Five-star stupidity: the award for the daftest comment of the week goes to Miriam Dalli

“I do not believe only in what Malta can get from the EU but I also look at Malta and the EU as equal partners.”

– Labour EP candidate, ex Super One journalist and full-time consultant to the Energy Minister, Miriam Dalli, quoted in The Malta Independent

How can Malta be an ‘equal partner’ with something of which it is an integral part? Malta is part of the European Union. It can’t be any sort of partner with the EU, equal or otherwise.

Ms Dalli read for a bachelor’s degree in ‘European Studies’. She said that she did so, while a journalist with the Labour Party’s television station when the Labour Party was actively campaigning against EU membership, so as to understand what the EU was all about.

It didn’t work. She still doesn’t understand. But that doesn’t matter because people as stupid as she is will vote for her anyway. And the place is full of them.

Ms Dalli’s daft statement is 100% indicative of the Labour mindset: the European Union is something external, sitting outside Malta’s gate like another coloniser in the making, and not something which includes Malta integrally.

One stupid scenario at a time, please.

  2. Neil says:

Exactly! The old Labour “us and them” policy when it comes to the EU cannot fail to show through.

It was an abysmal interview/article/attempt at propaganda. Although still marginally better than that prick Charlon’s dreadful efforts.

I’ve never voted in the MEP elections, but I’ll be there in May. Or rather we’ll be there.

    • Antoine Vella says:

The Labour ‘us and them’ mentality does not concern only the EU but can be seen everyday in Malta itself, in the distinction made between Labour and non-Labour Maltese.

I was going to comment that these people should think before they speak, however, they have to learn to think first.

I was worried that I wouldn’t get my ‘laugh of the day’, since the day is getting on. However, you saved me, Daphne.

  4. C Falzon says:

Ten years into Malta’s EU membership, and Ms Dalli is still thinking in terms of partnership.

The brain is only about 2% of a person’s body mass but it’s surprising the amount of stupidity it can pack.

  6. ciccio says:

Seems that after the forthcoming European Parliament elections, Alfred Sant and Miriam Dalli will be representing Labour in the EP, so the “equal partners” option will be high on their agenda. Under that scenario, instead of benefiting from “elf miljun Ewro” (I refer to 1 billion Euros of EU funds negotiated by Dr. Lawrence Gonzi for the term 2014-2020), Malta will seek to equalize what it receives with what it pays, and at best Malta will benefit from a “miljun Ewro fi flus kontanti.”

  7. edgar says:

With Miriam Dalli and Alfred Sant both shoo-ins for this election, the Malta Labour Party is going to have to take up its seats with the Eurosceptics and not the Socialists.Straight out of the Super One stables with their anti-Europe stand.

  8. Joe Fenech says:

On her FB she presents herself as a ‘politician’ rather then a candidate.

It is worrying that someone with such an extensive collection of degrees under her belt could be so challenged. It is demonstrative proof of the dysfunctional Maltese university and a society that has branched out in a very weird way .

  9. nutmeg says:

They will never get over that partnership myth, will they? It must be a Maltese peculiarity to elect to the EU parliament representatives who we feel deserve it rather than ones whom we deserve.

  10. Valletta_for_MEP says:

The sad reality is that this ex-‘journalist’ (read ‘show-girl’) will probably become an MEP without breaking a sweat. This despite the fact that she’s academically challenged, has no career to speak of, and is a leach on the public payroll. Not to mention that she’s just had a baby in midlife, so there’s not much chance of any midlife productivity spurt.

Meanwhile, candidates such as Helga Ellul, an acknowledged leader with a successful career, who’s furthermore just retired and is thus free to contribute fully, barely register on the voters’ radar.

Is she aiming to be Pocahontas or Lolita? Some people end up in the wrong careers.

  12. Bou says:

Since when does a politician dress as she has in this photo?

In order to be taken seriously, pretend or otherwise & even if you cannot think your way out of a wet paper bag, one should at least look the part.

This is not a superficial comment but indicative of how things are run here.

It seems it smacks of the Belusconi-esque era of COLPO GROSSO, a show that ran for many years, yes I swear it’s true, in Italia objectifying women in the most extreme sense.

Really? Come on girl….. show us that you do have SOME brains….. or just go away.

Her inevitable coursework during the MA European Studies on supremacy of Community Law must have been quite woeful.
