Lettera 43 on the options now left to Berlusconi to stay in politics: ‘Berlusconi can buy Maltese citizenship for Eur650,000 and become a European Parliament candidate in Malta. But he stands a bigger chance if he becomes a socialist.’

BERLUSCONI - MALTA 2

Lettera 43, the popular Italian site, has some scathing views on the prospects for Berlusconi to carry on in politics, this time as a member of the European Parliament. It lists the complicated options for him if he chooses to do this: by marrying a Frenchwoman, for instance, and trying to obtain French citizenship after two years.

The easiest way for him to do this, it says, is for Berlusconi to buy Maltese citizenship for Eur650,000 and contest the European Parliament elections on the socialist ticket in June.

But then it concludes that perhaps this isn’t such a good idea after all, and he’d be better off in Hammamet – a reference to how disgraced Italian premier Bettino Craxi spent his final years in exile in that Tunisian resort.

LA VALLETTA: FRONTIERE APERTE PER SOLDI.

    Concise and true.

I would not be at all surprised.
He still has his very old friend and Cavaliere della Republica Italiana in Joseph’s list of benefactors.
This old friend actually helped Silvio launch his media empire from Malta by transmitting from Malta.
Maybe he will join Joseph’s team of candidates after Silvio buys his citizenship .

His profile is perfect for joining the Malta Labour Party.

He is a Dalli and Mallia on a bigger scale.

In the 80s he was very close to the Italian Socialists.

    Corruption is his top speciality.

He is a lover of quality TV so I’m sure he’ll love to annexe Super One to his network.

Have you noted that the opening for high rise buildings would include Pembroke ‘for prestigious projects’.

I would be prepared to bet that the first will be the Australia hall project sold by the Labour party to a developer with a permit to build such a monstrosity, right in the middle of what is today a family friendly neighbourhood. Any takers?

Well, there had been a rumour he was viewing property last winter.

Is ex-minister Joe Grima so out in the cold that even Eddy Privitera is posting negative comments about his proposal ?

  12. P Shaw says:

Isn’t Berlusconi an-ex Socialist? Berlusconi was a huge supporter of Bettino Craxi and most of the members of Forza Italia are recycled PSI (partito socialista italiano) politicians.

Hence the link between Joe Grima of the 80s and Berlusconi/Craxi of the same period. They were all members of Socialist International.

    • Jozef says:

Nothing is ever clear-cut in Italy, but yes, Berlusconi was closest to Bettino Craxi’s PSI, which was primarily based in Milan, or as it was then called, la Milano da bere.

The latest debacle, losing a considerable number of senators and all appointed ministers follows the one led by Fini two years ago, Casini’s Christian Democrats before that and Bossi’s on-off agreements. One can say that his irriducibili hardcore are mostly the remains of the PSI who never forgave the ex-communists for Tangentopoli. People like Santanche’, nicknamed the Pythoness, are exceptions proving the rule.

It all started when Berlusconi bagged publishing giant Montedison clawing it from De Benedetti’s clutches, who then transformed his newspaper La Repubblica into a real and proper party, anti-Berlusconism an ideology.

Italy never recovered from Tangentopoli, its consistent decline resulting from two decades of destructive politics serving plain private interests. It’s what Grillo identified, giving him 20% of the vote at his first ever national test.

  14. David says:

If Berlusconi seeks refuge in Malta, he certainly wont be the first leader or former leader of another country to do so. Do you remember when Cypriot leader Archbishop Makarios escaped to Malta during the invasion of Cyprus by Turkey?

Berlusconi has already made colourful remarks in the European Parliament.
