Make no mistake about it, there’s going to be a large iced bun for Cyrus Engerer

Do you honestly believe that Cyrus Engerer pulled out of the electoral race of his own free will? He would have been talked out of it, and offered something much bigger in return, which is Muscat’s technique for avoiding the creation of a small army of bitter savages who will attack him along the way.

Anglu Farrugia is better off as Speaker of the House than he was as deputy leader of the Labour Party and than he would have been as deputy prime minister or minister of justice (and let’s face it, we’re probably better off too).

The dangerously vicious Franco Debono is Law Commissioner and not expected to deliver.

The wickedly unstable Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando is allowed to do as he please as chairman of the Malta Council of Science and Technology, even to the point of recruiting his own mistress.

John Dalli has been lionised and given a near-free reign as consultant to the prime minister.

Jesmond Mugliett has been given a job, presumably because he can’t hack it with his architectural practice.

Jason Micallef has appointed himself chairman of Valletta 2018 while still chairman of Super One TV.

The prime minister throws money, positions and privilege at those he most fears and those in a position to bring him down.

Cyrus Engerer will have been ‘persuaded’ to pull out of the race with the promise of something better. And after this morning’s press conference with Martin Schulz it suddenly came to me that it is Schulz and not Muscat who didn’t want Engerer to stay on as a candidate. Schulz would not have wanted to deal with a member of the European Parliament, in the Socialist Group, who is serving a suspended prison sentence of two years.

It will surely happen after the MEP elections.

  2. Thinking out loud says:

Someone should ask Schulz what his views are about the PM condoning and minimising Cyrus Engerer’s conviction by the courts?

    • Antoine Vella says:

Someone should also have asked Schulz what he thought of Muscat’s pushbacks of immigrants.

  3. P Shaw says:

Exactly my thoughts. The promise of the EP seat together with the rejection by the PN might have lured Cyrus into the skip. I bet it will be an EU related position too.

Wasn’t Karmenu Vella found guilty of a criminal act too in Mellieha Bay?

This photo is crying out for a caption competition.

PM to Cyrus: “Is that a pen-drive in your pocket, or are you just pleased to see me?”

Why are Labour in the socialist group?

They don’t have any socialist policies.

  6. bob-a-job says:

It is highly probably that Schulz was handed the information by one or more of the surviving candidates.

One in particular comes to mind because that’s how the brothers usually work – ask Lino Spiteri.

In charge of the President’s pansies?

  8. Freedom5 says:

He is probably already checking out accommodation in Brussels

  9. P Bonnici says:

I bet you John Dalli is pleased with this, it deflects attention from his case.

    Bingo!

A very astute observation and very likely what actually happened.

I’d offer him the post of ambassador in one of these countries.

Mauritania, Nigeria, Sudan, Somalia, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Iraq or Iran.

That way he can get stoned without having to resort to marijuana like his father.

  18. Gaetano Pace says:

Was Mr Schulz aware that the Malta Prime Minister has condoned and pardoned over 1000 thieves who stole electricity ? Was Schulz told who were these 1000 which incidentally tally with the 1000 of Garibaldi who were honest men fighting for their country not robbing it. How will ever Mr Schulz tackle this and similar situations if God Forbid he ever makes it to the European Parliament Presidency ?

    • H.P. Baxxter says:

Not to belabour the point, but do you think Martin Schulz cares about all this? Of course not.

He’s a socialist, and a Socialist of the Continental type, i.e. ideological.

He sees politics in terms of Left and Right, and genuinely believes the Left to hold the monopoly over the moral high ground.

He has a historical duty to win this for the Left, at any cost. Even at the cost of twisting facts, of lying outright, or of conniving with proto-Fascist negro-killers.
