In Ukraine, the violence and protests escalate as the government moves away from Europe and towards Russia

Published: January 23, 2014 at 10:11pm

The mass protests erupted after Mr Yanukovych spurned a pact with the EU in favour of close ties with Russia, which offered him a 15 billion US dollar (£9 billion) bailout.

Since last November, when the first mass demonstrations were held, tension has escalated into wholesale violence, with at least two protestors found dead, presumed murdered. The body of one of them was found in a forest after he was kidnapped.

The European Union has threatened action and the US has already imposed sanctions on Ukrainian officials.

The Prime Minister should write a note to Mr. Yanukovich telling him that he is not welcome in Malta, and that his trip is not considered postponed but cancelled.

It is rumoured that the Ukrainian government has asked for George Vella to go to Kiev urgently. All expenses paid.

It is all but guaranteed that as soon as he arrives in the Ukrainian capital it will all be quiet. There will be no problem, no unrest and no riots.

It will be business as usual.

His eyebrows have now grown so bushy that he can see nothing.

That is exactly what the Ukrainian government needs at this most crucial and tragic moment of the country’s history.

Hurry up George, prove your mettle.

Some prefer austerity and freedom to rubles and submission.

This is what people do when they feel that the government no longer represents their interests.

This is what happens to governments when they ride roughshod over democracy.

U mbagħad jiġu l-moderni, liberali u progressivi Maltin ta’ Joseph Muscat jilgħabuha tal-bravi u tal-eroj jheddu li kapaċi ngħaddu mingħajr l-Ewropa għax lesti nintegraw ruħna ma’ ħaddieħor.

Mela bil-patrijottiżmu ta’ JM (li m’għandu x’jaqsam xejn) Malta mhix lesta tinżel għarkubtejha quddiem ħadd (i.e. l-Ewropa) imma lesta tintefa’ b’ruħha w ġisimha f’ħoġor potenzi kbar oħra bħar-Russja jew iċ-Ċina li għandhom warajhom storja twila ta’ ripressjoni u ksur tad-drittijiet umani.

Il-veru każ ta’ “FOOLS RUSH IN WHERE ANGELS FEAR TO TREAD.”
