Absolutely no understanding of boundaries or notion of what’s proper

Manuel Micallef, chairman of Labour TV, dining out with TVM staff (incuding his girlfriend) last night.

Last night journalists at Television Malta held their annual summer outing and had supper together.

It’s a family thing, so they could take along spouses, boyfriends, girlfriends and children.

New ‘journalist’ (Malta Taghna Lkoll) member Norma Saliba came accompanied by her boyfriend Manuel Micallef, but he just so happens to be Malta Taghna Lkoll chairman of the Labour Party’s television station. Being that kind of person, he thought nothing of dining out with the competition’s staff, ghax you know, mhux xorta and it’s not a commercial activity.

Somehow, I can’t imagine the HSBC Malta chairman, if he had a girlfriend who works at Bank of Valletta, going to a BOV staff supper and sitting there as just another boyfriend.

This Maltese boundary-crossing is just so ridiculous.

Reflecting the de facto situation, both PBS and ONE are now extensions of the PL propaganda machine.

I am informed that Norma Saliba joined PBS on secondment from her post as PR of MUESAC (ghax miskina kienet mahqura taht Gonzi). This move was done with the direct intervention of the Office of the Prime Minister.

Relax Daphne, it’s an informal event, you can chat with your adversary…no?

[Daphne – It’s precisely BECAUSE it’s an informal event that it’s unacceptable. Having to explain these basic things is not only exhausting. It makes me desperately and increasingly aware of the vast cultural gulf in Malta.]

With every day that passes these people prove and confirm that they have no idea of appropriate conduct.

The head of TVM News Reno Bugeja, together with all ‘his’ newsroom, eating, chatting and laughing with Labour’s One News chief Manuel Micallef… Dardid Malta is back.

    • Alex says:

Imagine if this happened under the PN government.

Today we would have woken up to a press conference in front of the Broadcasting Authority, a blog by the Law Commissioner, a series of ‘horrified’ Facebook comments by the Mistra Dentist who chairs the MCST and a big ‘Skandlu’ heading on L-Orizzont.

In print and other media in Germany, one is often made aware of political and/or business “boundary-crossing” at social events.

I could indeed visualise and imagine a “HSBC Malta chairman” attending a “BOV staff supper”, if he were to have a “girlfriend”, who incidentally worked for the BOV.

At some point in time, one should accept living in A.D.2013 with all pros and contras, be it in Malta under whatever government.

Labelling “this Maltese boundary-crossing” as “just so ridiculous” seems to me, in this particular issue, as being too stark and too harsh a criticism.

    • curious says:

Too harsh a criticism, you say? Imagine these headlines on L-Orizzont:

      IL-KAPIJIET TAX-XANDIR NAZZJONALI U TAN-NET JIEKLU U JIDDEVERTU FLIMKIEN

      Ritratti esklussivi fil-harga tat-Torca ta’ nhar il-Hadd.

        @ curious

Well, I wish to stand by my previous remark and I do not wish to modify my opinion in/on this issue.

Moreover, I would find it quite strange, if any daily newspaper would consider reporting such an event as a news “headline”.

  12. Gahan says:

It was a social evening organised by the TVM staff, in some sort of restaurant between colleagues , and Micallef was invited.

Don’t they meet in other fora?

    I’m not being sarcastic here.

[Daphne – They shouldn’t. It’s completely inappropriate. He’s not somebody who simply works for the competition. He RUNS the competition. And basically, Norma Saliba’s professional loyalties to her employer are in competition with her personal intimacy with the father of her child. What does she tell him, if he wants information on what’s going on at TVM? Not that he needs it nowadays: they’re both Labour TV.]

    • Leo Said says:

quote Daphne: […. What does she tell him, if he wants information on what’s going on at TVM? Not that he needs it nowadays: they’re both Labour TV.]

      Exactly.

Hence, there should be no tangible reason why one should view this issue as “so ridiculous”.

Furthermore, as Malta apparently enjoys a liberal-democracy, all individuals have a right to an own opinion and its possible expression. In other words, your good self are free to regard the issue as “completely inappropriate” while others are free to consider the issue as a rather normal social event.

    • Gahan says:

You can’t be serious, so you’re telling me that if NET TV wanted to know anything on what was going at PBS ,they didn’t have the means to get the required info from formal and informal channels?

We all suspected that this happened before and is happening now under this government.May I add that it’s not the first time that foreign media were caught that they were in cahoots pushing their agenda.

I’d rather have this photo and take the PBS news with a pinch of salt, which is what I’m doing
Today’s headlines on PBS was the stenciled silhouette of two lovers on Piano’s City Gate, as if it’s of more importance than the Syrian Crisis or the burning of three cars in Zabbar.

Not entirely off topic: In yesterday’s 8pm news on TVM, Martin Luther King was referred to as “a man of black skin with a pure white heart”.

At home we all agreed this was an atrocious proof of the latent racism that is now standard by the public broadcaster for which the Minister of Police and the Armed Forces is also responsible.

  17. Sergio Demicoli says:

Unbelievable how Norma’s and Manuel’s conflict of interest is endorsed by the leaders of the PL .

  18. ciccio says:

Makes one ask the important question:

Who is the head of the PBS newsroom – is it Reno Bugeja, or is it Manwel Micallef?

Perhaps Reno Bugeja can answer this with a special edition of Dissett.
