Italy has somehow managed to rescue Meriam Yahia Ibrahim Ishag, the woman persecuted and condemned to death in Sudan for marrying a Christian man and renouncing Islam.

In reality she was never Muslim at all – her father was, but she was raised alone by her Christian mother. Hardly the point, though.

She was flown out of Khartoum by Italy’s deputy foreign minister, Lapo Pistelli, who had taken a keen personal interest in the case.

The people who were going to murder the lady are savages – irrespective of their colour or creed.

Well done to the Italian gentleman.

  2. A. Charles says:

    Good news at last.

  3. Wonderland says:

An extremly positive and extraordinary story. A great sense of duty by this Italian politician that gives a breath of fresh air, hope and trust in politics. Also, it is a reliev to see the support of the Italian Prime Minister and his endorsement to this brave act by one of his Ministers.

Such an act and attitude of Mr Lapo Pistelli should demonstrate a role model to others in politics. Well done Mr Pistelli. In my opinion, you made Italy so proud and showed the true meaning of Christianity from words to action.

You should be awarded the best politician of the year.

    • La Redoute says:

Commendable action, yes, but let’s not go over the top in praising Pistelli and Renzi.

Asylum-seekers who make their own way to Italy are often at the receiving end of brutal treatment.

  4. Nana says:

Well done, we need more people like this true gentleman.

  5. Renzi leads, Muscat and the EU should follow.

    • Jozef says:

This was also a media stunt, albeit managed perfectly.

Renzi had nominated his foreign minister to replace Ashton, who, it must be said, didn’t exactly contribute to the development of a common EU foreign policy.

Apriti cielo, the eastern bloc pretty much against, they consider Mogherini another ‘western inner circle’ product who won’t give due importance to their Putin concerns.

      Lapo Pistelli for EU commissioner.

  6. Persil says:

Happy that she is safe now. Human life is precious and everyone should be free. Many others suffer the same fate. Did you read about the news in Iraq about genital mutilation ordered on all women and girls? Some four million women/girls will be affected.

    This is barbaric.

What a man! A great person. Stories like these bring to mind that there are still people who value humanity.

  9. Sophia. says:

BRAVO TO THE ITALIAN FOREIGN MINISTER. YOU’VE SET AN EXAMPLE TO ALL AUTHORITIES IN EUROPE. THANK YOU.

  10. Min Jaf says:

And then people here still consider closing our borders against irregular migrants as a justifiable course of action.

By posting comments on the internet, such individuals cannot claim ignorance of the abuse and persecution to which irregular migrants are continually exposed.

Two thousand years down the line, Christianity remains largely absent in Catholic Malta. It is limited to demonstrations of idolatry centred on the vara tal-parocca.

  11. Marlowe says:

Italy is also single-handedly behind Operation Mare Nostrum. I suspect the spat between the AFM and the Guardia costiera last October had something to do with it.

  12. christian says:

how come you’re defending Christians? It is always your pleasure to denigrate anything relating to Christianity especially if it is Catholic. Moreover you never wrote anything about the persecution of Christians around the world but now this case is important just to taunt the government here by doing odious comparisons.

[Daphne – What a stupid thing to say. Only somebody really narrow-minded and unimaginative would see this in religious terms as “defending Christians” rather than sticking up for human rights and the persecuted. Do you honestly think that Italy rescued her – and her family – because she is a Christian? How wrong you are.]

    • Natalie Mallett says:

Human rights go beyond religion, Christian. Why did you get so hot-headed with this article? Daphne is all the time standing up and writing posts on human rights issues which this government is ignoring and trampling upon all the time.

Cool down, Chistian, and start thinking with your head instead of your emotions and you will see how right Daphne is in all her posts.

    • Jozef says:

christian, Daphne does not denigrate Christianity.

So the Spanish Inquisition’s strain of Catholicism with its morbid taste in portraying the Christ in various stages of torture and execution gives her the heebie-jeebies.

Especially if the mannerism is that of combining the proportions of a three-year-old toddler, a beard and bambi eyes in full polychromy; Gesu’ bambino, infante, just to short-circuit the brain’s memory of symbols and provoke utter confused terror in every mother.

  13. Emanuel Sammut says:

There was a worldwide petition on ‘change.org’ which helped Meriam’s release. Petitioned Government of Sudan – by Emily Clarke – Malmesbury, United Kingdom.
I and many other Maltese signed this petition.

  14. Optimist says:

This made the “news” in that racist Facebook page. The great Charles posted it there with his usual anecdotal story.

  15. Marie says:

Women every day still suffer unnecessarily and die in during pregnancy or childbirth. Women are being denied basic human rights. Whist the feminist movement has touched and changed Europe and America, there is still another world far larger than Europe and America where women are treated as mere possessions. It is so sad when one stops and things about this.
