Friends with benefits – an update

Joe Cuschieri

The Labour Party/government is determined to redefine the meaning of the term friends with benefits.

The latest Labour Party insider to get benefits is Joseph Cuschieri (an unfortunate moniker given the other one), who is married to the foreign minister’s daughter, Clare.

He has been made chairman and CEO of the Lotteries and Gaming Authority.

We were told, before this happened, that the CEO position was going to be scrapped, because Cuschieri would be an executive chairman, rather than the usual non-executive chairman, so there was no need of a CEO as well.

Now The Malta Independent reports – based on a reply that Economy Minister Chris Cardona was obliged to give in parliament – that far from the CEO position being scrapped, Cuschieri has been given it as well, instead of simply being made EXECUTIVE chairman.

What is the point of being CEO and chairman rather than executive chairman? None, from the operations/organisation point of view. They came up with this cunnink plenn so that the foreign minister’s nephew could rope in both salaries and all the benefits:

1. the CEO’s salary of €68,500;

2. the non-executive chairman’s salary of €13,000;

3. car, fuel, telecommunications bills paid, health insurance & c & c

      Chairman to members of the Gaming Board:
      “I propose to increase the C.E.O’s salary from Euro 68. 500 to Euro 86,500 p.a. Any counter proposals?”

      Gaming Board members (cowered into silence and abject subservience): “None, Mr Chairman”

      Chairman to members of the Gaming Board:
      “Motion approved. Increase authorized” AMEN.

    Reuben Portanier – CEO, Malta Lotteries and Gaming Authority

    Reuben Portanier is one of the industry’s good guys. He works relentlessly hard, he treats employees, partners and licensees with respect, and is regarded as a proper gentleman. Malta has often found itself at the centre of controversy and Portanier has fought its corner while also listening to criticism and responding to it with actions. He has placed Malta at the centre of European debate, speaking up for firm and fair regulation at all times. He is an ambassador for his country and for the industry.

    The CEO of Malta’s Lotteries & Gaming Authority (LGA) Reuben Portanier has quit the regulator and will be replaced by telecoms regulator Joe Cuschieri.

    The respected regulator, a former Hot 50 winner, resigned just days ago and is expected to launch his own internet gaming consultancy. It is understood that chairman Mario Galea will also leave the LGA with Cuschieri taking over as executive chairman.

    Cuschieri was the operations chief for the Malta Communications Agency prior to taking over at the LGA. He has a wealth of experience in that arena as a former executive at Vodafone.

    Galea was also a former LGA CEO, who set up the LGA in 2004 and crafted the island’s first online gaming regulations. He has been working with the New Jersey regulator on the launch of online gaming in the US state. He only returned to the LGA as chairman in May this year following a five-absence.

    The reasons for the shake-up are unclear at this stage. Neither Cuschieri or Galea could be reached for comment at the time of publication.

    Well, under a PN government he played the Nationalist and sucked up like crazy. He was sly enough to make people believe that he’s clever when his IQ is well below average. When I informed some people who knew him that he was going to vote against EU membership they didn’t believe me.

    We’ll done to you George Vella and to your permanent secretary.

    Unlike diplomatic staff in your ministry who are being forced to leave the Service, or wasted at the Ministry in Malta, your son-in-law gets his reward.
