There’s one member of the government’s LGBT consultative council who doesn’t want to upset the government

Beneath the relevant report on The Malta Independent, about the government’s LGBT Consultative Council’s objections to government plans for human rights violations, Carmel/Charles Bayliss writes:

I Carmel Bayliss, independent member within the LGBT CONSULTATIVE COUNCIL disassociate myself from the Council’s statement because this goes beyond our role. In the Government’s party manifesto there was a promise of a Consultative Council for gay rights and this council was enacted on these grounds and nothing else. I do not object that NGOs within the council issue statements in their own name but not in the name or as part of the LGBT CONSULTATIVE COUNCIL.

A reader of this website, Neil S, posted a comment here in response:

Might I say, Mr Bayliss, you’re an embarrassment to the entire gay community, myself included. With people like you on the council, the gay community will never get the rights they deserve because as usual with people like you, you’re unable to see the wood for the trees.

You want equal rights for yourself, but are willing to deny those same rights to others only because they are not gay or Maltese. This is impossible as they go hand in hand.

If you’re really on the council for the betterment of others (and not just for your own personal interest, which is most probably the case) do something constructive. Otherwise resign and stop embarrassing yourself further.

That’s like saying you practise in an anti-discriminatory way in your job between 9 to 5 Monday to Friday but in the weekend you are a member a far right group. It just does not add up.

What a bloody egoist this Carmel Bayliss is.

Mr. Bayliss’s facts are actually wrong.

The “roadmap” mentions the consultative committe on LGBT in paragraph 7 within Chapter 6 ‘Nemmnu f’Socjeta Gusta’ (We believe in a fair society). It is set out under the sub-heading ‘Rispett lejn id-Diversita.’

Under the same subheading, in paragraph 11, the “roadmap” says that: “Permezz ta’ aktar kampanji edukattivi, l-aktar sa mic-ckunija ta’ wliedna, nedukaw aktar dwar id-diversita u kontra l-pregudizzji u r-razzizmu, filwaqt li niggieldu l-bullying, reati ta’ mibgheda (hate crimes) inkluz dak minhabba orjentazzjoni sesswali, razza, etnicita u kulur tal-gilda.” (Through educational campaigns, we will educate, especially from the early years in childhood, about diversity and against prejudice and racism, while resisting bullying and hate crimes, including those related to sexual orientation, race, ethnicity and colour.)

The statement issued by the LGBT Consultative Committee should be seen in this context.

On the other hand Mr. Bayliss it is OK for you to be on the LGBT consultative council and speak on behalf of/for other gays just to push your personal agenda.

Even though many of us gays do not agree with gay marriages or partnerships we still support your right to marry your longtime companion. It is called solidarity.

The people who joined that LGBT Labour group did so out of vanity.
