“Two Michelles meet for lunch” – this is now getting really sad
On timesofmalta late this evening, accompanied by the front-on version of the side-on photograph which The Huffington Post published a couple of days ago and which I uploaded on this site yesterday:
TWO MICHELLES MEET FOR LUNCH
Michelle Muscat, the Prime Minister’s wife was guest of Michelle Obama, the US President’s wife at a luncheon held at the StudioMuseum in Harlem.
In a dress by New York designer Carolina Herrera, Ms Obama said that she held the meeting in Harlem on purpose since she wanted to highlight the importance of such a place in American history.
M. Muscat took the opportunity to showcase Malta’s artistic talent by wearing a printed silk dress by Maltese designers Charles & Ron. Her dress featured the Maltese eight pointed cross.
What utter tosh. They’ve become Doublespeak experts. I knew for a fact that they didn’t “meet for lunch” – why would they have met for lunch? – because when I saw that picture on The Huffington Post, it was one of around 50 ‘WAGs queue up and get their picture taken with Mrs Obama’ identikit photos.
It was one of those ‘let’s entertain the spouses’ events from hell where you get a vast room full of women and not a man in sight, events designed to drive home the (progressive) fact that the leaders are all men and the spouses are all women and that world politics is no different, on this score, to football.
The men assemble to listen to speeches about Serious Things, and the women dress up and are entertained. Yes, even in 2013.
But just in case, I went back again to check, and here you are:
Michelle Obama calls Harlem a cultural gem
MEGHAN BARR | September 24, 2013 03:54 PM EST | AP
NEW YORK — Extolling the virtues of Harlem’s rich cultural history, Michelle Obama hosted a luncheon for the spouses of foreign dignitaries Tuesday in the historic New York City neighborhood she described as “quintessentially American.”
The first lady spoke to about 50 spouses of chiefs of state and heads of government who are attending the UN General Assembly. The group toured The Studio Museum in Harlem, which was founded in 1968 by artists and civic and community leaders to provide space for modern and contemporary black art.
“There’s a reason why I wanted to bring you all to Harlem today,” said Obama, who was wearing a blue and white dress by Carolina Herrera. “And that is because this community … is infused with a kind of energy and passion that is quintessentially American, but that has also touched so many people around the world.”

Clearly written by a gay reporter. Probably the same one who sampled the gingerbread.
Either that or they’re putting oestrogen in the water.
Meghan Barr is a woman.
Times of Malta made it sound – deliberately? – as if Michelle Muscat was invited on her own by Mrs. Obama.
And a dress with Maltese crosses? How naff.
The Times simply published the story it received, including the grammatical errors.
Is the Times simply being dishonest or is it just slipshod reporting ?
Who are these people? And to think that were it not for you, Daphne, they’d probably get away with it. I cannot believe so many idiots around actually swallow all this rubbish. I am now officially on suicide watch.
Michelle Muscat’s dress is hideous and unflattering. You have to have a killer figure, and a great deal of height, to pull that off and, ideally, be 20 years younger. And even then, the dress itself would be ugly.
Ah, the famous ‘Maltese Cross’ which is as Maltese as the George cross.
The George Cross is definitely Maltese – yes it was awarded to the Maltese Nation for its part in WWII. The so-called Maltese Cross (the 8-pointed one) still belongs to the KOM and rightly or wrongly is being adopted by whoever is ignorant of local history.

That fabric design, the fabric itself, is clearly intended for soft furnishings, not dresses.
