Chairman of Refugee Appeals Board is 25-year-old Labour mayor of Fgura, company secretary of Malta Freeport Corporation, former Forum Zghazagh Laburisti ‘elve’ and…IN FAVOUR OF PUSHBACKS

The Refugee Appeals Board has been appointed. It has five chambers, each with a different chairman, members and secretary. The chairman of Chamber 2 is Byron Camilleri, born in 1988, currently Labour mayor of Fgura, recently a Labour Party FZL ‘elve’, just appointed company secretary to Malta Freeport Corporation (board member: Ronnie Pellegrini; CEO: fellow ex ‘elve’ Aaron Farrugia).

But more crucially, he backs the prime minister’s stand on pushbacks and allows comments on his Facebook page from people calling EU Commissioner Malmstrom a “BITCH”. See screenshots below.

The chairman of Chamber 5 is Deandra Schembri, aged 27, married to Labour MP Silvio Schembri who has been appointed by the government to chair parliament’s house committee on financial and economic affairs. She has also been appointed to the Police Board. One of the members of the Refugee Appeals Board Chamber 5 is the lawyer Marion Camilleri, Law Commissioner Franco Debono’s bridesmaid, who shares his office and works with him.

I’m sure they all have vast experience in refugee law and human rights. At least we know that people’s lives are in safe hands. Not.

  2. Harry Purdie says:

Ah, just love it. We are being governed and regulated by twits, twats and twerps.

  3. Rumplestiltskin says:

Insanity is reigning supreme. How can someone publicly declaring himself in favour of pushbacks be appointed chairman of the Refugee Appeals Board?

    • rjc says:

      Ah! Don’t ask such questions.

Where have you been since March 10?

    • Liberal says:

I would go even further and ask how can a politician be appointed chairman of a Refugee Appeals Board. A clearer case of a conflict of interest couldn’t be made.

Easy, he’ll just deny them asylum and send them back. No push backs but the same result achieved “legally”.

  6. Peewee says:

Ivan Buttigieg is a failed Labour candidate from the last election and manager of the insurance agency owned by the General Workers Union.

He makes no secret of his opinion of “Arabs” (ironically the agency represents a Qatari insurance company) and his undying love for the Great Leader.

I have had cases heard by the former Refugee Appeals Board. I now see we will have even more opportunity to appeal from its decisions which also means applicants get to stay here much longer. Which I don’t mind at all. Most of them are much more polite and respectful than Maltese clients.
