Chinese applicants for Maltese passports: they’re not Maltese citizens yet and they’re already more equal than the rest of us

Chinese SAG

The news site Newsbook reports that some more Chinese applicants for Maltese passports have arrived in Malta this week. And they have been given police security. They are being escorted, during their stay here, by members of the Police Special Assignment Group (SAG).

You know, just in case some awkward journalists with un-Chinese ideas about democracy, freedom of information and the public’s right to know bother them with cameras and questions. A prerequisite for buying a European passport from the government of Malta should be a crash course in adhering to fundamental European values.

So great, we sell them a European passport and it’s we who are expected to embrace their totalitarian values.

Things have come to a pretty pass when mysterious Chinese buyers of a Malta passport have to be given protection from genuine Maltese citizens, and by whom?

By today’s version of a Malta Labour Party Special Mobile Unit instructed by communist North Korean trainers and notorious for gassing and opening SPAS fire on and grievously wounding Maltese citizens exercising their right to demonstrate against the Labour government.

Maltese people developed a deep-seated dislike for Libyans in general because of the way Gaddafi’s dictatorship was forced down our throats in the 1970s and early 1980s.

I have a feeling that history is going to repeat itself with every Chinese person that comes to Malta.

[Daphne – Yes, it is a shame for those Chinese who were here already and who have nothing to do with any of this.]

    • Calculator says:

The same could be said for the genuine Maltese in relation to the rest of the EU, now that we’re going to dump them with foreign oligarchs from the Middle East and China.

  3. Claude Sciberras says:

How does the government justify giving a special police escort to Chinese people who come to Malta to buy passports?

    • La Redoute says:

They don’t because a) they can’t and b) they don’t care what you think.

    • Ta'sapienza says:

Maybe Manwel’s next bash has a Cantonese theme and they’re just picking up some culinary tips.

    • Francis Saliba MD says:

The most obvious explanation (not justification) is that this Labour Party government knows full well that is forcing down the throat of genuine Maltese citizens a resented “passport for sale” scheme for which it clearly has no pretence of any democratic mandate from the Maltese electorate.

    • H.P. Baxxter says:

It DOESN’T NEED to justify it! Can’t you see this is EXACTLY the problem?

The Maltese don’t know their rights, they don’t know their freedoms, they don’t know their government’s obligations, they don’t live by a Magna Carta.

Their government is omniscient and omnipotent, to abuse them at will.

OUR DEAR PRIME MINISTER IS A PROFESSIONAL MACHAVILLIAN STRATAGIST AND EACH CITIZEN SHOULD BE PROUD OFF. THE PN AND OTHER PN BLOGGERS AND JOURNALISTS LIED TO THE MALTESE ALL THE WAY WHEN STATING THAT ONLY MALTA WAS OFFERING FREE CASH CITIZENSHIP WITHOUT RESIDENCE. CASA AND MASOLA DRAGGED MALTA INTO THE MUD ON A LIE. NO CYPRUS OR AUSTRIAN MEP TOOK HIS COUNTRY TO THE EU PARLAMENT ON THIS ACCOUNT THAT THEY HAD NO RESIDENCE REQUIREMENT. MALTA ALWAYS HAD ITS TRAITORS AND JAKBINI IN THE HOUR OF NEED AND THEY ALWAYS CAME FROM THE RIGHT.

      • H.P. Baxxter says:

Jesus sweet Jesus. We must be the only country in the entire galaxy where “Machiavellian” is a term of praise.

      • La Redoute says:

Only if you vote Muscat, though.

      • Natalie says:

I’m sure he doesn’t know who Machiavelli was. Most probably he heard the term somewhere and decided that a Machiavellian leader is a strong leader.

What rubbish. The poverty in thought and uncultured minds of most of my fellow citizens makes me weep.

      • Francis Saliba MD says:

        @ H P Baxxter.

Did you notice Alfred Aquilina’s Freudian slip spelling of “Machiavellian” as “MachaVILLIAN”?

      • H.P. Baxxter says:

It’s not Freudian. He’s just illiterate. And yet he posts comments online. That’s the tragedy of our age.

I feel for these Chinese bigshots. They were told that they were getting their passports in secret, without having to come here. Now they are forced to visit this shithole of a rock, least Joey can do is treat them like royalty.

I hear the ‘cop chefs’ are going to feed them also.

    • La Redoute says:

Maybe they already hold Maltese passports.

Wasn’t there a fairly long window period between the publication of the legal notice of Passport Sale Scheme Mk 1 and the subsequent amendment lifting the secrecy clause?

  6. Fernando says:

To add insult to injury they will be able to vote while myself, a Maltese citizen living abroad yet owning a house in Malta and spending over three months per year there was struck off the electoral register in the 1980s.

Pity this most transparent of governments did not inform us common Maltese mortals of the arrival of these VVIP ‘investors’. We would have gone to the airport to welcome them with garlands of flowers and begging bowls.

Attention, Baxxter. What can one conclude about a man whose shirt collar is a fist too loose?

Why are newspapers calling theses people ‘investituri’?

  12. Louis Amato-Gauci says:

MLP propaganda seems to suggest that other countries are chomping at the bit to introduce a clever, money-making scheme just like the IIP. Curiously, Canada, a country that has been one the world’s largest importers of human capital since WWII, is moving in the exact opposite direction.

Under a bill now pending before the House of Commons, would-be citizens of Canada will be required to: (i) reside in Canada for four years out of the preceding six-year period; (ii) be physically in the country for at least half the time in four of those years; and (iii) file Canadian income taxes while waiting to apply for citizenship. In addition, applicants between the ages of 14 and 64 must demonstrate proficiency in one of the two official languages, and pass a written test regarding Canadian history, civics and culture.

Contrast all the bellyaching regarding the need for a true link between Malta and its new would-be citizens, and the deliberate obfuscation and subterfuge regarding the true meaning of residency in the context of Malta’s IIP program, with the following statement by Canada’s Citizenship and Immigration Minister, Chris Alexander: “Requiring physical presence for this length of time in Canada better supports the integration of newcomers in Canadian society. It enables prospective citizens to develop a stronger connection to Canada. It encourages their sense of belonging here and fosters their full participation in Canadian life….”

It goes without saying that the proposed amendments now before the Canadian Parliament will not alter the final requirement for citizenship: an oath of allegiance, that includes a declaration of fealty to the Canadian monarch, and a promise to abide by Canada’s laws and uphold the duties of a Canadian citizen.

  13. Francis Saliba MD says:

They are “investituri” because they are investing in local property worth millions of euro that may need laundering and which can be sold later at big profit to the investors and their helpers – not the genuine Maltese residents.

    • La Redoute says:

They are not investing in property worth millions. Manwel Mallia’s mattress could comfortable cover a couple of applications that could translate into dozens of passports.
