Johnny Dalli

Attard ODZ project

For heaven’s sake, did nobody bother to read the list of names of those involved?

There they are, right there: Mr John Dalli and Mrs Josephine Dalli. I hasten to add that this is not the more famous Labour man, but the less famous Labour man, the Mintoffian MP Johnny Dalli whose brother is married to the Civil Rights Minister Helena Dalli.

This particular Johnny Dalli is not so famous now, but he was very famous  when his contemporary Karmenu ‘EU Commissioner Guy’ Vella was a Labour minister the first time round.

They had a lot of fun on a boat called the Lady Jo in the early 1980s, which was named after the Mrs Josephine Dalli whose name is on that list of Attard ODZ developers along with her husband’s.

The name Francis Gauci rang a bell which I had to think about for a few minutes until it clicked that he’s probably the very same Frans Gauci tas-Save On (that supermarket which collapsed in the early 1990s, killing customers), who has a sizable parcel of land up the road from where I live, which is how the name was instantly familiar.

See the plans here:

IMPORTANT UPDATE:

Francis Lanfranco has clarified the facts about the inclusion of his name in that list. He is not part of any development project but is the administrator for 100+ co-owners of that individual segment of land for which his name appears on the application.

This particular segment of land gives access to the road and the proposed developers of the project requested its inclusion so that they would have that access. On behalf of the many co-owners, Dr Lanfranco agreed. The land which he represents on behalf of those co-owners is the remaining undivided estate of his great-great grandmother who died 79 years ago and whose heirs and descendants now number 100+.

Most of the land that made up that part of the estate, Dr Lanfranco explained, was expropriated (12.7 tumoli) by the colonial government during World War II. Of  the remaining 4.5 tumoli, four tumoli were  included in the development boundaries by a (Nationalist) government. Their particular section of the land is therefore within the development zone even though the rest is not.

Actually, no not James Barbara. He comes from a very Nationalist family and, at least until a couple of years ago, was Nationalist himself. I don’t know if he still is but would be surprised if he isn’t.

It is unclear, in fact, whether the police have the necessary legal power to move this person along. Was this person breaking any law? If not, on what grounds has he been asked to leave?

    • Allo Allo says:

I don’t know exactly what the law states on such a matter, but I’m sure that the police can ask him to leave because that is what happens in other civilised countries like Russia and China.
