Why would a terrorist come to Malta on an overcrowded, sinking boat?

Our Minister of Homeland Security is coming over all Far Right heavy again, telling us that incoming immigrants must be kept in detention camps because some of them might be terrorists.

He wants “better intelligence on” asylum seekers who come in by boat, and on “the places they go to and the people they contact”.

What is he on about, exactly? Incoming asylum seekers, as he explained himself, are stuck in detention camps. They do not go to places and contact people.

Once they are out and about, going to places and contacting people, it’s because their papers have been processed and they have refugee status. There is absolutely no call, at that stage, for following them around and gathering intelligence on them. What, are we going to have a sort of Immigrant Stasi now?

I get the impression that Manuel Mallia is living out some kind of fetish fantasy involving spies, intelligence, police, soldiers, enemy cells and power to control. He lights up when surrounded by boots and uniforms. He’s so Far Right he’s almost Norman Lowell.

In any case, why would a terrorist come in by sinking boat, shot at by Libya’s shore patrol? For somebody with the money and connections of a terrorist, there are much easier ways – like coming in on a yacht, in comfort, or waiting a couple of months and then buying a passport for 650,000 euros.

But then why would a terrorist want to come to Malta at all, nowadays? This is no longer Gaddafi’s Malta, when his terrorists and agents were crawling all over the place, embedded in the island, living here, staying in hotels, using Maltese banks and Maltese accountants, and protected by the Labour government.

  1. mad says:

There is a far greater possibility that a terrorist has 650000 euro…and comes to Malta with a brand new Maltese passport.

  2. Osservatore says:

For ‘better intelligence’ he may want to have a word with Anglu Farrugia.

  3. Makjavel says:

Are we going to have a detention centre for the money-launderers, drug-traffickers, terrorists and assorted crooks and criminals lining up to buy Maltese passports?

  4. Manuel says:

And isn’t selling Maltese passports to foreigners from Azarbajan without any back ground checks, a risk? Can the Onorevole Dottore, enlighten us on this, please?

  5. Ipuffi says:

Correct . Your more likely to attract terrorists with a cash for passport policy than anything else. A Maltese passport allows you to travel easily through most borders.

By the way , it’s true Norman Lowell is a bit gay.

“This is no longer Gaddafi’s Malta, ”

Well at least back then we knew who’s Malta it was. Today we don’t really know who’s Malta it is, although we might find out pretty soon.

  7. bull's eye says:

Mallia is always thinking to keeping in the limelight. People might tend to forget his presence.

  8. Betty says:

Joseph Muscat was on Sky News this morning being interviewed regarding the ‘influx’ (according to him) of asylum seekers and he said, according to Sky News: ‘His island is being stretched to breaking point’.

  9. Oh Dear says:

I agree that he needs ‘better intelligence’ because unfortunately for our country his colleagues and him seem to be lacking far too much in the area of ‘intelligence’

  10. H.P. Baxxter says:

How about “better intelligence” on the two scoundrels who got a risible two-year suspended sentence for making ammo at home, to be sold in Libya? Who were they selling it to? Where? How? How much? Who is the end user?

Honestly, Manuel Mallia is a fat, lying, conniving, evil jerk.
