Unless this is diversionary tactic to deflect attention from more pressing misdeeds I believe he’s trying to do another Mintoff brinkmanship. Lino Spiteri almost spelled it out in his column on Times of Malta just a few days ago.

Muscat just lacks maturity to be a PM. He is not refined at all.
Dalli and Muscat truly give us a bad name in the world media. They have now become infamous. Muscat will have a hard time to befriend with any European leader let alone getting something done about illegal immigration.
Daphne, something which hasn’t been pointed out yet is that up to four days ago, the government was advising all Maltese not to travel to Libya because it’s too dangerous.
Regardless, Joseph Muscat had no qualms about sending a group of vulnerable people to this dangerous place.
This whole debacle will have parallels with the famous incident in the young Joseph’s life, where the Prefect of Discipline at St Aloysius attempted to send him home for not wearing an undervest.
That time, of course, the order to go back home was circumvented by the agent of a nearby friend’s mother who provided him with an undervest.
This time, Muscat has taken on the role of the Prefect of Discipline attempting to send migrants home and the European Court of Human Rights has taken on the role of the nearby friend’s mother by issuing, not an undervest, but an interim measure. Oh, what irony.
With all fairness – the article in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung in no way condemns Malta’s actions but shows understanding for Malta’s plight. The readers comments throughout reflect the same and now I understand why the other German press didn’t pick the story up: the sentiment here in Germany is the same and hence must not be talked about. We wouldn’t want to open Pandora’s box again…
Unfortunately, as wrong and misguided as Joseph Muscat and whoever thinks like him may be they’re bound to be gratified for all the political and media attention they’re getting.
Joseph Muscat obviously fancies himself as the reincarnation of Dom Mintoff. SCARY and DANGEROUS!
Joseph Muscat must be also pleased about the way this issue, IMPORTANT as it is, is distracting the public from other issues like the Dalligate, Manuel Mallia antics etc……
It seems that people can only concentrate on one disaster at a time. Shame.
Our Joey goofed it all up and unfortunately we have to bear the brunt of it all.
The sensible thing to have done and there is still time to do it, is set up a committee (after all setting up committee and boards is the norm lately) together with the Opposition.
Together they could prepare a report highlighting very clearly Malta’s problem regarding illegal immigration. One should state very clearly that Malta is willing to take its share of immigrants but expects its EU partners to take their share as a sign of solidarity towards other EU member states such as Malta.
An EU parliamentary session on the subject should also be held to discuss this matter.
Our MEPs should also make pressure for this to be held sooner than later. No more threats, no more stupid and immature decisions as those taken by the prime minister.
Let us show that we are indeed a nation that besides caring, we are also able to do our bit towards finding a solution to the problem whilst accepting the fact that immigration is here to stay.
People all over the world migrate even more so these past few years due to globalisation.
It is very obvious that Africans are not capable of running their own countries. These countries are very rich in resources, have vast land and yet they are ridden with disease, poverty and war.
I think the best way to solve the whole immigration problem is to fix the source of the problem.
These African counties should be colonized once again and run by European countries. During the colonial days there was no such thing as wars in these countries.
Sure there were injustices such as segregation but definitely not the injustices they face today like mutilation, torture etc.
Fact is they were better off then rather than now.
[Daphne – Oh do stop. You started off by saying you are not a racist and that ALL immigrants without papers bother you, and now look.]
The first paragraph under ‘Breves’ of the Affaires-strategiques.info should be read carefully. The last sentence says that although Italy and Malta have many times brought the attention of the other EU menbers that they require help with this situation, it appears that it has fallen on deaf ears. So we should keep on pressurising our other EU member states to understand our situation without at any time falling short of our international obligations.
Yet again. Well done Daphne for clearly explaining how and why government got it so very wrong on the migrants issue. Your article in today’s The Malta Independent is a must read.
I’m really enjoying these exciting times! I had forgotten how it used to feel every morning waiting for the early morning news to see how the Labour Party will continue fucking up this island.
But man, this guy was fast – a hundred and some odd days and we are international news! He is really effecient. Smell the coffee…….what a load of bullshit.
Mr. Dalli said he initiated a second legal case in a Belgian court last December for defamation against Swedish Match for spreading what he said is “the lie on which the whole investigation started.” A spokeswoman for Swedish Match, Rupini Bergström said the firm has “not been formally notified that we are the subject of any such lawsuit.”
To put things into pespective, i just hear Tonio Fenech say that there were instances in the past where over 3000 persons landed on Maltese shores. With just a few hundreds the PM is already panicking – that doesn’t say much about his resilience in the face of hardship.
The German headline is the best – “Malta threatens to send refugees back to Libya” – the whole issue in a nutshell. You have to love their precision.
Indeed. My favourites. If only we had some, no make that an iota of their DNA.
“The international media woke up and smelled the coffee.”
Yeah. The Mintoff-era Comforto.
The boy wonder’s fuck-ups are now worldwide.
He grew up wanting fame? How about infamous?
Wait for the 2nd Republic.
One wonders if the kid was actually rattling the bars in his cot, rather than the metaphorical cage.
‘Mummy give me all your attention or else I’ll…..poop. Owkej?’
X’misthija ! Allahares kont minflok Muscat ghax immur ninheba.
Tracy – ma jafx jisthi – lanqas ideja.
Misthija? Bully more like it. He needs to appear strong with the electorate as he wants the 4 MEPs secured next year.
Tracey – mela dak jaf jisthi ?
Muscat has gained the admiration of the Lowellites at the expense of Malta’s already tarnished reputation with the rest of the world.
Unless this is diversionary tactic to deflect attention from more pressing misdeeds I believe he’s trying to do another Mintoff brinkmanship. Lino Spiteri almost spelled it out in his column on Times of Malta just a few days ago.

Shame on so many of us who discarded former Prime minister Gonzi. Go to 1’40” and listen to a true statesman…and then weep.

Amazing how words are nothin’ for some people.
Well, we are well in. In the bad press all over the western world.
Unfortunate Malta – in the world headlines negatively. Can Muscat appear in public? – what embarrassment!!
He got his 5 minutes of fame… and more now. Hope he’s happy, because I sure am not.

Sorry Daphne, I missed her comment when I submitted the link.
Thanks

It seems that a protest is being called for Saturday at 1000 in Valletta. I think it should be banned. This is asking for trouble.
