Go, go, go Sandro Chetcuti (and who knows who else…)
There an interesting bit of information on the Government Property Department website: the government is selling off by tender the site of the old Medical Stores, disused for years, in Madliena, which is potentially worth millions.
The Lands Department, which is responsible for the decision to sell government property, falls within the remit of Parliamentary Secretary Michael Farrugia, a friend and associate of multifarious developers, who in turn reports directly to the prime minister.
Basically, it is the prime minister who is responsible for the Lands Department, as it falls within his portfolio along with Michael Farrugia and the Malta Environment and Planning Authority.
This is the available information:
Sale of a site in Triq Ta’ Stronka corner with Triq il-Gmiel, Swieqi, shown edged in red and marked A on plan P.D.2013_409. Tenders are to be accompanied by a Bid-Bond for an amount of €10,000 as stipulated in the tender conditions. Offers below the amount of nine hundred Euro (€900.00) per square metre will not be considered. The road area indicated in green and marked A1 on the same plan P.D.2013_409 is not included in this sale. However, all expenses for the formation of this road area, and all services relative to the same road area shall be incurred exclusively by the successful tenderer and/or his/her successors in title. No compensation of any nature whatsoever shall be due by the Government of Malta to the successful tenderer and/or his/her successors in title in respect of this road area. A fee of €200 will be charged for each copy of tender document.

“What exactly does Havel have to do with Malta? Why does he warrant a monument on these Islands when there are far more worthy and relevant that should be commemorated?.”
Such as one Dominic Mintoff, no doubt.
900 euros per sq. metre in that area sounds very cheap.
How devious, calling it Swieqi. I have lived there for 35 years and the locality is called Madliena, closer to Gharghur than anywhere else. It is nowhere near Swieqi except that the postal code is SWQ.
So in real terms the minimum offer accepted should be that of (€900.00 per square meter) x (Land space of 15,225.18m²) which amounts to the sum of €13,702,662.00
I understand that the Old Medical Stores are protected for historical reasons, and cannot be demolished; but of course MEPA will forget this if some Labour pampalun gets the land
The land is still used as medical stores. A factory in San Gwann has been bought (which is smaller than the land being sold) where these stores are being transferred. Nothing whatsoever is mentioned about the history of this ex-British Services site which is practically in the same situation it was left by the British.
The ammunition depo is still intact underneath and it hosts bats, which should be protected historically and ecologically.
