Afghanis, Iranians and North Koreans, and those who live in and do business with those countries, are “currently” not allowed to apply to buy a Maltese passport

The government has published the parameters/regulations on the so-called individual investor programme, and they include:
Currently restricted from applying are those individuals that are nationals of the following countries, or are non-nationals but reside, do business, have significant ties in, or connections to the following countries;
Islamic Republic of Afghanistan
Islamic Republic of Iran
Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea)
Somebody must have sat on them hard.

And China perhaps?
Or how about Russia?
Bloody PN spoiling it again.
How dare the PN tell Jo who he can sell passports to.
More likely, he was advised to make this exemption as Malta’s participation in the US Visa Waiver Program is up for review this year.
The citizenship sale as it is already makes to prospect of staying in the program dicey. If citizens of those countries were allowed to “invest”, the exclusion would be all but certain.
One can read this list in a different way. Countries not included in the list are welcome. And, coming to think of it, which other country would object to citizens with close ties to these three countries being able to enter without a visa on the grounds that they carry a Maltese passport?
So they’re still in cahoots with the US embassy? Funny, innit? I thought we’d freed ourselves of that after the Great Purge engineered by Varist ‘n’ Jeff.
Of course! The delegation from the US State Department tasked with the review of the visa waiver programme left Malta three weeks ago.
Nothing surprising. Malta forges the St. Kitts and Nevis program, and these are the restrictions that exist in St. Kitts and Nevis for almost a year now. This is just market practice.

Has anyone bothered to check on the residency requirement of these applicants?
