Is this quite ethical?

vodka red bull ivan grixti

University lecturer Ivan Grixti, who is standing for election to the European Parliament on the Labour Party ticket, has had his people tour the campus where he teaches today, handing out flyers which offer his students and others a free vodka Red Bull at Tony’s Bar in Spinola (the one next to Saddles, not that it matters which bar it is) presumably at his expense because I don’t think that guy at Tony’s Bar is the sort to dish out free drinks in whatever quantity.

  1. H.P. Baxxter says:

    World-class university, eh, Juanito?

    • Manwel Camilleri says:

As if the Rector has control over the actions of each and every person on campus especially a non-resident part-time lecturer.

      • H.P. Baxxter says:

He does. I hope you’re not a lecturer yourself, because I shall have to explain this to you and I’ll come across as patronising.

In any organisation, the ultimate responsibility – whether it is control is neither here nor there, it is the responsibility that counts – lies with the boss. If this man’s actions bring the University of Malta into disrepute, then Juanito Camilleri should censure him. Or even fire him.

      • Manwel Camilleri says:

No Mr Baxxter I’m no lecturer myself but a quick search quickly reveals Mr Grixti’s employment status.

Problem with this piece of news that is damning for the University is the part that specifies ‘tour the campus’. Is there evidence of this? Case closed.

  2. Edward says:

Of course it’s not ethical. It’s not a good idea either. Now plenty of people looking for a free drink will get their hands on one, get their drink and vote PN anyway.

Plus, I guess it just goes to show what this man thinks of people: helpless alcoholics. It’s not like he s holding an event and supplying a complementary drink.

    • Ruth says:

My thoughts exactly. The clear message he’s sending out is “I don’t have time for you. Just take this voucher, grab your drink and vote for me.” Treating people just like lap dancers/prostitutes, buying them with a drink.

      How low can we go?

  3. Rumplestiltskin says:

This is shameful. If I was the Rector I would have this guy on the carpet. These people have absolutely no sense of ethics. Yet they aspire to represent us. This is unreal.

    • Tabatha White says:

      Is he tolerated? Imposed? Respected?

Let’s wait with bated breath for the Communications and PR Statement from University of Malta now.

  4. P Bonnici says:

    How cheap and patronising.

  5. observer says:

It may not be ethical, but any bar owner will gladly oblige if he is offered an opportunity to make a quick buck – no matter who pays it.

[Daphne – Why do you imagine that it’s the bar-owner’s ethics that are being questioned?]

  6. Painter says:

My girlfriend was given this during a lecture a couple of hours ago.

It is baffling because he thinks university students are going to vote for him because he gives them some free vodka Red Bull. The dinner dance was OK but this takes it to a whole new level, buying the youth vote with alcohol.

If people are not shown this they wouldn’t believe it because the whole thing is just plain ridiculous, so thanks for uploading, Daphne.

  7. Peter Mallia says:

It’s a good idea, actually. The only chance Ivan Grixti has to be elected is for everyone to go to vote completely wasted.

  8. Angus Black says:

    At Grixti’s expense?

I doubt it. Not if he is partaking from the same trough.

  9. peppi says:

Got one of these at Uni today..what a terribly cheap stunt..Tini l-vot u ntik vodka menn

And this from a supposed educator

  11. Wilson says:

The Nationalist government kept pushing for academic education. The rest was forgotten, and this is what you get.

Just happened to watch Giuseppe Schembri interviewed by Aleks Farrugia on TVM2. Rewriting history. Disgusting. Could not bear to watch.

Perhaps the Hon. Speaker may be interested to take this up.

  15. Bernard Vella says:

A scanner and a printer, after obtaining a copy of that ‘voucher’, will do the trick for a night out on vodka Red Bull.

    • Ruth says:

That’s just what we all ought to do! Voucher is valid till end of June, so we can even save them and use them for the celebrations after the MEP elections results.

  16. K says:

Back in 1978/9, Ivan used to secret Labour party flyers in our school bags. I guess old habits die hard.

  17. The Mole says:

And of all drinks on earth, he had to choose a dangerous one, or, at least, a potentially dangerous.

  18. caroline says:

Doesn’t this go against all education codes – a lecturer giving or offering his students alcoholic drinks?

  19. Pacikk says:

Well isn’t it just great – a university lecturer, who society looks up to by entrusting him with the future generation knowledge, promoting a well-known ‘get-high-quick’ alcohol consumption.

The firsts are all being written under the PL government – the only problem is, what kind of firsts?
