STORY OF THE DECADE: John Dalli has a hundred million in the Bahamas which he says belongs to friends
Last summer I was told that John Dalli had left an EU-related meeting in Cyprus to fly all the way to the Bahamas for a a day or two, and then flew right back.
Some people who were there thought it was weird (it was).
I was given some flight details, but they couldn’t be confirmed.
This was right in the thick of that chaos last July, when Dalli was all over the place, claiming that his email had been ‘hacked’ and that there was a conspiracy against him. Remember when he was filmed outside PN HQ making scenes?
That was before the ‘snus’ story broke.
I was also told that one of Dalli’s daughters had rented a house there in the Bahamas for the best part of the summer. Again, the information couldn’t be confirmed.
The rumours and the information persisted.
Now this morning the International Herald Tribune has run a major front page story: former EU Commissioner Dalli has a hundred million in the Bahama, which he is using and claims belongs to friends. He rented a house in the Bahamas and his family stayed there. The International Herald Tribune tracked down the man who rented the Dalli family that house, and who told the IHT how Dalli said to him that he was there to transfer large sums of money.
The IHT telephoned Dalli last Friday, who claimed that the money isn’t his, that he is handling it for somebody else, and that the project is “very personal”.

He claims the money is not his yet he is using it for a philanthropic purpose. Perhaps he partially funded the Moviment? Who knows…

So THAT’s how we’ll pay for all the stuff they’ve been promising – John Dalli’s back taxes and fines on what is clearly legitimate income, of course.
The actual behaviour of OLAF members in handling the Dalli case may not have been totally correct, but I think it’s becoming increasingly clear that kicking out Dalli was a justified move.

Or perhaps somehow Gonzi has connections everywhere, ranging from Barroso, to OLAF, to the American press, and now even to the Almightly.
Yesterday’s interview posted on Newsbook needs to be updated. The ‘kumplott’ ta’ Gonzi is much bigger than we thought, and is not restricted to the EU Commission.

I agree with you, Calculator. Olaf should have handled the matter in a more straightforward manner, but alas I think it was wary of bringing to the limelight a crisis of this nature so close to the end of the mandate of an otherwise quite successful Commission.
Olaf handed the ball over to Barroso who dismissed Dalli and we all know the rest of the story, particularly the transfer of Police Commissioner Rizzo to the CPD and the appointment of PP Zammit in his stead.

In Dalli’s case it is just the same as it was about that infamous, tyrant Mintoff, we have to refer to the foreign press to find out the truth. Ah, people in glass houses should better keep a very low profile, or better still disappear from the public scene.

Could this be a case of money-laundering?
The man seems to have an extremely serious obsession with money – an addiction, even.
He just cannot get enough of it.
Can I have the name of his friend, forsi ma tafx kif, he can let me use some of his millions too.
Mr Dalli’s case is like all the other cases.
The cases that we get a whiff of but are never solved. And again like any other politician – depends the side he is on and who is scraping the dust from under the carpet.
The problem is that the citizen pays, sometimes dearly, for the corruption of these people.
It is such a pity that we are so programmed to close our eyes and let all this go through.
You would think that all the big people with big brains were putting them to good use. Unfortunately we are too blue or too red to see all the colours in the rainbow.
