Now we’re talking: Marlene Mizzi versus Helga Ellul, a perfect summing up of Labour standards versus the PN’s

Helga Ellul - how wonderful to have her representing Malta in the European Parliament

Helga Ellul – how wonderful to have her representing Malta in the European Parliament

The Labour Party’s star ‘bizniss’ woman EP candidate is Marlene Mizzi, who owns two nondescript toyshops, one in Valletta and another in Rabat which looks virtually abandoned, and a hole-in-the-wall Rabat boutique selling tacky clothes for tacky weddings (though I once bought a cute skirt there some years ago), but who is an expert at very loud and relentless self-promotion all over Super One televison, the newspapers and Facebook.

The Nationalist Party’s is Helga Ellul, a star of industry, who ran the hugely successful Playmobil operation in Malta for so many years that she has become a sort of institution. And there’s absolutely no self-promotion there.

Helga Ellul is possibly the polar opposite of Marlene Mizzi. She only speaks when necessary, and then only to talk precise sense. And you won’t find her posting kooky pictures of dressed-up kittens, her new shoes or her latest outfits on Facebook, complete with ill-spelt and poorly constructed remarks and descriptions.

Comparisons, they say, are odious, especially between two women. But I believe that in this case that comparison is absolutely necessary. It says everything about the different standards of the Labour Party and the PN – to say nothing of the different quality of those who throw their weight behind either party.

Joseph Zahra’s presence next to Lawrence Gonzi taht it-tinda didn’t go unnoticed either.

Chosen by Pope Francesco to preside his special commission entrusted with clearing the vatican’s bank and institutions of all sleaze and cobwebs.

Nice, isn’t it? In other words, the Vatican appoints an (ex-) Banker to preside over investigations on the operations of Vatican bankers.

    • Catsrbest says:

My thought exactly. What a great economist J. F. X. Zahra is. I’m sure if he was not chosen by the Pope, he would have been asked for the PN’s MEP list. I also said to myself, now why didn’t the Pope choose John Dalli BA.

  3. Tabatha White says:

What a smart and stylish move by both Mrs Ellul and the NP.

    Just perfect.

  4. ciccio says:

In Malta, politics is not about quality, but quantity.

For instance, the more Facebook ‘Likes’ you have, the better you are as a politician.

  5. H.P. Baxxter says:

    Yes yes yes bloody yes!

What a whopping great piece of news! Best I’ve heard since the doctor told us Ritienne was not pregnant.

    H.P. votes Helga.

(P.S. I’m not a Playmobil fan myself. I’m more of a Lego man. But bloody hell! Helga Ellul for MEP! Genau all the way!)

  6. NZ says:

Great to Have Ms. Ellul on board!

  7. TinaB says:

Helga Ellul is the epitome of intelligence and class – unlike Marlene Mizzi, a spoilt brat whose bragging and showing off appear to be her greatest assets.

  8. FP says:

Comparing Ellul to Mizzi is like comparing everything to nothing.

  9. Roy says:

I had the pleasure of interviewing her some three years ago, with the discussion focussing on business and industry in Malta. I remember thinking what a refreshing difference from the other CEOs and MDs I was also speaking to in the same period. Straightforward communication, wrapped in Teutonic aplomb.

  10. Catsrbest says:

Marlene Mizzi is the typical Maltese gellieda/blabbermouth, while Helga Ellul has exactly the opposite type of German mentality, that is why she only speaks when necessary and talks precise sense.

  11. Jack II says:

Mrs.Ellul has my vote primarily for her achievements.

She was instrumental in the success of Playmobil in Malta, safeguarding jobs and income for hundreds of families whilst Marlene Mizzi with her confrontational and “gellieda” attitude has had a record for failures with the result being employees losing their jobs. The difference is plain for all to see.

  12. Spiru says:

Baxxter – you a Lego man? Me too! But I don’t like the Lego Chima…

    • H.P. Baxxter says:

In my day, before Lego went camp, we only had castles and cities and that sort of stuff.

