The government’s consultative council on LGBT rights has spoken out against the government’s plans for human rights violations

Published: July 12, 2013 at 12:39am

In a statement earlier tonight, the members of the government’s consultative council for LGBT rights said that though they were selected for the council because of their involvement in LGBT issues in particular, human rights are for all.

They said that the council is against any form of threat to the fundamental rights of any individual, including immigrants.

When a government poses a threat to human rights, it said, the council’s purpose is undermined.

Yesterday, the Aditus Foundation resigned from the council in protest at the government’s plans for human rights violations in defiance of a European Court of Human Rights judgement. This morning, Drachma LGBT did the same.

That gives a very positive answer to where the gay lobby stands. Why doesn’t the MGRM resign too? Perhaps Gabi can’t due to her board posts given to her in a meritocratic manner?

“Many Maltese feel strongly about the national interest. So do I. Yet, when nation- states have only interests, but no values, society is very sick.”

Is there any reporter on the ball enough to ask Cyrus Engerer where he stands on this issue?

He’s always been so very vocal with regards to LGBT rights in the past.

Might his silence now have something to do with his having shown an interest in becoming a Member of the European Parliament on a Labour ticket?

[Daphne – He spoke to Times of Malta, that story where they quoted Marlene Farrugia. He said that it made him very sad and that he had a sleepless night.]

Unlike his party boss who said he sleeps well at night because he’s lays said that this is hat he’d do.

It makes you wonder why so many flocked to his cause.

    • bob-a-job says:

      I missed that.

I thought it was the consultative council set up by the government to tackle LGBT rights, of which he is Chairman, that spoke out.

      My mistake.

My partner and I cannot benefit from the special couple’s rate at this gym since we have different surnames, though we share the same address. Oh and we happen to be gay.

  12. Paul Bonnici says:

Illegal immigrants who enter Malta illegally should be treated with dignity and respect, but they must not be accorded the full human rights accorded to law abiding citizen.

So the Maltese have the right to a family life and illegal immigrant will have the same rights and therefore he can bring his family from abroad to join him in Malta.

    Prisoners have limited human rights.

    • Snoopy says:

Why should you equate prisoners who are paying their dues to society with irregular immigrants that fleeing for their lives from states that are trampling on their Human Rights?

    • Natalie Mallett says:

I am sure that if they had the option to travel legally they would have. It would have been far less dangerous and cheaper too.

Why shouldn’t an asylum seeker be allowed to have a family life? Why don’t you thank your lucky stars that you were born in a civilized country and be happy to share your good fortune. Has anyone of them come up to take over your house or your land?

People like you have lost the meaning of the word love and you know what, you are missing out on the good life. It actually feels good and most rewarding to share what you have been given by someone else or what you have managed to achieve by yourself. After all the world belongs to everyone.

I want to share my country with these people and have as much right for my opinion as you do.

  13. Mark says:

At least Cyrus has always been consistent.
