For what it’s worth, Marlene Mizzi was on the Air Malta flight back from Istanbul yesterday. She was travelling alone in club class, wearing a ghastly white shell-suit. I can only speculate that her choice of attire was some sort of personal tribute to the late, great Sir James Savile.

UPDATE NOTE: I have already received a stream of comments, which I have deleted so that the discussion does not veer off at a tangent, from people pointing out in tones of outrage that there was nothing great about Jimmy Savile, that he was a rotten pervert & c & c. I will never cease to be astonished at how people in Malta read everything literally and no matter how perfect their English might appear, they just don’t ‘get’ things.

It’s screamingly obvious that the woman who wrote this knows exactly who Jimmy Savile was and that her use of those terms is ironic. The banging clue: ‘Sir James Savile’. And that is quite apart from the fact that, in idiomatic British English, ‘the late, great’, like ‘the late, lamented’, is invariably used mockingly.

I despair.

The whole tone of that comment was mocking and disparaging – that was exactly the point of comparing Marlene Mizzi to Jimmy Saville.

Using proper English in Malta is truly a major case of lost in translation. Hence all that hysteria from people who just don’t get things and say that I’ve ‘attacked’ them – you know, with a machete.

What a culture clash this is.
