Something doesn’t add up here

Why was it Tancred Tabone’s defence counsel who challenged the prosecuting officer’s request that Malta Today be made to reveal the source who gave them the story and documents that led to her client ending up in court?

You’d imagine that the defence counsel would be keen for the source to be revealed, so that he or she can be challenged.

But instead it’s the prosecuting officer who’s keen on forcing out the name of the source.

Something doesn’t add up.

The Malta Independent reports:

MaltaToday managing editor Saviour Balzan was summoned to testify in both sittings, and Insp. Ferris asked him to reveal the identity of his source just as he was about to conclude his testimony in the Mr Tabone case.

The inspector insisted that he needed the source’s identity to assist police investigations into the matter.

But Mr Tabone’s lawyer, Giannella de Marco, questioned whether the identity of the source was relevant to the case (…)

This could get interesting. It’s someone with a huge iced bun or the baker himself or one his sous-chefs.

    Very fishy indeed.

  3. Joseph says:

Is it true what Inspector Ferris said about revealing the identity of sources?

[Daphne – Journalists are protected too.]

Had the “source” been a PN sympathiser, do you think that Balzan would have hesitated to mention him or her? I seriously doubt it.

TMI reported “He insisted that he would not name the source, even if he was jailed for a month, stating that this was “the only sacred thing” left to him.” Yeah, sacred my foot.

The only thing that Balzan considers to be sacred is his and his newspaper’s protection of J Dalli BA and of supporting the PL even when this party is making a fool out of every Maltese citizen.

My money’s on Manuel Mallia, he must be the informant Saviour Balzan is trying to protect.

[Daphne – I believe Balzan had said that his source is not involved in politics.]

Another ‘fiasco’ in the making. No doubt one of the so-called ‘consultants ‘ is giving advice.
