Chris Cardona’s canvasser-turned-ministry-official: “Chris qieghed laqghat f’Bali”
The caption to this photo on the World Trade Organisation site is:
03.12.2013: At a ministerial meeting during the WTO’s Ninth Ministerial Conference, ministers greeted progress on ratification of the revised Agreement on Government Procurement.
There is no sign of Economy Minister Chris Cardona at in that group photograph. And yet, I received the following email yesterday.
This morning, while stopping for a coffee in Birkirkara, I overheard (very clearly) a conversation between two guys, one of who is known to be a Chris Cardona canvasser-turned-Ministry official.
The other was asking him to set up an appointment for him with Cardona. The canvasser-turned-ministry-official replied that right now the Minister “qieghed laqghat f’Bali”.
When I got to the office I did a quick Google search and saw that there is a WTO meeting in Bali this week.
I had a look through all the press releases issued by the Department of Information but couldn’t find one about this trip. I haven’t found any reference to Cardona being on government business in Bali – unless I missed it – and no formal statement by the Ministry.
But if he really is there, he’s in his lap-dancing element.

It’s such an important meeting (according to him) that he shouldn’t have missed a minute of it.

Ministers also discussed the EU’s strategy for the 9th World Trade Organisation Ministerial Conference which will be held in Indonesia on 3-6 December 2013. In this regard Minister Cardona stated that the WTO Bali meeting is important not only for the WTO but also for the EU, and that in this regard the Union should be at the forefront of these negotiations. Minister Cardona said that “an agreement can only be successful if the Bali package is balanced”. The Bali meeting is seen as critical for progress to be made on the Doha Round.”

Chris Cardona in Bali?
OMG. The sky’s the limit.
If Cardona is really in Bali and if he had bothered about that group photograph rather than being somewhere else then I would be Jesus Christ Jnr.
I am sure he will be back on the Rock by next Monday for Yanukovich’s visit.
I bet that now we are told why he was not in that picture.
Something on these lines :

And that is how i ended up at the Gentleman’s Club.
Ah let the poor guy tour the neighbouring Gentlemen’s Clubs in peace and quiet.
Let’s face it, he can contribute so much more in any one of these clubs than he can at a hundred WTO conferences.
Daphne, could the person who sent you the email have misheard?
It’s possible that what the canvasser said was not that the Minister “qiegħed l-laqgħat f’Bali” but “qiegħed f’għalqa qargħabagħli”. The Minister would feel more at home there.
Well let’s face it, Chris Cardona is only the puppet on a string for the other, bearded, background operator. What he says he does or does not do, knows or does not know, is hugely irrelevant and separate to the overall policy of the Malta Government.
Isn’t Malta’s ambassador to the World Trade Organization Alex Sceberras Trigona? Normally an ambassador accompanies his minister to such a conference.
