George Farrugia never had a business selling Daewoo cars, so how could the Labour Party have bought one off him?

Published: December 15, 2013 at 11:38pm

The Sunday Times reports:

The car pardoned oil trader George Farrugia claimed had been given to the Labour Party had been bought by One Productions through a barter agreement, the Labour Party said today.

The barter, apparently, was for advertising on Super One.

What a shame the newspaper didn’t bother picking at the obvious holes in this story.

So how did this work exactly? We are expected to believe that the Labour Party, sorely in need of a car, had a brainstorming session in which somebody said, “Let’s ring that man George Farrugia who doesn’t sell cars and ask him to sell us a car and we’ll pay him in adverting slots on Super One TV.”

Or another scenario: George Farrugia wants to buy advertising on Super One TV – but to advertise what? – and doesn’t have the liquidity to pay for it despite the millions he’d been siphoning off whatever. So he takes a spare car he has running around and says to the Labour Party, “Give me X amount of advertising slots on Super One TV and I’ll pay you with this car.”

Bunch of liars, all of them.

    There is something about Daewoos:

As Mr. Fenech (Joe Fenech) has already posted here, wasn’t there already something between John Dalli and Daewoo? For the life of me, I cannot remember what. However, I distinctly remember that there was some scandal somewhere. Does anybody remember?

To the best of my knowledge, legally this car needs to be on their books. Whether it was barter or not a transaction took place

Quick. You need to take a look at the agreement (and suggest you save it). It’s on the GWU website. It is amply clear that the agreement is not with the Labour Party but with an individual. Who is this individual?

Why was the agreement not done with the Labour Party?

Is the individual signing this agreement an employee of the Labour Party? If so, was this in lieu of payment of a salary? Were the related social security contributions/fringe benefits taxes paid?

Was this a scheme to avoid paying VAT? Was VAT actually paid by the Labour party on the advertising revenue upon the barter?

The agreement uploaded on the website is a “cash” agreement… why not a barter agreement? Why is there no mention of this “barter”?

[Daphne – That’s quite obviously another car. That contract is for a straight sale, which means the Labour Party is covered and has no need to lie about barter for adverts.]

    • P Sant says:

But the agreement is with an individual (check first sentence) not with the Labour Party/One Productions, as Labour is putting it.

It looks more like the Times wants to kill the story of the car donated to the MLP.

It is pity that they are not asking the MLP to see and touch the car.

  8. Gahan says:

So we have two cars in this story, one was donated and the other bought.

  9. Duke says:

If I not wrong, some time ago even John Dalli was involved something about Daewoo.Coincidence? Correct me if I’m wrong.

  10. bob-a-job says:

John Dalli was engaged as consultant with the Daewoo car sale agency from November 1996 to July 1998.

“Il-kumpanija JF Motors Ltd (sussidjarja ta’ John’s Group) kienet isservi ta’ aġent ta’ dawn il-karozzi bejn l-1998 u l-2003,” MLP

Did Dalli have a say when according to the MLP Daewoo changed hands in 1998?

The poor man seems to be a human lightning rod unremittingly struck by awkward situations.

  13. ciccio says:

In the PAC tonight, in reply to questions by Dr. Beppe Fenech Adami, Mr. George Farrugia confirmed that Dr. Manwel Mallia, who was the lawyer of George’s brothers in their dispute with George, knew about the commissions allegedly paid to officers of Enemalta already back in 2010. It turned out that Dr. Mallia, as lawyer of George’s brothers, had at that time or later been engaged in “arms twisting” with George in order to extract from him a settlement about the dispute with his brothers.

Dr. Owen Bonnici attempted to protect Dr. Mallia, claiming that lawyers are bound by professional secrecy towards their client, saying this was something lawyers learn as part of law fundamentals.

Dr. Bonnici did not seem to understand that Dr. Mallia was not the lawyer of George Farrugia.

Don’t lawyers learn, as one of the fundamentals, to distinguish who their client is in a dispute?

My memory doesn’t serve me right in my old age. Who were the agents for Daewoo in those days?

  15. Riya says:

At one time the agent for Daewoo in Malta was John Dalli’s brother Bastian if I recall well. I also remember that the Police had got a lot of Daewoo cars.

  16. Riya says:

George Farrugia is obliged to tell the whole truth and on this issue he is to be questioned seriously.

  17. Sherlock2013 says:

A close look at the blurred names seem to show Raymond Farrugia and Mrs Pauline Degabriele. Maybe an expert at deciphering blurred names can confirm.
