The finance minister’s official car knocks a woman down

Published: March 17, 2014 at 5:31pm

The finance minister’s official car has hit a woman as she tried to cross the road at Floriana. The finance minister was in the passenger seat and his chauffeur was driving.

There are no reports on the woman’s condition, but in one of those tragi-comic twists that seem to have been scripted by Harry Enfield, the Health Minister was driven past in his own official car and he jumped out to give the victim first aid. He is a medical doctor.

Let’s hope she gets to laugh about it eventually: mown down by the finance minister (well, his car) and given first aid by the health minister.

And you know what, imagine if it had been Tonio Fenech. The clever-Dick party would be waving bloodied bandages and dented fenders from their parliamentary seats. There would be YouTube videos, Facebook memes and endless reports by the intellectually-challenged Charlon Gouder on the party station. Malta would never hear the end of it.

So true. Character assassination is part of their game to deride the PN. They managed it well till last election. Now we are seeing through them. This morning there were two news items on MaltaToday. One was about the MFCC roof collapse and the other about Simon Busuttil’s interview following his visit to Inspire. Guess which item had Labour commenters beneath it? Simon Busuttil’s of course, to insult him. No one even commented on the other news to wish a speedy recovery to the worker in danger of dying. And he was putting up the lighting structure for Gensna. That is Labour for you.

    Only following orders …..

Was the driver subjected to the usual breathaliser test?
Or did Joseph offer another amnesty?

Charlon Gouder is appearing as a guest (with Norman Vella) just now on Net TV’s programme Dot Net.

His first words in reply to Norman’s expounding on the dangers of the LNG tanker smack in the middle of M’Xlokk harbour were that one should remember that at this point in time labour is all set to introduce the promised reductions in our electricity bills.

Is all the talk of such reductions a palliative to allay the fears about the disastrous effects on the whole of Malta and Gozo should a serious accident come to happen down there?

The poor people of Marsaxlokk and environs may soon find out that the savings on the ‘kontijiet tad-dawl u li-ilma’ will soon be gobbled up by higher insurance premiums on their property.

That is a weird ebay account. Selling loads of tat that nobody wants. Must cost more in fees than they make in sales.

Interesting thing is that on the reverse side, one if the main important numbers is the ‘price control’. A reflection of the times we lived in.

Why am I not surprised. About 2 weeks ago I put up a comment on the Prime Minister’s excessive speed and dangerous driving, winessed by yours truly. I also said that this sort of driving was an accident waiting to happen.

Lo and behold it happened. Whilst I wish this lady a speedy recovery, I also hope that any damages will be paid out by the Finance Minister personally and not by our taxes, given that government vehicles are not insured.

I also wonder if the police will investigate and press charges given who was involved in the accident

    And another one.

Shouldn’t Edward Scicluna find a driver “of calibre”?

    • M. Cassar says:

One wonders: if people do not need formal qualifications to be ‘of calibre’, do drivers need a driving licence to be allowed to drive?

Jew jirrombla u jghaddi minn fuqek. Joking apart, the good news is that the young woman is not in danger of dying.

You should have seen Charlon Gouder on DotNet this evening.

Labour mantra for this week, the PN wants the two koppli tal-Mosta.

Norman Vella and Louise Tedesco had to persuade him from investigating the smart meter tampering thingy all by himself this evening. There he was, swinging around in his chair, with Labour verve and that insufferable clumsy Italianism: stat ta’ fatt, irrevokabbli, kredenzjali…at times his back to the camera to face Norman Vella.

Bring on Cyrus, those chairs are on the small side.

Wonder if the driver was breathalyzed….

  10. ken il malti says:

Oddly enough the thought of the dangers of crossing this road came to my mind two days ago when reading the Portes des Bombes article in the Times of Malta, the gate being swathed in green light in honour St. Patrick’s day celebrations .

This is only part one. In part two the aloof academic will keep his job while the good doctor will be fired……when the reshuffle is announced.

And when I passed by at 1.57pm even Jose Herrera was there, trying to make himself useful…….

She was welcomed at A&E by John Dalli himself and helped to skip the six-hour long queue.

    Ha Ha.

  14. Kris Vella says:

The finance minister was in the passenger seat and his chauffeur was driving. – Not the case. It was only the driver who was in the car. happened to witnessw this incident live and thank god for Godfrey Farrugia.

[Daphne – I have to disabuse you of that notion. It was the Ministry of Finance itself which issued a statement saying that the Finance Minister was in the car and that he stayed on the scene until help arrived. The presence of the finance minister in the car is noted in all the reports on Times of Malta, The Malta Independent and Malta Today.]

  15. bob-a-job says:

And now the Ministry for Home and National Security will have to get involved as the police are called in. Eventually, if she sues the government it will complete the circle and revert back to the finance minister.

Meanwhile let’s all hope she’s not seriously hurt.

  16. P Shaw says:

Was the Finance Minister in a rush to ensure that Labour’s beloved ‘kaxxa ta’ Malta’ be safeguarded? The number of public appointments/jobs given to MLP stooges is running out of control.

  17. ciccio says:

The Times and other news sites are running an advert saying that “NOW I can get my money back. Refund of unjust fees charged on vehicle registration.”

There is also this email address:

    grantscheme.tm@transport.gov.mt

Why is “Your Government” calling this a refund of “fees” rather than a refund of VAT?

It is also unclear why the email suggests that it is a grant scheme. If it is a refund, it is not a grant. Are any EU funds being used in this scheme?

I expect a future PN government to open a scheme under which I will get my money back as a refund of the unjust salaries paid on Tana Lkoll appointments and an over-sized cabinet.
