You’re no longer mincing about before a jury, Mr Minister of Homeland Security, and the same tactics won’t work
By the most incredible coincidence, the minister of Homeland Security was asked a question in parliament by a backbencher on his side of the house. How cunnink was det, eh.
Labour MP Etienne Grech asked Manuel Mallia for the number of people who became Maltese citizens under the evil gOnzIpN, between 2004 and last year. The answer is 6,805.
A jury made up of non-evolved individuals circa 1990 might have been impressed at this false logic, but he’s in government now and has to deal with a rather wider audience.
The point, Mr Minister, is not the numbers but the COMMERCIAL TRANSACTION and the fact that these people’s names will not be published.
All those 6,805 got their Maltese citizenship without paying for it, because it is their right through birth or marriage or other means of naturalisation.
Many of those people don’t even live in Malta, they are the children and grandchildren of Maltese citizens, and live in North America, Britain and Australia. They have no intention of living in Malta – they claimed their Maltese passport as their birthright, part of their heritage, because they are proud of their heritage and it has gone towards the making of their personal identity and their sense of self.
In other words – the precise opposite of a raw, commercial transaction.
Oh, and all of their names were published in The Government Gazette, as was the law until you changed it so that you could sell passports to the “60 Chinese families” who helped put your party in power and your bottom on that seat.

Times of Malta is reporting that Arnold Cassola, AD, is calling for a `referendum to stop the sale of citizenship` – 35,000 signatures will force a referendum on this crucial issue.
Let`s use the democratic means available to us – Let`s gauge the feelings of the electorate.
A referendum will only give an excuse to Dr. Muscat to keep the country in election mode throughout the whole legislation.
The PN is not in a financial position to got into an election whilst the PL backers and financiers are still there ready to pump money. The referendum will just be an excuse for PL supporters to go and party every Friday and reinforce their beliefs in Dr. Muscat whilst the PL bolsters their support.
The referendum will definitely be won by the PL because most people who voted PL are still enjoying and celebrating the win 8 months back.
Daphne, you are the best….

This explains clearly the kind of profile migrants buying citizenship have and which type of countries usually sell citizenship.
If Malta is acting in the same manner as a ‘bankrupt country’, could we interpret this as a premonition of some sort?
Waste of time. Given the intellectual acumen of those who voted Labour it will be another walk-over. It will only serve to re-inforce Muscat’s big-headedness.
During the second half of Simon Busuttil’s brilliant speech I spotted Minister Mallia playing a game on his tablet, where one slides his finger sideways and up and down on the touch screen, so that the coloured blocks go down.
I prefer Spider Solitaire.
Better than the best she is the optimum and has the courage to call a spade a spade
What a woman of character and strong moral fibre.
Xiha and xiha ohra, I agree with you 100%.
The President should not sign off this piece of legislation.
The President is now, additionally, under the timely undue influence of the Cooperatives Board.
Bloody hypocrites and sick minded mercenaries They equate their Private Paese Bordello scam to the rightful returning of citizenship to our Maltese Canadians etc. brothers and sisters, cousins and friends who migrated and took on the citizenship of their country of residence.
That’s what Fenech Adami and Gonzi are remembered for in Australia and Canada and elsewhere.
An Opposition MP should ask for a breakdown showing the grounds on which Maltese citizenship was granted.
