Lino Spiteri wrote yesterday that he does not believe Joseph Muscat will reach this level of inhumanity. And just a day later, he does.
Lino Spiteri, writing in Times of Malta yesterday:
The humane aspect first: it would be completely wrong to contemplate, let alone to execute, pushing back boat people to their place of origin.
It is time the EU saw the peripheral member states as fellow members deserving understanding and assistance with boat people
First of all, they are people in distress, entitled to solidarity from fellow humans. Secondly, they are desperate. They risk their lives on the cruel sea in the hope of finding acceptance and better circumstances in Europe. That is their destination, the mainland, not Malta or Lampedusa.
A cynic will say, so what? Whatever the humane logical reasoning, we end up hosting hundreds of them. Such reasoning is natural.
It is also wrong. The discussion should be about a humane way forward. That is why I do not agree with Joseph Muscat’s suggestion of pushing back in extremis.
Frankly, I do not believe he can mean it, both as a Christian and as a social democrat. I believe that he is taking a political stance to try to make the European Union budge from its rigid final decision.

Yes, a half-hearted defence and apology for the racist comments the PM.
Typical.
First, I hope Lino Spiteri learns to just let go at this point as the inhumanity of Muscat’s Labour is rearing its ugly head in full force.
Second, “Christian … social democrat”? Since when is Muscat either of those things? He is a socialist, period, in the odious vein as Mintoff, and his party is part of the PES, not EPP, at EU Parliament level. Who’s Spiteri trying to fool?
Actually, forget the PES-EPP part. Even the PES has a declaration of principles which is much more humane than Muscat.
Oh look, old school socialist on the rise.
I’m disgusted at Evarist, his supposed intellectual prowess nowhere to be heard.
Then there’s Zammit Marmara’, Mark Montebello, the young angry ones with their rainbow flags.
What a mess. Honestly, they’re unrecognisable.
So Lino Spiteri thinks the Prime Minister is just posturing and bluffing.
Who the f*ck is Lino Spiteri?
Your future head of state.
You’re so right – who the f…. is he. I remember him as the one on Mintoff’s government presenting (possibly also compiling) the budgets. The two which I vividly remember were (because they use to name them back then) – ‘The Rainbow budget’ which contrary to its name only created inclement weather and ‘The Jobs budget’ which as one may easily figure out only resulted in unemployment.
Someone who not only has a garden of Eden safe room double life in his own home but who has an interest in John Dalli.
Thinking….is our idiot PM in some way imagining that he’s engaged on some perverse, not to mention deadly game of brinkmanship with ‘Europe’?
Does he imagine ‘Europe’ to be tuned into our media, waiting to see what he does next, ready to admit defeat and take those migrants off our hands, to be distributed around the bloc?
Lino Spiteri is a socialist but definitely not a national socialist aka fascist nazi , the politics that produced concentration camps .
Oh really? Why did he help Mintoff build a national concentration camp, then?
Lino Spiteri is an idiot in the deepest Maltese sense, and I choose my words carefully. When asked why he ever joined Mintoff’s MLP, he always claims that as a socialist, there was nothing else that he could do.
He couldn’t very well join the PN.
He forgets that in life, there is a third option, a nobler option: staying out of politics if none of the parties fit in with your political beliefs.
What about our President? This is a humanitarian issue.
Oh please. Does it seem likely that these immigrants have the type of eating disorder that he’s ready to risk whatever’s left of a non-existant positive reputation for?
Another one who needs a pair.
Or a nation that needs a new President who’s worthy of the title.
Let us please all understand what is happening here. Joseph Muscat, with his rash decision, is flirting badly with the fascists, xenophobes and racist people who occupy all ranks of the Maltese society, but who have been hiding under the rocks for many years.
This is most dangerous and he should be advised – because I doubt he can reason so far, that once you unleash this monster, there is no holding it back.
I wouldn’t be surprised if a few racial attacks happen soon! Pity that Simon Busuttil thinks it is safer to sit on the fence, uttering a “tsk, tsk” every now and then.
Spiteri has taken to supporting losers lately.
First that joke of an ex-MP, and now this.
I thank Lino Spiteri for his stand. It is very important that people from the Labour camp check the prime minister for his mistakes.
