Racism is innately irrational

Charles Sammut, one of Norman Lowell’s keenest supporters and sometime Imperium Europa treasurer (he’s not a redneck – he lives in a big house across the valley from where I do) has posted this on a Facebook page called L-EWWEL MALTA L-MALTIN, which says it is in favour of push-backs and deportation.

Follow the logic, will you?

Six American teenagers have been indicted on gang rape in Texas, therefore Malta must push back asylum seekers from sub-Saharan Africa.

The logical connection?

The six American teenagers have dark skin and some have the legacy of African features because anything between 500 and 150 years ago a few of their ancestors were sequestered from their home in Africa and taken to north, south or central America or the Caribbean islands.

Therefore all African men or men of African descent are rapists or potential rapists.

Which is a bit like saying that all Maltese are pimps and drug-runners because for many years, those were the only sorts of Maltese who gained a foreign reputation. Or a bit like saying that if you’re Maltese, you’re bound to succumb and become a pimp or drug-runner because it’s in your genes and you can’t help it, even 400 years after your ancestors left Malta.

Completely irrational – it’s not even worth arguing with these people. But they have the vote.

If, as you say, Mr Sammut is an educated man, then he is a nasty piece of work because he knows that this post is irrational and he is just fanning the hysteria of the ignorant which, as is blatantly obvious, make up the vast majority of this country of ours.

[Daphne – I did not say he is an educated man. I said he is not a redneck. He operates a business and appears to be comfortably off. If you were to meet him socially, you would never know him to be the Charles Sammut who trades in this racist muck. He hangs around with sort of normal people outside Imperium Europa.]

The hatred and racist incitement is escalating and goes on unchecked and unhindered and it’s reached a point where I just despair. There is no healthy discussion on the media, and no education to speak of.

People I considered friends are posting pictures of women clad in burkas and asking whether we want to see our wives and daughters dressed that way. Irrational? Yes. And it’s compounded by the the fact that they can’t tell the difference between a burka and a veil.

[Daphne – No, it’s compounded by the fact that they’re not aware their own statements and attitude are misogynistic and embedded in the default position that women are inferior. OUR WIVES AND DAUGHTERS – their chattels, their possessions, their things in their control. Exactly why would a Maltese woman obey orders to wear a burka, and from whom would those orders come, in the event? The men, of course. THE HUSBANDS AND SONS. But of course, women have to obey orders because they’re women.]

We are told that Africans are taking over our jobs, culture and religion. Well, the number of times I have seen black men working hard and efficiently in the midday son, whilst their Maltese partners sit in the shade u jiffangaw fuq xi hobza can’t be counted and I give you my word that I will take a picture next time I see it. And how are immigrants and refugees taking over our culture?

And how many Maltese do we know who have converted to Islam so far?

I have it on good authority that the shocking comments on timesofmalta.com are a mere FRACTION of the hate messages and threats of violence that the paper receives on daily basis.

And, as you say, they have a vote!

Just in passing, has anybody seen any of our male African guests who is obese?

Couldn’t agree more, Daphne. That post is just utter hatred for all black people because of some bad thing some guys who happen to be dark-skinned did. These racists wouldn’t be happy if someone said all Maltese are murderous monsters since it was Maltese people who detonated bombs and killed other people in the 80s.

They would say ‘Imma dawk għax estremisti, mhux il-Maltin kollha hekk.” It cuts both ways.

Anyway, these are the kind of people who cannot be reasoned with for the simple reason that they cannot think straight, which is what lead to their racism in the first place.

I’m full square behind you on this one, believe me. My point was specific in that there was a meme doing the rounds that asked the question. No doubt posted by a man.

If I told my wife what she had to wear, I’d have to wear the burka myself for a couple of weeks until the swelling went down.

[Daphne – I think most sensible people would say they would rather have African immigrants as neighbours than any of that lot.]

  6. Joe Fenech says:

Gang rape is characteristic of backwards, misogynistic societies or ethnic groups. Since a certain part of these people play the religion and racism card, mainstream politicians chose to remain silent which is giving the far right considerable leeway.

[Daphne – Gang rape is characteristic of nothing. Drunken yahoos from highly privileged backgrounds are perfectly capable of gang rape. Two men stabbed the mothers of their children 50 times, in front of those children, in Malta in the last few years. One was a white-collar worker from a conservative, middle-class background; the other was the cocaine-addicted black sheep son of a petrol hawker.]

    • bob-a-job says:

‘the other was the cocaine-addicted black sheep son of a petrol hawker’

While on the topic. The term ‘black sheep’ is NOT racist.

It stems from the genetic effect in sheep whereby a recessive gene occasionally manifests in the birth of a sheep with black rather than white coloring. These sheep naturally stand out in the flock.

The idiom serves to describe an odd or disreputable member of a family.

    • Joe Fenech says:

I said ‘gang rape’ not just any crime.

  7. Ruth says:

Adolf Hitler was white and Austrian, yet he was one of the worst human beings known to history.

  8. David says:

If racism is irrational why does it exist in many countries and seems to be be most prevalent in the most advanced and educated countries as in many European countries?

[Daphne – I don’t know why I bother, David. The fact that something exists in many countries does not mean it is NOT irrational. On the contrary, the more likely it is to be irrational because irrationality, and not rationality, is the natural human condition. Rationality is the product of a combination of education, knowledge, learning and intelligence. Irrationality is NOT most prevalent in the most advanced and educated countries – it is LEAST prevalent there. It is MOST prevalent where there are great masses of uneducated people: take your pick. Would Hugo Chavez have been so popular in Venezuela if the great mass of the population were not illiterate peasants? Are nuclear physicists irrational?]

  9. Min Jaf says:

And a couple of years back, 3 or 4 men, all from Nadur, gang-raped a 15-year-old girl, also from Nadur.

A priest, also hailing from Nadur, intervened – shamefully, not to protect the girl, but to exert pressure on her parents not to report the crime to the police, and also mediated in an attempt to buy their silence.

So, Charles Sammut, where does that leave the people of Nadur, of Gozo, and the Gozo Curia? Should they all be barred from taking the ferry to Malta?
