European Voice: ‘John Dalli caught in the Bermuda Triangle’

The Brussels-based newspaper European Voice has run an opinion piece titled ‘Dalli caught in the Bermuda Triangle’ It makes the essential point that many here have missed: that when Dalli left an EU meeting in Cyprus to cross the globe in secrecy so as to shift money in the Bahamas for a philanthropic project in Africa, he was an EU Commissioner.

And that’s perfectly normal behaviour for EU Commissioners, isn’t it.

Accompanying the piece, there’s a picture of Dalli. It’s captioned: ‘John Dalli – racking up air miles’.

Is nobody asking questions to Prime Minister, Joseph Muscat, about John Dalli. The Prime Minister owes the explanation to the Maltese nation and to the international press.

  2. Chris says:

I really wish someone, anyone, would ask John Dalli the following questions.

    1. If the trip to the Bahamas was pre-planned why go to Cyrpus in the first place?

    2. Why ask permission from the European Comission at the last moment?

    3. Why say it was for urgent business in Malta and conceal his ‘philanthropic work’ in the Bahamas?

    4. Why lengthen your journey to the Bahamas by first travelling to Malta, then Heathrow, then the Bahamas, instead of, as you did on the return leg travel Cyprus – Heathrow – Bahamas?

    5. Why, seeing that it seems he did his work on the plane (and assuming that he had no mobile phone facility on the plane, said business was conducted with fellow passengers) did they not agree to meet at a coffee shop in Heathrow?

    6. Why doesn’t he stop digging and get himself a good lawyer instead?

  3. mary says:

How bloody embarassing. I would dig a hole and stick myself in it.

  4. il-baks says:

Jista jkun kellu bzonn xi mili biex ikun jista jiehu ticket b’xejn?

Peress li hu huwa frequent traveller.

  5. GorgBorg says:

LOVE IT.. If only we can get his BA air miles statement.

  6. Johnny Geldof says:

John Dalli’s paranoia that the whole world is out to get him, might revive interest in the conspiracy theories and mysteries about the Bermuda Triangle.

The Bahamas are in the Bermuda Triangle, and I am convinced that he was abducted by aliens.

  7. La Redoute says:

Joseph Muscat now says he wants an explanation from Dalli (and then he’ll summon the press to say he’s satisfied with the facts).

If you want a personal explanation, call John Dalli on 7942 2964.

  8. Gakku says:

Of course Dalli should never have been involved in such a project as an EU commissioner. It is the first bloody point in the code of conduct for commissioners! http://ec.europa.eu/commission_2010-2014/pdf/code_conduct_en.pdf

An interesting point in all this is that Dalli keeps talking about a philanthropic project in Africa. Why not mention the specific country? Obviously he has a reason for not saying where.

  9. anthony says:

Lawrence Gonzi’s coup de maître, his political magnum opus, was nominating Dalli to the post of Commissioner.

In doing so he made sure he gave him more than enough rope.

    • H.P. Baxxter says:

And more than enough time to amass an even vaster fortune and shit upon his country’s reputation.

Stop attributing qualities to Gonzi which he does not have. He didn’t show political genius in the Dalli appointment, but his typical poor judgement.

  10. Felix says:

Now the Police say that “the investigation was never closed”, while the Police Commissioner has already pronounced that “there is no case against Dalli”.

We are really being managed by amateurs…or by whom?

    • Calculator says:

At this point it really is rather difficult, as the amateurs appear to be everywhere and at every level of governance.

  11. carlos says:

The Police Commission was too ready to comply with the Govt’s policy in declaring no case for John Dalli. After all that is why he was put there.

  12. Gahan says:

Yesterday I followed the news and Dalli said that the visit was a planned visit.

    http://www.timesofmalta.com/articles/view/20130704/local/Police-looking-into-Dalli-s-Bahamas-trip.476483

“Mr Dalli insisted to Malta Today yesterday that the trip to the Bahamas had been planned about three days before the phone call between him and Mr Zammit.”

Didn’t he ask Barroso to be excused because he had an urgent family visit to Malta?
