Isn’t Spain governed by a socialist party?
If so, this behaviour explains everything.
No, that was Zapatero who was ousted after failing miserably in getting a grasp on the country’s needs. But it does not matter, it is the mentality inbred within the people that does.
Spain has a conservative government which is trying to make right the damage socialite Zappatero did to the Spanish economy.
As to the behavior by the socialist, don’t be surprised. In Malta, after 25 years of a cultural revolution they re emerged with same aggressive marmalja attitude.
Quite the opposite. The governing People’s Party is comfortably right, a member of the EPP and supports economic liberalism. More to do with the similar Latinate bloodlines methinks.
Spain is governed by a Christian Democratic party. These comments have nothing to do with Socialism, nor with Christian democracy, but stem from the intolerant chauvinism more correctly associated with right-wing beliefs.
The Maltese troglodytes who bad-mouthed Commissioner Malmstrom and the immigrants may have been mostly PL supporters, but by no stretch of the imagination can they be described as Socialists of any hue.
That kind of reasoning doesn’t do you much honour, Michael. You sound like those American nuts who equate the word ‘socialist’ with the devil incarnate, which for them is Communism. Socialism in Europe and indeed the rest of the world has very little to do with the Maltese ‘Socjalisti’ we know and despise.
Spain’s current government is the centre-right Popular Party who have also been falling miserably to address Spain’s problems and who are currently crumbling beneath a series of corruption investigations that also involve their prime minister.
Look up ‘Barcenas’ and ‘Gurtel’, as the two most prominent cases have been dubbed, and use Google Translate if necessary. There’s quite a ruckus going on right now and making front page news almost every day in the Spanish press.
And, if it isn’t [it isn’t] what does it explain, your bias?
Civilisation starts from France and moves upwards!
Have you been to France recently?
Meanwhile on twitter, the pushback stance makes news again with a ‘Pushback Airlines’ spoof

Did the hate comments directed at Malmstrom by Maltese intellectuals also make headline news on Euronews etc.?
Julie Girling said “Their abuse shows they have no argument as they can only resort to the lowest form of language.”
She’s absolutely right.
The tragedy is that in a democracy, even the most stupid have a vote.
“Girling said: “It may be that to be trolled goes with the job. However, the Spanish Twitter trolls aren’t doing their argument any favours by trolling me.
“Their abuse shows they have no argument as they can only resort to the lowest form of language.
“The people of Gibraltar need our support. They will not be bullied by the Spanish Government or by a minority of the Spanish people. Neither will I.””
Now that’s what I call a reply of someone “with bolls.”
Imagine that criticism happening in Malta to a Tooth Fairy. The reaction would be “Close down Twitter.”
A significant part of Gibraltar’s population is of Maltese origin. So no surprises there.
You got it spectacularly, completely, diametrically opposite wrong.
One of their more recent prime ministers was called Peter Caruana. Baxx, a high percentage of the population is indeed of Maltese origin, I mean they are about as Maltese as civilised queuing, but at least in terms of lineage they are Maltese.
I have to say that Daphne’s comparison is also a non-starter this time because there are idiots everywhere and this Twitter abuse does not seem to have been instigated by Spanish politicians as happened in Malta.
Quite apart from this matter, to put things into perspective for those having a field day hating on Spain, Gibraltar directly provoked this latest flare in tensions by dumping huge concrete blocks into contested waters that are not part of the maritime territory ceded to Gibraltar under the Treaty of Utrecht, and thus destroying the livelihood of fishermen whose families have fished there for generations.
That besides Gibraltar being a constant thorn in Spain’s side as a tax haven, smuggling route and highly-polluting offshore fueling zone.
Oh Christ, here we go again. Falklands II.
Speaking of the Falklands, some less bright Spaniards are talking about establishing an alliance with Argentina to ‘simultaneously recapture both their rightful territories’.
Though a Spanish friend of mine swears it’s just a ploy to draw attention away from the totally messed up financial situation.
If push came to shove we all know who Malta would side with. Bloody dagos, all of us.
Well, I suppose that apart from possessing very little brain cells, the beahviour of this sort of people also reflects what is being fed to them by their politicians.
Listening to the Italian Minister for the Interior, Angelino Alfano, speak about asylum seekers and immigration, he said “we do have a problem, but it is not an emergency, and it isn’t something that cannot be controlled”. On the same day we saw how people on a beach in Siracusa formed a human-chain to assist a boat-load of asylum seekers get safely to the shore.
Here in Malta, we have a Prime Minister who first meant to break an international law by pushing-back asylum seekers, without giving them the chance to place a request for asylum, and who proceeded to ‘stamp his feet’ and tell EU Commissioner Malmstrom, in his ‘English humurous’ way to take them to her country. Adding these incitements to the very poor level of intelligence of many Maltese people, has given us the outcome we are experiencing.
Very well said.
Besides, has anyone worked out how much the Malta Tourism Authority will have to spend in advertising to counter the damage done to Malta’s reputation?
Sadly, economic recession is usually accompanied by heightened nationalism. If the 20s and 30s are anything to go by, we may have a big problem on our hands.
Imo, we should not ponder too much on what a private individual says or writes. More so, if what he writes, exposes him for a stupid idiot. Or worse, as greedy and selfish, saying anything to advance his personal interests, at the expense of others. We say, “Nehqa ta’ hmar, qat ma telet is-sema.
But it gets very serious, if that person is a public person, in key positions. Throughout history, these persons had the power to bring countries to war, misery and ruin.
I auger that the British MEP and EU commissioner are not unduly deterred by idiotic comments. If they cannot stand the heat, they should not be in the kitchen.
An auger is a kind of drill. Augur.
Good point Baxxter, about auger being a drill.
As for augur, I should have said, ” I augur well that…..”.
Oh don’t worry. Even my English teacher got that one wrong. “A very auger bit will be turned into your hearts”.
