It was the prime minister who appointed Mrs Mizzi – not Malta Enterprise – so why speak as though he wasn’t involved, when he was the centre of it?

Konrad Mizzi

Times of Malta reports from parliament this evening:

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said this evening that he was ‘convinced’ that Sai Mizzi Liang, the Energy Minster’s wife, would get results for Malta following her appointment as envoy of Malta Enterprise in Asia.

Reacting to opposition questions as to whether he was concerned that, while he was in China, a government agency had engaged a minister’s wife, Dr Muscat said he would have been worried had it been the Chinese government which engaged Mrs Mizzi, not Malta Enterprise.

He was convinced that Mrs Mizzi would attract investment to Malta.

Well, I should ruddy well hope the prime minister thinks Mrs Konrad Mizzi is going to get good results for Malta, however he defines them.

He’s the one who appointed her.

Whoever asked the question about whether he was concerned that she was engaged by a government agency while he was in China can’t be reading the newspapers (or this website) too closely.

It has been reported already that Malta Enterprise did not appoint or engage Mrs Konrad Mizzi. The corporation’s only involvement was in negotiating her contract, and that was done directly and only by the ‘chairman’s office’ (meaning Mario Vella).

It has been clearly reported, quoting both Malta Enterprise and the government, that Mrs Mizzi is a government envoy, not a Malta Enterprise representative, and that is why she has the same terms and conditions as an ambassador.

She was appointed directly by the government, not Malta Enterprise, and that means the prime minister. The minister for Malta Enterprise did not even know anything about it.

Mario Vella was in China with Muscat, so who at Malta Enterprise was in negotiations with Mrs Konrad Mizzi?

    • Min Jaf says:

Mario Vella, with China, while he was there, with the knowledge of Joseph Muscat who was in China as well, and obviously with the knowledge of Mrs Mizzi, but not, it would seem, with the knowledge of Minister Konrad Mizzi.

I quote from the above “It has been clearly reported, quoting both Malta Enterprise and the government, that Mrs Mizzi is a government envoy, not a Malta Enterprise representative, and that is why she has the same terms and conditions as an ambassador.”

To confirm this, Konrad Mizzi, when pressed by a journalist for his wife’s (or ex) remuneration, replied that he can only say that she will be receiving a Scale 3 salary. He suggested that, as for her benefits, the journalist should contact the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Shame on you Konrad, I’m labour as much as you are, so far Muscat didn’t give a job to my wife worth €2000 a week. Four years have passed listening to super one about the €500 raise to MP. Muscat said that Mrs Mizzi salary is justified because he is so sure that she will bring investment to Malta. Don’t you think that it was more justified for Gonzi to give that raise? The Mp worked so hard to keep Malta always ahead of other countries and you brag about how good Malta is in the USA
just a week ago. I’m sure it’s not through your merits. You fooled lots of people but it want happen again.

“… I’m labour as much as you are …”

What the hell are you complaining about then? You brought this on yourself.

    • Angus Black says:

Now, now, how can we know if Sai Mizzi Laing fails or not?

We don’t even know what she’s been asked to do.

Dear Students do you remember this debate? Now shame on whom? On Lawrence Gonzi or on Joseph Muscat for breaking his promise regarding the stipends, and for awarding a job to Minister’s Mizzi’s wife at 2000 euro per week?
    Shame on Whom?

It is in the public interest that a journalist asks Dr. Mizzi about the fact that his wife will be living in Shanghai as a result of the post she has been offered by the government of Malta, and how he plans to keep his married life while he continues to live in Malta.

This is not a personal private issue. This is a logical fair question that we are entitled to ask to a person who is serving in public life. Why should the Minister and the Ambassador give up their marital life to serve the country?

I am not aware of any other case or situation or of any other country where something like this is allowed to happen. Family life is a fundamental human right.

When governments and private companies offer posts abroad for the long term, they also offer the relocation of the immediate family. This goes without saying.

As an Ambassador to be based in Shanghai, Mrs. Mizzi Liang is entitled to have her immediate family relocated to Shanghai.

Dr. CONrad Mizzi has already been assigned a gargantuan task by Joseph MOUscat to deliver Labour’s key electoral promise of “inrahhsu il-kontijiet b’25% fi zmien sena mill-elezzjoni.” It is not fair to now deprive him of his family life, which is one of his fundamental rights, in order to complete that task.
