I have just received the following comment:

NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS POST BUT BREAKING NEWS

As we speak Judge Wenzu Mintoff is in Hal Ghaxaq attending a concert by Gaia and Frederica, wearing Bermuda shorts and a summery top and sitting in the front row.

Which reminds me: the other day Joe Zammit Maempel gave me a more detailed description of how (Judge) Wenzu tried to kick him when on the witness stand and still under oath.

(Judge) Wenzu was the defendant in the case: a libel suit for which he was sued as editor of the Labour Party’s newspaper, KullHadd.

Dr Zammit Maempel, acting for the plaintiff, asked him one question then another, which (Judge) Wenzu answered. When he asked the third question, instead of answering (Judge) Wenzu screwed up his face, held on to the witness stand with both hands for better balance, and high-kicked his cross-examiner.

Dr Zammit Maempel grabbed his foot and the two stood there for some seconds in suspended animation, (Judge) Wenzu with his leg raised and Joe Zammit Maempel holding onto his foot.

(Judge) Wenzu’s defence lawyer, Toni Abela, tried to excuse or justify his client’s actions, and was immediately sent out of the courtroom for his pains, by the presiding magistrate, Lino Farrugia Sacco (it just gets better, doesn’t it).

(Judge) Wenzu wasn’t fined for contempt of court. Well, of course he wasn’t.

Is it possible for (Judge) Wenzu to actually high kick? I am sure it would have been the picture of the decade somebody would have managed to take a shot. Any contempt of court fine would have been worth such memory.

[Daphne – There were no smart phones at the time, and yes, it would have been possible to lash out like that because he was younger and not so fat.]

Do you know, that’s exactly what I think every time I see him. He is his split image. Are they related?

I remember vaguely that Lorry Sant had tabled or threatened to table some photos but cannot remember the context or the story at the time.
