Why are you surprised? 51,000 voted for Alfred Sant. For me this is even more stupid and cannot understand how there are so many dull witted people amongst us.

    • alan says:

      exactly!

      • Catsrbest says:

And most of the PN executive team continue to maintain that the Maltese are intelligent people.

It’s better if they wake up, ‘smell the coffee’ and stop dreaming. If they stop believing such a fantasy they can at least start to address and work around the situation much better.

      • Dissident says:

I think both parties know that the Maltese aren’t intelligent, the PL knows how to leverage it effectively and mischieviously, while the PN misses out the retards because it respects the intelligent portion

  3. Stephanie says:

At least Charles Mangion got one right. We have different DNA.

  4. anthony says:

I would not have been at all surprised if he had polled 70,000.

He promised that he would rid the country of all immigrants.

Jo managed a landslide by promising a few euros rebate on utility bills.

By my reckoning there are 250,000 imbeciles in this country.

And that is a conservative estimate.

  5. Aunt Hetty says:

25% of Italians voted for Beppe Grillo a stand -up comedian by profession, and a thousand Maltese voted for Tal-Ajkla whilst 50,000 voted for Alfred ‘Partnership Rebah’ Sant.

Ah, and a bearded drag-queen won the Eurovision Song Contest whilst a few years ago the Catholic Church said that Limbo ceased to exist.

The end of the world is nigh.

    • Catsrbest says:

And who said that most of the Italians, especially those of the south, are any better than the Maltese.

      • Aunt Hetty says:

What about the Brits, French, Greeks, Hungarian and the impeccably tolerant and super-civilized northerners like the Danes who opted for the far-right parties?

      • A. Charles says:

In Italy, that statement about the South is considered racist and an outcry in the media would be the result.

  6. kev says:

I consider people like Salvu Balzan to be a nastier and more dangerous breed. He says Lowell and his ilk should not be allowed to contest elections.

In line with Balzan’s à la carte democracy it is not hard to argue that he himself should be banned from editing a national newspaper. Any argument goes once you’ve crossed the line. His bias, his ignorance, his vindictiveness, his anti-human Green beliefs, and yes, his face. Why not?

[Daphne – My goodness, Kevin, we have common ground here. And apart from the gist of your argument, I had no idea you see Saviour Balzan as I do. There might be more that you don’t know: his random attacks on Alex Tranter, for instance. Ostensibly, they’re about Enemalta. In reality, they’re about the fact that 30 years ago, when glamorous Alex with his floppy straight black hair drove down to the beach in his cool Landrover and all the girls flocked, Saviour the Boiled Red Lobster who couldn’t get a date fumed and spluttered in the shade. Literally. ]

    • kev says:

It’s post election time, Daphne, and I’ve collapsed to the political level I despise so much. I don’t hate the man. In fact I don’t hate anyone.

But ‘common ground’ is problematic. Perhaps it’s best not to ruin the act and keep to those incomprehensible parables which I dish out to my amusement.

  7. P Shaw says:

His votes were inherited approximately 50/50 by the PN and MLP.

    • William Grech says:

Let’s not be shoddy in our statements please. It was more like 65.2% to PL and 34.8% to PN.

      The Independent reported:

“Votes from Imperium Europa candidate Norman Lowell have been counted and transferred, with the majority heading towards PL candidates.

PL candidates received 1,929 votes while PN candidates received 1,031 votes.”

      • P Shaw says:

My mistake – I quickly and roughly analyzed the transfer of his 7335 votes, taking into account that there was a surge in non-transferrable votes. Deducting the non-transferred votes, I approximately calculated the amount of votes transferred to the MLP candidates at the 18th count, assuming that the rest of the votes were inherited by PN candidates.

        I wrongly ignored AD completely.

  8. Belti Nazzjonalist Agostinjan says:

    Vera bniedem tan-nejk.

  9. tal misthija says:

Tajjeb forsi xi hadd jaf jghidilna wara Norman Lowell fejn komplew jivvotaw? Ghax jista jkun messagg.

    • William Grech says:

What message? My fear is that at times we read too much into things. We see patterns where there are none simply because our brain is wired in a way to be on the lookout for patterns.

How would you explain AD apparently inheriting 963 votes from Norman Lowell. On what planet does that happen, exactly?

  10. Connor Attard says:

I don’t mean to sympathise with Norman Lowell in any way whatsoever. Yes, something needs to be done about immigration, but as a Catholic I simply cannot endorse an extremist position such as his.

