Are we given to understand that Mrs Tanti knew her son was ‘dating’ his 15-year-old pupil?

Published: April 12, 2014 at 3:49am

Times of Malta reports on the police inspector’s examination of Lisa Marie Zahra’s email account:

Again, the inspector says, there was an email from Caroline Tanti regarding flight tickets. He was searching for anything that could shed light on where Lisa Maria was. He did not know how long he spent looking through the computer. He did not recall exactly how long the search took.

And earlier:

On a computer where was an e-mail from Caroline Tanti with flight tickets for the beginning of March.

And the previous day:

She said she knew Lisa Maria and had previously invited her to lunch.

Caroline Tanti is Erin Tanti’s mother. Are we being told here that she knew of her son’s relationship with his 15-year-old pupil, and that she communicated with her by email and sent flight tickets for all the world as though she was a regular, normal girlfriend in her 20s?

If so, then we might ask just how insanely irresponsible this woman is. She should have given her son the bollocking from hell before pointing him in the direction of the nearest psychiatrist, then informed the girl’s father so that he would deal with the matter as necessary.

According to last Thursday’s Malta Independent “He (Tanti) had told her (his mother) he was seeing a Lisa, but did not tell her that she was a minor. He also described her as being “trouble”.”

I doubt though how she could send her any e-tickets without actually knowing her age.

    • La Redoute says:

It is possible to book tickets on Easyjet by simply stating the traveller’s age.

    • Qeghdin Sew says:

Technically, it was possible that Mrs Tanti didn’t know Lisa Maria was a minor.

You only need the passenger’s date of birth when checking in (which can be done on the day of flying), not when you purchase the tickets.

[Daphne – She knew she was his pupil. That is enough. No decent and proper mother would countenance that, for her son’s sake as well as the girl’s.]

      • Dave II says:

That would be impossible, Qeghdin Sew – you don’t book tickets for an unknown person.

Technically? Who would be interested in booking flights for an unknown person?

She knew she was his pupil and she must have met her/at least heard about her, numerous times.

What begs the question is: why was she so involved? Or is it that she only cared about her son’s needs?

According to Malta today: “The Sunday before the incident, Zahra, Erin Tanti and his mother, and a friend of Erin Tanti, celebrated Erin Tanti’s birthday together.”

    • Alf says:

Slight correction: According to reports he told his mother he was dating an under-age pupil of his but told her she was 17 not 15. For God’s sake, does that make any difference?

  2. M. Cassar says:

Did the police not check who was likely to have access to the computer when the booking was made, which credit card was used etc, and whether the booking site requires a date of birth then?

Please do not assume that a mother would automatically do what is ethical or moral and this I say from a first hand account of a an incident involving a twelve year old who only escaped harm because of vigilant parents. That particular case the teacher was for an extracurricular activity taking on a single pupil.

    • La Redoute says:

No date of birth is required when booking on Easyjet.com. But that is neither here nor there. Tanti was a teacher. Zahra was his pupil. Her age was an aggravating factor. Mrs Tanti knew about the relationship. Erin Tanti hadn’t mentioned that. He’d said three people knew, but he hadn’t mentioned his own mother smong them.

  3. La Redoute says:

The tickets were reportedly for the beginning of March, squarely during a school term leading to final exams.

  4. curious says:

She did worse. By sending her tickets she was encouraging the relationship. And this when she was warned by her own son that Lisa was ‘trouble’.

I don’t think I would have acted in the same manner if my son told me that he was seeing a woman who was ‘trouble’, even if you leave out the age factor.

I would wish that this were not true but then there is the email. Are there any explanations which we do not know about yet?

  5. MYL says:

I still can’t fathom what tickets would anyone have sent to the poor girl.

I highly doubt the sender was actually the mother…probably Erin used his mother’s email account to send the ticket/s. But then again, what tickets? Why?

  6. anon says:

Hey Daphne, first of all I would like to congratulate you on your posts on Lisa’s case. You’re doing an excellent job! We might not have the same political views but who cares. I can now say I’m a regular on your blog.

I can confirm, sadly, that what Erin’s mom did is quite a normal thing. I’m from Birzebbugia and I see this quite often, 13-year-old girls jumping in lavish cars with 25-year-olds.

And no, they don’t take them to the swings or some youth club. You can only imagine what happens.

The sad part is that most of the girls’ parents know about this and do nothing. It’s fucked up (excuse my French).

  7. Dave II says:

“He did not kill her ” .

Concetta Decelis didn’t think of death when Rachel Bowdler was dying on her sofa after her son Jason had sex with her and drugged her.

Concetta Decelis thought only of her son’s life not about the girl’s struggles and did nothing to save her.

Do I sense a similarity here?

Mothers are protecting their children where they shouldn’t be protecting them.

They won’t report anything to the contrary as long as their boy is happy.

  8. ALI says:

Maybe he bought the tickets online, gave his mother’s email to confirm tickets. Then he entered his mother’s email and forward the confirmation of the flight to Lisa and the mother doesn’t know that he used or sent any emails from her account.

[Daphne – Why would a man of 23 use his mother (without her knowledge) as an alias for booking tickets?]

  9. Tarzan says:

Daphne, people (like yourself), who can size up a situation, and draw the correct conclusion from a few basic facts, are few.

The majority of people will make wrong assumptions and not the best of choices. Not because they are bad or irresponsible people, but because they can’t correctly sense the level of a dangerous situation until after it is too late.

I say this because it probably applies to both the families of the victim and the accused.

  10. ken il malti says:

I know as a parent you don’t like to hear this but a big part of the problem is discipline-less upbringing.

Raising children with the belief that they cannot do any wrong no matter what they do.

So far Malta has had to generations of youngsters reared this way and it shows.

  11. Joe Fenech says:

She’s no different to many other Maltese mothers who are as ignorant as f### !
