How to italicise parts of your comment

Published: July 4, 2014 at 5:21pm

Some of you might want to italicise parts of your comment or certain words for emphasis, or use italics for parts of a newspaper article you are quoting, instead of putting that between quotation marks.

Here’s how to do it.

I am going to break up the symbols because if I don’t, they will form a workable command and you won’t see them. So, first put a < then em and then a >.

After that, write the bit you want italicised. Then put a < then a / then em and then a >.

The symbols will not show up when your comment is uploaded, because this is the ‘command’ for italics.

Meanwhile, the more observant among you will have noticed that today this website finally got its Facebook ‘share’ and Tweet buttons. Please use them wherever you think a post should receive wider attention. Thank you.

I must also remind you of some of the rules for commenting:

1. no multiple interrogation (question) marks because one serves the purpose, don’t you think?????????

2. no exclamation marks at all, single or multiple, unless you think it absolutely necessary after an obvious exclamation like Ouch!

3. no ellipses….because this one….I think….should be punishable…. by shooting at dawn….

4. capital letters at the beginning of sentences and proper punctuation

5. correct spelling and no ‘textese’ abbreviations

6. no reference to public figures by their initials unless they are KMB

This website’s comments-board is a draw in and of itself, thanks to your input and to long hours spent at the moderating coal-face, a task I approach more like editing rather than simply pressing the upload button, which would be quicker and easier.

So let’s keep it that way. Please write your comments with as much care as though they were appearing under your real name, in the full knowledge that they are not going to be read by the sort of semi-literate idiots who congregate elsewhere.

Comments-boards are like a fashionable bar. The minute the trash gets in, and the standard falls, everyone else leaves. That’s the mistake other websites have made. I work hard to avoid making it here.

    Apparently not.

What about the initials Dr. BS ?

Sorry but I couldn’t help it.

Very decent and common sense rules. I agree totally.

Lol – love the ! myself, to be quite honest.

[Daphne – LOL/lol: there’s a ban on that, too, incidentally.]

  6. pacikk says:

Suggestion – these ‘guidelines’ should be noted on the right hand side of the blog.

Speaking for myself, it’s never too late to learn.

Daphne, maybe you will not believe me when I say that I cannot find the Facebook ‘share’ and tweet buttons. Before, I used to see a F-recommend button. Is it something with my settings?

[Daphne – No, I don’t believe you, ciccio. There’s a set at the top of the post and another at the bottom.]

Le, vera. I do not have the buttons. Maybe an IT expert can lend me a hand on this site – it’s probably something with my settings.

I thought something was wrong when I realised that I did not fall in the “more observant” category.

Daphne, believe him because I also could not find the buttons up to two days ago.

[Daphne – They were not there two days ago. They went up yesterday.]

It would be great if the site supported the

    tag for, er, block quotes.

  9. Qeghdin Sew says:

I’m wondering if the <blockquote> tag works too. It would be the preferred format for, er, block quotes.
