These are the two loggerhead turtles which were rescued when injured last summer, and treated in the San Lucjan turtle rehab programme. One had been tangled up in fishing nets and the other had eaten metal objects.
The turtle rehab programme began in 2001 and has since treated 170 injured turtles found off Malta, 108 of which survived to be released back into the sea.

Nice new design for your blog. But please could you bring back the “Newer” and “Older” buttons to allow navigation from one post to another without going to the main page? Thanks.
Something positive at last.
Beautiful creatures. thank you to those who do what they can to save them from the negligent acts of others.
Good luck to them. They should paddle fast from the island. I’m sure somewhere in some Chinese recipe book, there is a delicacy soup involving turtles.
They were a delicacy in Gozo at least until the 1970s. In fact, the first time I saw a live (and rather large) turtle was when it was being beheaded – presumably for soup – in Marsalforn in the early 1970s.
A tad macabre but thanks for sharing just the same.
It was Mintoff’s favourite dish and I know this straight from the horse’s mouth.
Und wo ist Herr Flick?
Can’t understand why politicians have to “participate” – or expect to be invited – in such ‘releases’
Before we had Pullicino, and now Leo.
Is it some kind of strategy to ensure these turtles are so scared stiff, that they will not come anywhere near Malta again?
We should release Leo and keep the turtles.
I was half expecting to see the the Minister of Defence inspecting an amphibious assault drill.
I wish they had put them back to sea a bit further out.
Where they could escape recapture: left to die slowly on their backs for a week, and then served as a stew with orange and chocolate as a local speciality.
I love the photos, especially the ‘Katusu’ sand drawing.
What’s this, Daphne? This post is so unlike the things you post that I can only assume that it is a joke or at the very least you posted it tongue in cheek.
[Daphne – I happen to like turtles.]
Well done, Daphne, for giving this story its due importance. We need to take care of nature more, so it will love us back. Oh by the way, saw a car sticker lately which I liked – ‘the more people I meet, the more I love my dog’.
Lovely photos!
