Birzebbuga/Hal Ghaxaq fisherman Darren Degabriele, who is in his early 30s, was blown up by a car bomb while driving on the Zejtun Road to Marsaxlokk earlier this afternoon. He is in danger of dying.

His passenger, a woman of 28, is also in hospital. She was not as badly affected – it was the driver who suffered the full brunt of the explosion and has 90% burns.

Degabriele owns the Gente di Mare restaurant in Marsaxlokk, and has fishing vessels registered in his name.

How terrible! For such a small place and such piety, Malta really is full of terrible criminals.

    • something wicked says:

What piety? Malta’s about as godless as they come.

      • P Shaw says:

Is anyone surprised? We have criminals heading NGOs/associations and representing entire sectors of the economy.

    • Catsrbest says:

Terrible indeed. But as for piety – Jesus compared it to whitewashed graves – hypocrisy – and in Malta it is at its worst. In fact, I believe that Jesus only used harsh names for hypocrites. He really disliked them.

    • H.P. Baxxter says:

Not just criminals, but organised criminals. That’s worse.

      • La Redoute says:

Disorganised criminals organising crime. That’s even worse.

      • Francis Saliba M.D. says:

Organized criminals regularly carrying out their own private settling of accounts with murderous results is worst of all. It suggests that the loss of confidence in law enforcement is very widespread indeed throughout ALL sectors of Maltese society.

I hope these two injured persons pull through and do not lose their lives.

Could this be all part of a drug turf war?

  3. Lalala says:

Wish them a speedy recovery. Such a shame that a young man has to go through this.

  4. Maradona says:

90% burns = dead meat. RIP. The Malta of the 21st century.

  5. tinu says:

The air that we’re breathing is contagious as low moral values and abusive behaviour are being blessed by those who should know better.

    Regolamento dei conti.

    How awful.

If it is really 90%, the poor guy is doomed.

Unless of course he manages to get to Chelmsford or East Grinstead by tomorrow morning.

In that case he will have a 50/50 chance.

  7. Jack says:

Don’t worry, Manwel Mallia and Peter Paul Zammit are in charge.

Malta is fast becoming a playground for organized crime.

Could the Italian Mafia have anything to do with this? They have long been interested in consolidating a position in Malta.

    • Joe Fenech says:

      ” long been interested”

Are you serious or simply naive?

    • Dinosaur says:

Perhaps Mafia money is being laundered through the purchase of restaurants in Malta.

    • ken il malti says:

Johnny ‘Snus Dalli has not been heard from lately, hmmm ?

    • Francis Saliba M.D. says:

What do you expect in a country where a recently convicted person is publicly hugged and lauded by the Honourable Prime Minister himself in connection with that very recent conviction.

Is there no sense of shame left?

  8. Alexander Ball says:

Makes you wonder how it was triggered.

If on a timer, it could have taken out passers-by.

    A scary thought.

  9. P Shaw says:

    Serhan il-mohh!

Ministru Manuel Mallia jiddefendi l-Maltin mill-kriminali li ghamluh milljunarju u li jhossuhom ‘at home’ mieghu.