On the other hand, The EU has been dragging its feet on the whole issue, and unnecessarily prolonging the introduction of more effective and long-term measures. More and more people are starting to feel that there’s simply no other alternative, and that is precisely why Lowell has managed to garner a record number of votes, as I see it.

The PN and the PL – in spite of all its empty threats about pushbacks – have done very little in the way of addressing this ongoing issue.

    • M. Cassar says:

So you conclude that the only way is to resort to illegal and inhuman measures?

      • Aunt Hetty says:

More realistic solidarity in the form of voluntary burden sharing will be more effective in driving far- right political parties into oblivion then lambasting those 7,000. At the end of the day , those 7,000 have second and third preferences that should not be sneezed at either.

    • Another John says:

      Connor Attard: well said

      M. Cassar: ‘illegal’ is a term coined by men

Aunt Hetty: ‘burden sharing’ is our mantra. The French, British, Dutch, Danes, Germans, practically everybody else, wants none of it. Besides, if there is immigration by unsustainable numbers, why should it continue to be spread and multiply?

  11. ken il malti says:

I still get a laugh at his wooden bridge idea for a Valletta Gate entrance.

  12. Worried says:

I feel worried as the society choose and 7000 in not a small number to vote for this person whose only credential is that he foster the hatred to the immigrant being legal or illegal.

This situation is making pressure on those Maltese born or adopted people who has nothing to do these migrants but their only difference from other Maltese people is the colour of their skin.

They have to face comments such as go back to Africa or even some parents don’t allow their children to play with them because they are afraid that these children could have some kind of a disease. The only sick people are Lowell and those who voted for him.

  13. silvio farrugia says:

Ah yes, 25 per cent of the French are ignorant, stupid etc. Also in the UK because of the big win of the UKIP they are racists etc, but in Malta nobody gets a message and while the whole of Europe is increasingly supporting anti EU and anti immigrants parties, here in Malta if we do the same we are labeled ignorant, racists etc.

[Daphne – It’s the same in France and Britain, Silvio. Nobody is admired for voting for Farage or Le Pen, unless it is by others who have done the same.]

David Cameroon said that we have to see why people are fed up with Europe…so they said in Denmark and in other countries.

They respected their electorate not called them illiterate and ignorant. This only happens in ‘democratic’ Malta.

[Daphne – David Cameron is the prime minister, not a journalist or a member of the public. A prime minister does not insult the electorate or criticise its choices.]

  14. Joe Fenech says:

His histrionics are just a marketing ploy.

Despite simplistic and odd solutions to very serious issues, Lowell seems to have been the only Maltese person to bring up matters such as aesthetics, culture, identity, immigration..in the media. Why did the local philosophers, artists, intellectuals, journalists… fail to debate them?

Within the Maltese context (Malta is hardly Rostock or some London suburb 25 years ago), Lowell is simply L-Alternattiva but with a masculine edge and therefore his power is marginal. The dangerous – and I mean ‘really dangerous’ figure in Malta is that little Maltese Kim Jong Un : Joseph Muscat.

  16. drood says:

Is Norman Lowell still under “suspended sentence’ for defamation ?

  17. I have never agreed with this person and regret that he garners the support that he gets, but I equally disagree with those who see this phenomenon as evidence of a particularly Maltese deficiency.

People like him have garnered equal, if not higher, support in other EU countries in these elections.

Unfortunately, human nature is of a fairly common standard throughout the world. It’s good, bad or indifferent qualities being highlighted at different times, in different places and to different degrees by local pressing considerations.

  18. sarah says:

I am really curious to know why so many people would carelessly vote for this man? And I am especially more curious to know why a so called intelligent person would do so?

  19. Edgar says:

What Norman Lowell Have Been Constantly Predicting Is Actually Becoming A Reality . In A Rapid Way Mind You . Why The PN And MLP Never Came Up With The Idea Of Burding Sharing With Africa Instead Of With The EU . Food For Tought I Think .

  20. Simon says:

Like him or not all he said about infectious disease is perfectly true. Why should we not have the right to speak out on something so vital as our health. I fail to understand how when I boatload of immigrants arrive one sees the police and armed forces with face masks and then a few days later these same immigrants are allowed to mingle with others without any tests being carried out.

The official statistics of the various diseases in sub saharian Africa should be enough to warrant strict testing of all Immigrants from this area as a high risk jurisidiction. this is is not about Racism it is about our health.

[Daphne – A sizeable percentage of the Maltese population is infected with STDs, Simon. I suggest you avoid sleeping with all Maltese just in case. And the most dangerous infectious disease you can pick up has for the last many years (predating African immigrants) been MRSA in hospitals, the cause of death of many people.]
