Statement to the press read outside the Court of Justice by the victim’s cousin

This is the statement read out to the waiting press by Lisa Marie Zahra’s cousin Winston (their fathers are brothers) outside the Court of Justice yesterday.

———

On behalf of Uncle Tony and the Zahra family I would like to make the following statement.

For the past two weeks since the tragic death of Lisa Maria our family has been silent and very careful not to make any comment about the case.

We are more than aware that there has been a great deal of speculation and comment in some sections of the local media and at times it has compounded the pain of the family who knew Lisa Maria and the beautiful person that she was.

In spite of this, we understood and fully respected the fact that the police needed their time and space to conduct their investigations to the best of their ability and without any interference.

Today, the charges brought against Mr. Tanti, a teacher entrusted with the care of students, are clear and unequivocal. He has been charged with the voluntary homicide of Lisa Maria apart from a number of other charges.

I will not elaborate on the charges or any of the evidence as the place for this to happen is in the courts and the family will not comment in any way, either now, or while the process runs its course. Despite the enormous pain caused by the loss of Lisa Maria we will patiently wait for the justice system to work in the months ahead.

Lisa Maria was a beautiful 15-year-old girl. Like the vast majority of 15-year-olds she had her challenges, her good days and her bad. However Lisa Maria was a bright, intelligent and talented young girl. She was shy but confident. She always spoke her mind but did so respectfully.

Was she occasionally rebellious? Of course she was – just like most other 15-year-olds her age. Was she anxious about her exams? Of course she was – just like all other 15-year-olds currently sitting for their ‘O’ levels. Was she vulnerable? I think the fact that we are standing here today is clear evidence of that.

However Lisa Maria was looking forward to her future and the life ahead of her. She was excited about finishing her exams and enjoying the summer ahead.

She was busy planning what subjects to study in Sixth form and excited about her progress in the arts. She had everything to live for and we would like to remember her for all her wonderful traits.

On behalf of the family I would like to thank the police for the painstakingly detailed work that they have done over the past couple of weeks.

I would also like to thank all our friends and everyone who has in some way shown support to Uncle Tony and the rest of the family. The care has been overwhelming and greatly appreciated.

And you don’t for one minute think that the speculation which “compounded the pain” this poor family has been through many might have come from this very website?

Daphne accept responsibility for something? Heaven forbid! I used to think you were one of the good guys, even if I disagreed with you. Now I am not so sure.

[Daphne – ‘And you don’t for one minute think that the speculation which ‘compounded the pain’ came from this very website?’ No. I know for a fact that it didn’t.]

In spite of all that went on, said and written, the family is in deep sorrow and grief. In these circumstances I feel it a Christian duty to tender my solidarity with the family in these very dire moments.

One thing I can do to help them in a very small way is to offer my prayers to them all.

May they find peace and may the Lord graciously hear our prayer that they be consoled and comforted. May the soul of the faithful departed rest in eternal peace.