Happy days, when I led my glorious Lego armies to victory after victory in the War of Counterpane. The defence of the citadel during the Siege of Dining Table lasted a whole afternoon.

This was after Eileen Montesin had been taken off air, by the way. During the Golden Years I never even saw a Lego set, let alone owned one. That’s when Helga Ellul, bless her, saved my childhood.

  13. candida says:

    Bil-Malti, lanqas ix-xita fejn in-nida.

Prosit – rapprezentazzjoni eccellenti u nispera li titla.

    Good luck, Mrs Ellul.

  14. U Le! says:

Helga Ellul , Roberta Metsola and Stefano Mallia would be the ideal trio in Europe for Malta.

    • H.P. Baxxter says:

Trio? Make that a tetrad, and to hell with Labour. Four-to-two is historical justice. Anything else is Maltese perversion.

  15. Socrates says:

I have had the privilege of knowing Helga Ellul through work for a number of years. She is disciplined and a smart thinker.

Congratulations, Mrs Ellul, for your decision. You fully deserve the overwhelming support of the electorate.

  16. Not Sandy:P says:

Marlene Mizzi’s latest cover photo on Facebook is of her posing for a self-portrait by iPad with her daughter. (Note to Alexandra Mizzi. Take off your sunglasses when taking photos of yourself.)

Marlene’s previous cover photo was one of her cats, prompting a childish comment from her grown-up daughter.

The photo before that was a Laburisti-in-lace mother and daughter modelling debut.

Really promising MEP material, I must say.

  17. Arturo Mercieca says:

It’s good to see a person who made her mark in manufacturing getting so much accolades.

Only a few days ago, this blog was quite critical of the PM’s remarks about having a future in manufacturing. And incidentally, this was after the PM’s visit to Playmobil which Helga Ellul has built up.

In actual fact, it is manufacturing (and to a certain degree, agriculture) that creates real wealth. Services only serve to redistribute it but not to create it.

[Daphne – I won’t bother arguing. I will only point out that you are clearly thinking of the national economy, not the global economy. If it were all about manufacturing, India would be rich and Monaco and Switzerland poor.]

  18. Joan says:

    Wow this is great news.

Good luck Mrs Ellul, you have my vote.

  19. Thoughtful says:

Excellent. Absolutely excellent. Well done PN but, most importantly, thank you Helga Ellul for making this commitment.

  20. Pontius says:

    Daphne,
After reading your article, William Shakespeare springs to mind., when he wrote ” Some are born great, some achieve greatness and some have greatness trust upon them “. You can judge for yourself out of these to who was born great. Enough said!

  21. edgar says:

My 10 points go to Helga Ellul. What a breath of fresh air.

  22. AE says:

I am so grateful that a person of the calibre of Mrs Ellul has decided to contest the MEP elections.

It would be very telling on the electorate if for some reason she is not elected. And our loss. I hope she adopts some smart marketing techniques to get elected. As we witnessed in the last national election – it is all about marketing, at least until the post is won.

  23. Chris Ripard says:

I can assure all your readers that Helga is absolutely passionate about Malta.

Work was always work but she also took a personal interest in all her employees’ welfare.

I have no doubt whatsoever that her election could only be an immeasurable benefit to Malta.

If we choose a dodgy burger when we can have prime steak, we must need to have our collective heads examined.

  24. Bendu says:

All this glowing praise for Ms Ellul confirm my assessment of the person when I saw her fleetingly on TV some weeks ago. Congratulations. Malta will be proud to have you as one of our MEPs.

  25. silvio says:

    That will be the day.

Having a German-born person representing Malta.

  26. Philip Micallef says:

Helga Ellul would be an excellent representative for Malta. She knows the Maltese industrial scene inside out and has led successfully Playmobil for so many years. She is a lady of values and would do Malta proud at the European Parliament.
