When they said they would run the government like a business, we should have taken them at their word

Read this story published in Malta Today in 2008, then read Minister Chris Cardona’s and Minister Helena Dalli’s declaration of assets, and take note of the company names. Helena Dalli is married to the Patrick Dalli mentioned here.

  1. La Redoute says:

On his commercial interests with Carmelo Penza, Chris Cardona told MaltaToday that “everyone in the Labour Party would have to dispose of commercial ties, this is a commitment we all made. I will follow suit by transferring my shares and resign from director.”

    • C Falzon says:

What does he mean by ‘transferring shares’? Is he donating them to a charity?

      • Michael says:

No. He’s going to do it Manuel Mallia style, and stash them at home.

One of Labour’s major changes was the trashing of their socialist behaviour. Now it’s all about taking, after “25 years of suffering.”

They say if you can’t beat them, imitate/join them. This is a case in point.

  2. La Redoute says:

Did you notice how all this talk of ministers’ assets and income has deflected attention from Muscat’s?

We know how much his government is paying him for his car. What else is he hiding?

[Daphne – The declaration is for 2012.]

  3. jaqq says:

No wonder they refused the honoraria increase. It was peanuts to them.

  4. Corvo Attano says:

The incomes and the lifestyles don’t match. Cardona for example earned €23,430 in 2012. That looks like 3000 above his opposition honoraria. Did his private practice and directorship only produce a Eur3,000 dividend?

Mallia on the other hand is a fat cat. One wonders why he is wasting himself on politics with incomes of that nature.

  5. WhoamI? says:

I actually believe Muscat’s cash in the bank is realistic.

    1) He’s not paid for the house himself. His parents did. This is why there is no loan. He’s not old enough to be able to make a living, pay off a house loan, and yet still manage to feed a family and run a household.

    2) €70,000 in the bank is not a big deal for someone who was working as MEP – which is his only real significant job on the CV.

Imma Manuel Mallia – €495k cash. How stupid to declare them. How dim. He doesn’t fear for his family’s and his own security. If they are cash and he has no problem declaring them, where did they come from, and why are they not in the bank?

U haga ohra, why does he need to steal water from fountains and fight against the crush at Lidl when he is a multi-millionaire?

    • Francis Saliba MD says:

Perhaps he became a millionaire BECAUSE he does his shopping at Lidl and because his household steals water from a public fountain. Wanna bet?

    • Allo Allo says:

Just because it’s cash, it doesn’t mean that it isn’t kept in a bank – in safe deposit boxes, for example.

  6. Lomax says:

No wonder the government fell over themselves to lower the fees for development permits, to start the process for land reclamation and revise local plans (apart from giving a blanket permit to hotels to raise floors).

The top government politicans have direct interest in real estate development property – they stand to gain if there is more development.

  7. Ghoxrin Punt says:

interesting how neither Manuel Mallia nor Jose Herrera have declared an interest in their law practices.

  8. Ghoxrin Punt says:

It’s interesting to see that Cardona, who earns about 30% of what I do, managed to obtain a bank loan that is double mine.
