Roderick Galdes – using his car and driver as a state-paid chauffeur service for his bank employee wife

Published: April 8, 2014 at 1:39am

Comment sent in by Edward Borg on the subject of car-and-driver GM22:

The same car drops off Mrs Galdes at HSBC in Hal Qormi every day at 8am and picks her up again at 2pm.

A chauffeur service for the wife, paid for by the state.

One of the reasons why ministers get a chauffeur driven car is to avoid this sort of thing.

‘..The incident happened at around 9pm when Bonnici was driving his car towards Marsa. Bonnici was driving round the bend just outside the Santa Venera tunnels when he crashed into a car that was stationary in a dangerous spot.

Bonnici hit the stationary car which in turn hit the driver who was standing outside his car…’

What was his speed if he managed to move a stationary car, presumably with its handbrake engaged?

‘…Il-Ministeru ta’ Owen Bonnici qal li fil-post tal-inċident waslet il-Pulizija, li għamlet rapport bħalma jsir f’kull inċident ieħor. Dikjarazzjoni li tqanqal dubji għaliex baqgħet ma nħarget l-ebda stqarrija tal-Pulizija u min ħa din id-deċiżjoni. Il-każ ma ġiex rappurtat lanqas fuq il-paġna tal-Facebook tal-Korp tal-Pulizija. Dan hu t-tieni każ li fih, għal xi raġuni, il-Pulizija ħbiet dettalji dwar inċidenti serji tat-traffiku.

F’inċident ieħor, li seħħ il-Ħadd filgħaxija fi Triq il-Beżbiżija fil-Mosta, tifla ta’ tmien snin spiċċat fil-periklu li titlef ħajjitha. Madankollu, kemm fl-istqarrija mibghuta lill-media kif ukoll fuq il-post fil-Paġna tal-Korp fuq Facebook, il-Pulizija qalet biss li seħħet ħabta bejn vettura tat-tip Toyota Corolla u Ford Focus, misjuqa minn żagħżugħ ta’ 23 sena mis-Swieqi.

Iżda l-istqarrija ma qalitx li l-Ford Focus involuta fil-ħabta, u li ħalliet lit-tifla fil-periklu li titlef ħajjitha, hi vettura tal-Korp tal-Pulizija u s-sewwieq jidher li kien Pulizija tar-Rapid Intervention Unit…..’

Something similar happened in Gozo the weekend of the 31st March, another hit and run and the policeman involved heard gloating he won’t obey any instructions issued from Floriana. He was supposed to report to Floriana following the accident but is still in Gozo.

      Shades of SMU.

It doesn’t take much actually. 10 Mph is more than enough, 25 can easily push it over a centre strip, more so if a largish car hits a much smaller stationary one.

I hold no brief to defend Owen Bonnici but a car with its handbrake on can be moved by a couple of strong men.

Yes fine, doesn’t mean breaking the leg at the knees of anyone in the vicinity. Which he did.

    GM21 does it too.

And she lives nearly across the road in St Benedict Street to be exact.

Incidentally, now we know which road maps they were referring to during their election campaign. Newly recruited drivers had to have road maps that led to gyms, football pitches, banks, supermarkets and other exigencies of the service.

  6. M. Cassar says:

Perhaps we should call a spade a spade and admit that the car, chauffeur, fuel, maintanence etc are paid for by our taxes.
