The singular advantage McGill’s has is that only 0.5% of the Maltese population is able to pronounce it

Published: January 23, 2014 at 2:10am

“Gejt bl-Arriva?”

“Mort bl-Arriva.”

“Haqq %$£”***&!! l-Arriva.”

Try that with McGill’s. It’s not going to happen. Buses are going to become buses again, not ‘Arriva’.

I wager they’ll still be Arriva, just like a mobile phone is “Telecell”.

  2. Steve M says:

One of the Easedale brothers (owners of McGill’s) has a string of convictions for tax and VAT fraud – they have also long been covered in a cloud of suspicion regarding corruption and sharp practice – should be a shoe-in for this contract then.

[Daphne – There has been just the one conviction for VAT fraud: http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-news/ibrox-chiefs-roll-out-red-1460777 ]

I would say ‘Michael ‘ is odds on favourite. The gender is of course the problem.
    “Gejja l-Michael.”
    “Kemm se ddum il-Michael.”
    “Il-qahba Michael kif inhi mimlija.”

  4. ciccio says:

By the time they will be forced to leave Malta after being asked to sign off their assets to the Labour government without compensation, they would have grown up into McGrill’s.

  5. giraffa says:

McGill’s statement that they have contact with “very prominent individuals and companies” puts them in pole position in Malta, and the obvious people readily come to my mind. Didn’t take them long to figure out how contracts are awarded here.

  6. tinnat says:

Oh, but can’t you already hear “McDonild’s” (sic) ringing in your ears?

    • WhoamI? says:

      My thoughts exactly.

If the Maltese can say MuckDonalds, why would it be a problem for them to say Muckills? U ija mhux xorta ajma. l-aqwa li ftehmna.

  7. Erasmus says:

    Ħaqq għall-”Maggill”…

  8. CIS says:

That’s what brain washing does to people. I bet we will still be hearing of Arriva and associating it with bus service in Malta for a very long time.

This was one of the strategy, and still is I’m afraid, of Labour to get power.

Look now they have turned their attention to present Nationalist MEPs – they are being called traitors.

Who is the real traitor of Malta may I ask? Those who defend sale of citizenship are patriots and the opposition are traitors.

    What warped mentality is this?

  9. il-Ginger says:

    Gejt bil-Meggils

  10. Andy says:

The thing is, will this “Arriva MK2” be accepted by “the people” because the PL brought them in whereas Arriva was brought in by the PN which is not acceptable.

    • kram says:

I do not expect any bashing of the new provider, whether it is McGill or a local operator. With PL everything goes.
Se l-Orrizont’s reaction to the filming of the Chinese billionaire. When the same treatment was metted out by Super One it was ok.

  11. verita says:

Why does this government always attract fraudsters?

  12. Maltri says:

I wonder how our dear population will refer to them. Will it end up Mek Girrs? “Dhax il-gears ghadhom manual.”
Or maybe Mekkell? “Mhux barranin bhall dik il-Germaniza?”
Or perhaps Magilsk? “Filli xejn u filli jigu tnejn.”

  13. Last Post says:

Bis-servizz li kellna, l-Arriva kienet qed titlef il-miljuni kull xahar. Issa li l-istess servizz qed imexxih il-Gvern permezz ta’ Transport Malta min taħseb li qed jagħmel tajjeb għall-istess telf, ja baħnan Malti?

Il-PN itik biċċa ħobż f’idejk u tarmiha, waqt li timla’ rasek (mhux żaqqek) bil-wegħda li l-Lejber se jtik biċċa kejk tajba. M’għandekx esperjenza biżżejjed tal-(in)kompetenza tal-Labour fi gvernijiet passati?

Tista’ tkompli toħlom, inkella tiftaħ għajnejk u ma tħallix lil min ibellagħlek ir-ross bil-labra.

  14. Jozef says:

Does it mean bus drivers will wear a kilt?

    • H.P. Baxxter says:

They were almost driving about in a loincloth in the days before Arriva, with the slipstream cooling off their sweaty sack, so that should please them.

  15. Manuel says:

Let us wait and see for the reaction of Times of Malta towards the selection of Makkgill; it won’t be as negative as that towards Arriva, I am sure.

  16. H.P. Baxxter says:

As an armchair linguist (def. “an expert in tongue in the lounge” – dear me that sounds rude), I think it’s a tie between “Megill” and “Michael”. The latter opens up a fascinating field of research on gender assignment.

  17. C Falzon says:

    They will just be tal-Megill.
