think it’s a joke, because it really isn’t) sent me one of the emails from Bahamas landlord Barry Connor to John Dalli’s daughter, Claire Gauci Borda, in which he chases her very civilly for the rent she failed to pay him.

I uploaded this in an earlier post. Apart from illustrating the fact that what John Dalli described as threatening was a straightforward request for money owed and not paid, this is the crucial point that many have missed, and which changes the scenario completely.

Claire Gauci Borda rented that Bahamas villa for one year, from July 2012 to this month. Technically, she is still the tenant, as the lease runs out in a few days.

Mrs Gauci Borda signed the rental contract for a year, but only paid two months’ rent and a security deposit. With that year’s rental contract in hand, however, she is able to apply for residence status, for tax purposes, in the Bahamas. If she signed the rental contract as the judicial representative of one of her or her father’s companies, then under Bahamanian law she is able to register that company there for tax purposes, at the rented villa address.

Now you see what I mean about this information changing the scenario completely. You can just about get away with the excuse that you rented a villa in the Bahamas for a couple of months to hold meetings while having an extended summer holiday.

But renting a villa in the Bahamas for a year? Not many explanations for that, except the obvious.

Now, too, we know why landlord Barry Connor has been speaking to the press, something a landlord would never do because it is a total breach of discretion. The Dallis got what they wanted and then didn’t pay him – flying the flag for Malta across the globe.

John Dalli might not have a bank account in the Bahamas. How about his daughter?

She can claim that she is a private citizen and that her affairs are private.

Next question: Does John Dalli hold power of attorney over any of his daughters’ business interests?

Mrs Caruana Galizia, I’m often repelled by your articles. But this one sure is worth reading. You should stick to THIS investigative style.

[Daphne – Thank you. That’s quite all right. I’m very often repelled by the people who read them.]

It seems that the Bahamas is going to give Muscat’s Global Residence Program a run for its money.

Tell me Daphne. Is l-Avukat prim u kumissarju Franco Debono really working as sunbed attendant or is this a joke because he was spotted underneath the shed?

[Daphne – He’s great mates with the owner.]

Does he spend his time inflating those ducks and whales?

His “Hu Go Fik” tactics can be useful for this purpose.

It’s because summer lasts for 12 months in the Bahamas – that’s her excuse.

Isn’t it amazing how some individuals who have more than enough money never seem to pay up?

If the contract wasn’t honoured, does any residency tax benefit hold?
