They should have told her to send a cheque, because to (mis)quote Naomi Campbell, they couldn’t be bothered to get dressed and park in Valletta for Eur200

If my dogs had a vote, they wouldn’t have voted for Michelle Muscat’s husband.

Aren’t these the people harassing, intimidating and threatening the veteriniarian Trevor Zammit and his wonderful animal hospital in Ta’ Qali?

Or was that some other vet and animal hospital I read about.

This woman, whose smile gets faker by the day (the ‘crying eyes’ look – insufferable) collected Eur3,000 at her ‘classics under the stars’ event at Girgenti palace, and DISTRIBUTED THEM BETWEEN 14 NGOS FOR ANIMALS.

That means they each got Eur214.28 (mitt lira Maltin).

If I had been at the head of any one of those NGOs, I’d have said ‘Please send a cheque’. It’s a little excessive, isn’t it, to expect people to break up their day, get rigged up, find a parking place in Valletta, hang around waiting for the cameras, all to collect mitt lira Maltin from somebody who is only interested in using them for publicity.

And meanwhile, while Mrs Muscat distributes cheques for cats and dogs, her husband is treating 102 human beings, including a baby and four pregnant women, like a cargo of non-perishable goods.

The man in the picture is a certain Lawrence Magrin. He and his brother spend hours every day doing the rounds feeding and generally tending to strays. I doubt Eur214 will see them through a week of dog and cat food.

Whatever the hospital was meant for, George Pullicino’s government offered it to be used as a private veterinary clinic/hospital.

Trevor Zammit’s letter of intent was the best proposal accepted by the government.

The service is impeccable, even if not without fault (within human parameters). 24/7 veterinary surgeons in attendance in well equipped environment.

The government only demanded a rent and treatment to injured strays picked up by the animal welfare ambulance service as per agreement with Dr. Zammit.

It was reported that sanctuaries would have a 20% discount on services but since no tarrif was published nobody knew until today how it worked out. Eventually it was at the discretion of a usually generous Dr. Zammit.

The above distribution was not held in Valletta but in Lija at Villa Francija, the PM’s residence. It was said on the news to fund sanctuaries but many of these NGOs don’t run sanctuaries. Every euro helps to assist animal lovers to care for the animals.

Unfortunately, the €250,000 earmarked in Tonio Fenech’s budget to assist animal sanctuaries (Animal Welfare Initiatives) were taken out of their mouth to fund the animal welfare department.

I am told that SPCA Gozo made two trips to Malta to attend the press conferences and only got €150.

[Daphne – More fool they. Some people will do anything to suck up and curry favour.]

      • Mark J says:

Unfair comment Daph! Nobody knew what they were getting!
And even €150 feeds some dogs & cats
Indeed a pittance but always more then the blue “classics under the stars” gave for the animals! ;)

  2. caflisa says:

Daphne, I think it was the Canadian model Linda Evangelista who said that she didn’t bother to get out of bed for less than a 10,000 dollar photo shoot.

  3. Paddling Duck says:

    More like 90 old liri.

  4. TROY says:

You meen Trevor Zammit’s wonderful pivate hospital.

This hospital was meant to help animal sanctuaries in their plight not charge them in the way Trevor does.

  5. Josette says:

Evita Peron, patronising dogs and cats while her husband treats human beings like cattle.

  6. M. Cassar says:

The high society with a good eye for a bargain strikes again it seems. She got a photo op for next to nothing because the organizations will no doubt all publish the handout photos and these will be circulated around.

Those with nothing between their ears look on in awe at ‘kemm hi orrajt miskina’. If her tone becomes any more syrupy it will become the rule to be shown a notice, before any of her appearances, warning us to take some antiemetics before watching the feature, you know, just like we get for flashing lights.

    Dal-pajjiz spicca.

  8. Min Jaf says:

And how much did it cost the taxpayer to set up the entire sound, lighting and seating infrastructure for the concert, and to pay, and cart all the way up to Girgenti, an entire orchestra?

    Certainly more than Euro 3,000.-

  9. canon says:

I look forward to the day that Michelle Muscat holds a fund-raising event at Girgenti in aid of African refugees.

