The EU (that means Malta, too…) and the US have imposed sanctions on Russian and Ukrainian officials

sanctions

In consequence of the referendum vote in Crimea, and Russia’s announcement that it will legislate to allow the integration of Crimea into Russian territory, the US and EU have imposed sanctions: travel bans and asset freezes against a number of Ukrainian and Russian officials.

There will be further sanctions if Russia escalates the situation.

So does that mean that Malta cannot accept money from citizens of Russia and Ukraine, those citizens interested in our citizenship scheme?

[Daphne – No. The sanctions have been imposed on certain officials only.]

Now can you imagine what would happen to Malta’s power stations in a couple of years’ time if the EU places sanctions on China or Azerbaijan?

With the same effect US and EU can impose sanctions on Santa Claus.

What about the Ukrainian pro-Yanukovych consultant of our Prime Minister? Any sanctions against him?

One condition in the contract for the new gas-fired power station stipulates that the unit price charged to Enemalta shall not exceed that for oil-fired electricity production.

One immediate effect of the Ukraine/Crimea crisis will be uncertainty and serious disruption in supply and distribution of natural gas, so forcing gas prices upwards.

That should put the viability of the contract for the new power station, and the effect on Malta’s economy in a very interesting light, particularly since the company has been practically given a monopoly in electricity generation and supply.

Interesting observation. But this scenario would take place only if Russia cuts gas supply, which is a bit far fetched at the moment.
The sanctions imposed by EU so far are just ridiculous and doesn’t harm Russia a single bit, why would Russia want to retaliate? The Russian response would be some ‘mirror’ sanctions, like denying Russian visas and assets (non-existing) freezes for some EU/US officials, and not cutting the gas for EU

    This is just as worrying.

I can’t help but feel that Muscat and Putin are of similar minds. Like Muscat, Putin doesn’t actually care, and is more than happy to use the institutions and processes of democracy to prop up the illusion that they are fair when all the while they are after something altogether undemocratic and dangerous.

    Sums these sanctions up…

Funny how no one here is bothered about the fact that the EU-US tandem is dealing with a post-coup, illegitimate government which they themselves installed after fomenting unrest through barefaced subversion. Nor is anyone bothered by neo-Nazi affiliations within the Western-backed coalition, or the ensuing Jewish pogroms, or the corrupt oligarchs appointed to govern the ethnic-Russian Eastern provinces, or the lies about a Russian invasion that never happened.

As for the aspirations of the vast majority of Crimeans who want their autonomous republic returned to Russia, it seems that only what McCain, Soros, Ashton & Co. say that matters.

George Vella’s comments to the 8PM TVM News Bulletin were hilarious. Did someone record them to upload them here?

He said that ‘it is not certain’ even after the ‘referendum’ that Crimea will be part of Russia.

Has anyone heard a word from the prime minister Joseph Muscat about the situation in Ukraine and Crimea?

Shouldn’t he be guiding Europe through this crisis?

    After all, Europe lacks leadership.

Muscat wants us to believe that China, which abstained in the UN Security Council’s condemnation of the Crimean referendum, has leadership. In 2013, China’s President had said that separatism was one of the “three evil forces” that undermine state sovereignty, territorial integrity, security and stability.

Bad news, very bad news, for Labour. This could have a market effect on the sale of passports and citizenship. it could also dent the one billion mark Joseph has projected on the big screens of his Utopia, if only he knew what that is.