  10. What? says:

I know an NGO which was excluded those saving the hassle of going.

  11. What? says:

Please note that ‘those’ in the first sentence should read ‘thus’

  12. Stella says:

Michelle said that if it wasn’t for these NGOS we would have many more stray dogs and cats.If it wasn’t for her husband we would t have another 102 immigrants like strays trying to find a welcoming country. What priorities.

  13. Betty says:

Mr Magrin receiving his cheque in the photo, would quickly tell the Franciscan Lady how long it would take him to spend the mitt lira to feed the lucky dogs under his care. Bil-qamel se jkollna nimxu.

Just wait for the pre budget document by the Finance Wizard Scicluna.

  14. Paul says:

We collected three grand at a private party for less than a hundred guests. And then again the money went to one charity, of course, not 14.

Not very good at fund-raising, Me-shall.

  15. Jozef says:

The event which tickets ran out before the booking office opened.

Meantime, there may be trouble ahead.

Oh, sorry, wrong thread, didn’t notice it’s about Naomi Campbell.

  18. Michael Seychell says:

Actually even less than ‘mitt lira Maltin’.

  19. La Redoute says:

It’s less than mitt lira Maltin, which would be Eur243.20.

  20. Rover says:

And what are those hangers on doing?
Haven’t they got anything better to do?

  21. ciccio says:

So, do we have two prime ministers now? Is it like Prime Minister Joseph and Prime Minister Michelle?

They seem to make alternating appearances.

As for veterinarian Trevor Zammit, he’s got my full support and solidarity.

    • TROY says:

Why does Trevor have your full support?
Maybe cicco is an ex-minister who sat on a wall?

      • ciccio says:

If ‘cicco’ refers to me, no, I am not an ex-minister and I do not normally sit on walls.
But I can detect when private interests are under political attack.

  22. Antoine Vella says:

What is typically Maltese is that in such a small country we have to have no less than 14 NGOs (probably more) all doing the same work with animals.

  23. Rumplestiltskin says:

Such a pathetic ploy for publicity. €3,000 divided among 14 NGOs. What can each do with €214.28? Not much.

However, €3,000 to one or two organizations would have been of greater benefit. But then, giving out one or two cheques would not have afforded Michelle as much time in the limelight.

  24. Pinu Primus says:

That false smile is beginning to look like a rictus.

  25. Marin C Galea says:

Hmm. Cats and dogs is about right. Once again, not one penny went towards horses. I’d love to know on which criteria these beneficiaries are chosen.

  26. tal biki says:

Dawn l-NGOS kollha? veru esagerazzjoni. After all, they all work for the same cause.

Veru iblah min marrilha. Was Moira Delia there?

    • Calculator says:

Too true. It’s particular problem in Malta to have so many NGOs for the same cause – and it’s not just in the animal sector, mind you – competing with each other and fighting over resources.

      • Last Post says:

Actually there are only half as many NGOs as there are animal species on this little rock…

  27. TORRETS says:

I think NGO organisers are made up of some individuals who needs to get a life or individuals who like to feel important and are in need for some attention. Well Mrs Muscat has either nothing better to do or she wants more attention than her husband.

    • Liberal says:

I don’t think this is a fair comment. I know some members of NGOs who spend a significant part of their salary (and all of their free time) on their NGO work, just to clear the mess the selfish individuals leave behind.

  28. Kevin says:

I was trying to put my finger on what is wrong with the woman’s face. You captured it perfectly “the ‘crying eyes’ look.”

I’d also add the chin – many Maltese women have that kind of chin set and I find that it usually reflects hard heartedness.

  29. Mrs M says:

How sad, she never misses an occasion for publicity.

Mrs Muscat does not know the meaning of supporting wife of the PM; she has to be in constant competition even with her husband.

I’m sure Labour would happily take her on board if she doesn’t make it in Australia – she’s got all the necessary qualities.

What’s with the casual look? Can’t these bozos wear a jacket and tie? Geez they’re posing for a picture not caught out sleeves rolled, grafting.
